Socials Engagements Editorial Deadlines Friday 12 Noon Calendar Items Social Items News Items Monday 12 Noon : Letters to the Editor Jessica Shavonne Ross, daugh- ter of Jerry and Deborah Good- man Ross and granddaughter of James Leland Goodman, all of Raeford, received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Pathophysiology at the Medi- cal University of South Carolina in Charleston. She is currently working as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Ross’ doctoral research was “Fatty Acid Regulation of Sphin- gosine Kinase 1 and Sphingosine- 1-Phosphate in Inflammation and Obesity.” Her degree was conferred during a May ceremony, attended by her fourth grade teacher from South Hoke Elementary School, Betty Brum and her husband. Also attending the ceremony and many events honoring her were her parents, grandfather, siblings, aunts and cousins. Ross graduated in 2006 from Fayetteville State University where she traveled extensively to scientific conferences, and one summer conducted research at the Texas Children’s Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 2005, her travels carried her to New Orleans as Mi- nority Travel Award Recipient for the Society of Toxicology Annual National Meeting. In addition to conferences all over the U.S., she went to Banff, Alberta, Canada to present her scientific work at a special Symposium on Lipids for the Ameri- can Society of Biochemistry and Molecu- lar Biology. She is the grand- daughter of the late Mag- daline “Al- lene” Hough Goodman, Ethelda Ross, and L.C. Cunningham. She is the great-granddaughter of the late James Roy and Jessie Morrison Goodman, E.J. and Josephine Maynor Hough, and Bennie and Eliza Ross, all of Hoke County. She is a 2002 graduate of Hoke High School, and a member of Bridges Grove AME Zion Church. Hope for Hoke will once again give away free blankets for the homeless and needy in the com- munity. The giveaway will be held Saturday, February 21 begin- ning at 10 a.m. outside Bo’s Food Store on Main Street in Raeford. The bedding is for anyone in need. Families hoping to get blankets for their children must bring the children with them, Hope for Hoke founder Lynn Baum said. Additionally, Hope for Hoke will once again hold the “Why I Like Black” essay contest for Black History Month. The essay should be on the topic of why the writer likes black. To enter the contest, writers should mail the essay to Hope for Hoke, PO Box 1141, Raeford, NC 28376. Essays are due February 26. Entries should include a good phone number, as winners will be notified by phone. The prizes include: $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. The prospective bride is a graduate of Hoke High School and is attending Sandhills Com- munity College pursuing a degree in Nursing. She is employed by Round-A-Bout Skating Rink as a manager. The prospective groom is the son of Laurie Hillman of Windsor, Colorado and Mike Hill- man of Dacono, Colorado. He is a graduate of Windsor High School and attended Aims Com- munity College where he studied Fire Science EMT. He worked at Windsor Severance Fire and Rescue as a firefighter before joining the U.S. Army as a medic in the 82nd Airborne. A June 6 wedding is planned. Gardening also faces challenges. Sometimes it may be just a new name for a practice that’s been around for years. The edible landscape is a relatively new name for a practice my grandparents employed. It’s also a practice we can enjoy in our own landscapes today. Most home landscapes have focused more on appeal and aesthetics in recent years. Healthier lifestyles and local foods are two emerging trends in our culture encouraging placing more practical plants in our lawns and gardens. Edible landscaping is placing Edible landscaping combines looks, taste plants in your home landscape that can be used to provide food in place of plants serving an ornamental purpose only. Plant a blueberry bush for an early blooming shrub; blueberries are also extremely healthy for you. They do require more acidic soil than most plants. Be mindful of this if you select them for your gar- den. Different varieties provide a longer season to enjoy the fruit. Strawberry plants function as a groundcover in the right sunny, well-drained location with the bonus of fresh strawberries. Many vegetable crops perform nicely in mixed borders while providing eye appeal and fresh veggies for the table. Herbs offer variety in textures and fragrances as well as enhancing the landscape. Fruit trees are a viable option to plant instead of a small ornamental flowering tree. Fruit trees provide beauty during bloom in the early spring and fresh fruit in summer and fall. Some fruit trees require more care and attention than others to produce bountifully. Apple and peach trees will require regular spraying to prevent pest problems. Asian pear and persimmon trees are generally easier to cultivate. Vin- ing plants for décor and trellising include blackberries and muscadine grapes, both providing ornamental qualities and fresh fruit. There are exciting educational opportunities being offered locally by area Robeson County Coopera- tive Extensions. Currently, to aid your decisions on fruit trees and small fruits, the Robeson County Center of NCSU Cooperative Extension is providing four (4) workshops in February. There will be a fruit tree training and pruning workshop on Thursday, February 19 from 1-3 p.m. at Geraldine’s Peaches and Produce, located at 10728 Hwy. 41 N, Lumberton. A fruit tree seminar will be held that evening from 6-8 pm. Dr. Mike Parker, NCSU professor and Co- operative Extension Specialist, will facilitate both events. A blueberry pruning workshop will be held Monday, February 23 from 2-4 p.m. at The McK- ellar Farm, 2173 Hwy. 130 W, Rowland. Dr. Bill Cline, NCSU Cooperative Extension Specialist, will present a small fruit seminar that evening at O.P. Owens Audi- torium from 6-8 pm. Dr. Cline will facilitate both events and plans to address blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and muscadines dur- ing the evening seminar. Section 15.1 “Definitions” is hereby amended by adding the fol-lowing definition in alphabetical sequence: Food Manufacturing-Further Processing

Any food manufacturing that includes the further processing of meat from animals and/or poultry including the reduction or split of carcasses into quarter or smaller segments as further processing when they do not occur in conjunction with the first processing operations. The segments produced may include ground meat, case-ready cuts with or without bone and other activities including sausage produc-tion, curing, pickling, smoking, marinating, cooking and canning. Packaging and refrigeration or freezing and distribution are consid-ered normal operations occurring in both Initial and Further Process-ing. Food Manufacturing-Initial Processing

Any food manufacturing that includes the process of killing, bleeding, hide removal, dehairing or defeathering, evisceration and trimming of meat and poultry products in preparation for further pro-cessing.

ARTICLE 7: TABLE OF PERMITTED USES: The Table of Permitted Uses amended by adding “Initial Processing” to the existing entry for “Food Manufacturing” and by adding “Food Manufacturing Further Processing” and by placing a “P” entry in the IL (Light Industrial) and HL (Heavy Industrial). The entry for «Livestock Production» shall be amended by deleting «no swine farms» and adding «Poultry Only».
