Makerspace Materials:

We are still in need of materials for our developing Makerspace in the Library Learning Commons. Donations to

support the important learning that takes place in a Makerspace would be greatly appreciated. The maker

movement in school libraries is about encouraging students, teachers, and parents to think creatively and with an

innovative mind-set. People are encouraged to look for DIY solutions to their problems and create a space that

allows for both collaboration and co-operation. We hope you will support our Makerspace.

Playground Challenge:

Students in K-8 have been involved in a Playground Challenge during their Library Learning

Commons time. Students are learning how to use the Design Process in order to create an

improved Playground in the areas of physical space, games & activities, and behavioral

guidelines. Students have started to move into the brainstorming phase after having looked at

the problems and needs areas. Soon, students will be developing solutions and creating

model/prototypes in collaborative grade-level groups in the Library Learning Commons. They

will then present these to the RES Playground Committee, as well as to the staff at RES, after

which student recommendations will be chosen for implementation. We are excited to see the

final outcome of this design challenge!

Halloween Party

A Halloween party will take place on October 31st in the RES gym starting at 1:00 p.m. Students

will be able to change into their costumes after eating lunch, and should be ready to go after

the lunch bell at 12:35 p.m. We will have a parade and a pumpkin-carving contest within our

House groupings in the gym. Other fun games and challenges between Houses will also take

place.

Parent Advisory Council:

Hooray! Rossburn Elementary has a new Parent Advisory Council! Chair - Tanya Chuchmuch;

Vice-Chair - Kathleen Dyck; Secretary/Treasurer - Patsy Chuhai. Other members also include

Steve McKim, Nancy Woychyshyn, Marilyn Lawless, Alicia Grassinger, Kelly Hunter, Gretchen

Layh-Antoniw (taking picture), and Mary-Ann Mitchell-Pellett (Principal). It is exciting to have

such a dynamic and forward-looking group supporting quality education for our students! Our

next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 13th in the RES Library Learning

Commons.

WE Leadership Team at RES:

We have started the WE Leadership Team at RES, which is composed of students

from grades 1-8. The We Team will divide into sub-groups as required to tackle

different leadership jobs in the school such as: clean up, recycling, fundraising,

tabloid day, presentations, school dances, and projects to support the

environment and the great community. Our We Team is composed of the

following members: Allison Kreshewski (Grade 1); Grady Mackedenski, Aaliyah

Langlois (Grade 2); Natalie Bartkiw, Jackson Antoniw (Grade 3); Emma Rudolph,

Tatum Chuhai, Laney Dunits (Grade 4); Pressley Jerome (Grade 5); Jessica

Halliday, Gavin Chuhai, (Grade 6); Makena Lawless, Abby Rudachyk, Shauna Teige,

Angelina Kostecki, (Grade 7); Carly-Jo Carson (Grade 8).

The WE Leadership Team is also planning to attend the Provincial WE DAY kick

off in Winnipeg on October 25th. We are looking for volunteer drivers to make

the day trip with our students. Please contact Ms. Mitchell-Pellett as soon as

possible if you are available.

HEALTHY LUNCH EXPECTATIONS AT RES:

It is important that students bring a healthy lunch and snacks to school.

Junk food does nothing to nourish students’ bodies or brains required for

effective learning. Please refer to the following link that described the effect

of junk food on students’ developing brains:

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/11/junk-food-could-disrupt-

childrens-brain-development

At RES, we also support the Manitoba School Nutrition Guidelines, which

are located here:

https://www.gov.mb.ca/healthyschools/foodinschools/documents/handbook

.pdf. Please familiarize yourself with guidelines and plan your child’s

lunches accordingly.

LUNCH HOUR EXPECTATIONS

Students staying for lunch are expected to behave in an appropriate manner and are

solely responsible for their action(s) to the noon hour supervisor and/or teacher in

charge. These are our lunchroom expectations:

Students will eat their lunch in a socially acceptable manner, seated in their designated

eating area.

Students’ talking must be conversational.

Yelling across the room is unacceptable. Students are responsible for cleaning up their

eating area.

Lunchroom supervisors/teachers will check the students’ tables prior to dismissing the

students.

Students deposit any food waste, use the washroom/locker, and then proceed directly

outside.

During inclement weather, students are expected to be involved in quiet activities.

Students staying for lunch at school may not leave the school property without

WRITTEN PARENTAL PERMISSION FOR EACH OCCASION. These notes must be

given directly to the office. As well, students who are going uptown for lunch need to

leave at lunchtime – NOT during recess after lunch.

Junk food such as soda pop, chocolate bars, candies, energy drinks, or chips are not

allowed. These types of foods have no nutritional value, and affect students’ ability to

focus and have the brainpower needed to do well in school. Parents please support your

children in bringing healthy lunches and snacks to RES.

Staying at school during lunch hour is a privilege, not a right. Students will be provided an

opportunity to work at improving lunchroom behaviours if there are problems. However, if a

student continues to misbehave on a regular basis, the students may be suspended from

staying for lunch for a determined period of time.

Remembrance Day Ceremony:

A Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held at the RES gym on November 10th starting at 10:30

a.m.

Kindergarten News – October

R. Lukinski

The kindergarten folks have settled nicely into class routines. In

the morning they get down to business with their chalkboards,

learning correct letter formations, sight words and how to listen for

the beginning and ending sounds in words. This is the beginning

of spelling skills.

We have been participating in the Global Read-Aloud studying

works by the author Mem Fox. This program hooks up classrooms

around the world with computer technology. We were fortunate

to have a video call with a grade one class in Brooklyn, Ohio.

In math, we continue to work with patterns, set recognition and

counting skills. The children need to learn how to count to 100

and help at home would be appreciated.

Grade 1/2 News

October has been a busy month in the Grade 1/2 room!

In Math, students have been working on repeating and increasing patterns, as well as working

with numbers to 100.

In ELA, students have been working on reading and writing in using the Daily 5 program and are

getting used to the format of it.

The students are excited to begin our home reading program called Books and Beads! For every

10 books, a student reads they will get a bead to put on their shoestring. By the end of the year,

they will have a colorful necklace of beads to take home!

In Social Studies, students have worked on the unit Our Local Community by learning about

various aspects of what makes Rossburn a special place to live.

In Science, students are learning about the Properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases through many

delicious experiments using cake batter and root beer floats!

We had a beautiful day participating in the Terry Fox Run!

We are looking forward to Halloween and are excited to participate in the school wide

Halloween parade in the gym to see all the wonderful costumes!

37th Annual Terry Fox Run

We held our annual RES Terry Fox Run in support of the Marathon of Hope on Tuesday,

September 26th. Brenda Kreuger, a cancer survivor from Winnipeg, was a guest speaker

at our school that day. She spoke to us about her journey and how Terry gave her

inspiration.

Thank-you to all students and staff who participated in making our Terry Fox Run a

success. We had a beautiful afternoon to be outside to run and walk! We raised $ 372.25.

All the money that was raised from the hot-dog, juice, T-shirt raffle sales and donations

has been given to the Terry Fox Foundation. Congratulations to Mrs. Nash. She was the

lucky winner of the Terry Fox

T-shirt!
