The start to the 2021 school year has been like no other! Despite the challenges, everyone in our school community adapted quickly and we have now had a great first week back at school. This is due, in no small part, to the planning and preparation completed by both staff and families, and to everyone’s patience, understanding and support. Thank you! Despite the week of lockdown, many events and activities commenced this week. Morning Running Club, instrumental music lessons and Edudance have all begun, and preparations for the Faction Swimming Carnival are underway. Next week, our first assembly for the year will be held and Mrs Tran will also be holding rehearsals for the Junior and Senior Choirs. School Board Nominations On behalf of the school community, I would like to sincerely thank Mrs Kasia Deery and Mrs Jessica Nailer for their time, valuable contributions and support of our school throughout their three year tenures on the School Board which finished at the end of last year. Consequently, there are now two Parent Representative vacancies on our School Board. The School Board is an important decision making group of our school comprising of staff, parent and community representatives. The Board is involved in activities such as reviewing policies, monitoring our school budget and analysing our student performance data. The Board meets once or twice each term on a Monday evening. If you would like to nominate for these positions, Nomination Forms are available by contacting the front office. Nominations close at 2.00 pm on Monday 22 February. If more than two nominations are received, I will conduct an election. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you wish to discuss this opportunity. Science As you may know, we successfully applied to have an existing room converted to a Science Lab in 2018. After much anticipation, the lab was completed early last year. I am very excited to announce that all of our Year 1 to 6 students will be participating in Science lessons in the lab this year. Chaplaincy Chappy Renee is on leave for the remainder of the year, however we have already commenced the process to appoint a new Chaplain for this year. Our YouthCARE chaplaincy service is an important part of our school’s pastoral care strategy. Chaplains are trained and are available to listen, understand and provide support to young people facing personal or social challenges. Although our school strongly supports chaplaincy, we understand that you, the parent/carer, may have objections to your child/ren interacting with or accessing the services of our Chaplain. If you do object, please visit the office to complete an Opt-Out Form. If you do not complete an Opt-Out form, we will assume that you give permission for your child/ren to access the Chaplaincy services if needed. Connect Our school’s main communication tool is Connect, and it is vital that all families are receiving our Connect notices. If you or anyone you know is having trouble with Connect please let us know so we can provide assistance. When we commenced using Connect, we set up one parent/carer with access to Connect. If you would like both parents/carers to have access, just let us know and we will happily arrange this for you. School Parking Safety around schools remains a high priority for the City of Canning and they work hard to improve child safety in a number of different ways. The Ranger and Community Safety Team have resumed rotational parking patrols at all schools within the Canning District, including ours. In an effort to educate drivers, cautions were issued throughout this week. However, infringement notices may now be issued to drivers of vehicles found to be in breach of the City’s Parking Local Laws, which can be found on the City’s website. Please read the safety around schools brochure included later in this newsletter.
