MusicThe Roskilde libraries offer you musi-cal experiences and knowledge about music within all genres and in many shapes and forms: CD’s, music videos on DVD and CD, books, sheets and music magazines.

We have a large collection of encyclo-paedias and access to many electronic resources about music on the internet.

Borrow and listen – easy and legalFree and legal download of music from www.bibliotekernesnetmusik.dk according to your own personal taste. You can download the music to the PC and store it on your mp3 player. You must be a resident of Roskilde Kommune to be able to download from the libraries’ net music. You can also borrow a mp3 player.

Download free sheetsThe libraries’ net music in cooperation with SheetMusicNow.com provides access to downloading and printing sheets in the comfort of your own home and PC.

Try the music encyclopaedia GroveYou can search the British music ency-clopaedia Grove, when you visitthe libraries, and when you search on your home PC.

For childrenAt the libraries you shall find picture books, fairytales, and thrillers for good reading experiences. There are toddler books for the youngest, easy reading for new young readers and non-fiction books with in-formation about everything under the sun.

You can borrow movies and games for various game consoles for entertainment, challenges, learning and experience. We have spelling programmes, English for beginners and math. You can also play on the computers and game consoles or surf the net, listen to music, solve jigsaw puzzles, read or simply relax.

We have picture books and novels in English, German, Turkish and Arabic for children and teens.

English for EverybodyEverybody needs a certain amount of English proficiency. That is why we have created ‘English for Everybody’, which both is a section at the Roskilde Library and a home page:

It is important to read out aloud!On their 2 years old birthday, all children in Roskilde Kommune receive a card from the children’s’ libraries offering them a birthday present, which is a picture book, collectable at the Roskilde Libraries.

The path to knowledge

FictionAt the Roskilde Library we have a wide selection of fiction in many languages, 16 different ones to be exact.

We offer novels in Nordic languages as well as in German, French, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Arabic. However the biggest volume of books in a foreign language is in English. Not to mention our ’English for Everybody’ – section, which will be described later on in this leaflet. We also have a series of languages available on audio book, CD and mp3. If you are looking for a specific title, you can try search-ing for it in www.audiobib.dk. or www.netlydbog.dk.

In general it applies, that if you cannot find what you are looking for, we shall try our best to provide it for you at the libraries.

The path to exper iences

You will fi nd more than books at the Roskilde Libraries! The libraries host many exiting activi-ties. Exhibitions, theatre, music, authors’ nights, lectures, movies, vacation fun, and much more.

Each season offers a versatile programme for adults of trendy cultural arrangements.

Each summer children enjoy the popular sum-mer entertainment in the city park and the peo-ples’ park, and the remainder of the year there are lots of exiting and free arrangements for children at the libraries. Every six months, the libraries also publish a programme for children.

The events at the library and in RoskildeYou can survey the many activities of the librar-ies at: www.kulturbasen.dk, which is the offi cial calendar of Roskilde Kommune on the internet. The culture data base is always brought up to date with the latest news regarding time and place for the various activities.

You can also look for information in the cultural database about all offi cial, cultural and sport-ing activities in all of Roskilde Kommune. And you can search for specifi c areas of Roskilde. Information can also be found about the coun-cil’s more than 1500 associations, venues, night classes and museums. You can fi nd the same information with English, German and Swedish access on www.KultuNaut.dk.

The library provides access to informationInformation is available both on print and on the internet. Often it is hard to assess, where the relevant and best infor-mation can be found. Use the librarians to gain perspectiveWe shall answer any question you may have, whether you need factual information, or you seek information in a wider sense. We can also assist with tips on how to search, if you want to learn how to search effi ciently yourself.

Public informationWe have publications and leafl ets from the government, counties and councils, public institutions and the EU. We have access to practically all Danish legislation – both the current and the historical.

Other information of qualityThe library also provides access to other neutral or political quality information, publicised by unions, movements, par-ties, organisations etc.

FINFOSee also www.fi nfo.dk – FINFO presents comprehensive information about the Danish society for new citi-zens and the immigrant communities in 11 languages. You will also fi nd local community information from your area of residence.

Library center for integrationSBCI is an extension of the public librar-ies’ services for ethnic minorities. SBCI purchases and prepares books, music and movies in at least 15 languages, and makes them available to the public libraries. SBCI supports and advises the libraries regarding choices, purchases

and material distribution for the target group.

Europe World Plus Provides information about the countries of the world: geography, economics, and social conditions. You can also fi nd articles about regions’ (political) history and develop-ment, religion and present subject matters in the region. Licensed e-resourcesThe Roskilde Libraries have purchased licenses to a wide variety of e-resources within many subject matters ranging from literature, music and sci-ence to technical and consumer information. The E-resources can be accessed from all the libraries’ computers, but many can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection – we call it remote access.

Help with IT

Computers with free access to the internet are at your disposal at all the Roskilde Libraries. You can e-mail, search the net, work with word processing, Excel, layout and presentations.

A special offer at Dronning Margrethes Vej 14In the net work shop at the Roskilde Library you can use the internet and word or picture processing programmes. In addition, you can print and scan. During all opening hours at the net work shop, there will be staff present, to help and guide you. It is recommended to book an appointment at the net work shop, in due time, phone No.: 46 31 50 70.

Rules for using the internetYou may use the libraries’ computers to seek information on the internet. You may chat, e-mail and send messages on certain com-puters at the various libraries. The libraries have some rules on how to use the comput-ers and what the internet is to be used for.The rules can be read at: www.roskildebib.dk. 11

Local History

If you take an interest in the history of your local area, you can fi nd all information available at the three local history archives of Roskilde Kommune.

The archives store source materials, describing the local history of Ramsø, Gundsø and Roskilde

parishes over the past 300 years.

The staff will help you fi nd information about structures, companies, people and events in books, church books, association archives, census as well as on photos, tapes and fi lm.

Non-fi ctionHobby books, language courses, travelling guides, biogra-phies, food and sea maps are just a few of the many subjects you can explore further. At the Roskilde Libraries there are a total of more than 1400 shelf metres of non-fi ction.

StudentsIrrespective of the nature of the homework or thesis you are working on, the libraries can help you. The libraries have teaching materials, manuals and encyclopaedias about any given subject. The libraries also have access to special e-resources in English within many subject areas and at many levels. If you lack information about a subject, then ask a librarian – we can provide almost everything!

Newspapers and magazinesThe libraries have 13 foreign newspapers and 123 various foreign magazines. You can read the latest edition of the magazines at the Library – all other issues can be bor-rowed and brought home.

Do try out the Library PressDisplay either at the library or on your home PC, where you will fi nd 500 newspapers from 70 countries in 35 languages.

OrganisationThe Roskilde Libraries comprise fi ve sectors managed by the head of the libraries.

The Roskilde Libraries consist of seven libraries and a mobile library. EconomyRoskilde Kommune pays approximately 77 % of the Roskilde Libraries’ expenses. The Rest is funded by revenues of around 10 million DKR, including payment from the State for the central library function. Expenses amount to approximately 60 million DKR gross per year. Net income per citizen amounts to approximately 680 DKR per year. Every Roskilde citizen visits the library more than 8 times a year, and borrows more than 18 issues on average.

Servicing institutionsThe Roskilde Libraries service a number of institutions, where librarians work for a fee. Examples are the Roskilde County Jail and Zealand’s Diocese Library.

Moreover, the libraries cooperate with colleges, nursing institu-tions, children’s institutions, doctors and dentists as well as council day care centres.

Central library The Roskilde Libraries function as a central library for the major part of region Zealand and region Bornholm, and consequently has a close cooperation with more than 13 libraries in Denmark. The central library has a series of obli-gations to fulfi l for the other libraries, including:

• Loan and providing library material• Counselling• Ensuring interchange of experiences across

libraries and staff• Further training of staff

The Roskilde Libraries receive a special central library grant from the State to perform this task. It is an important element of the cooperation between the Danish libraries.

Rules for the use of Roski lde Libraries

Everybody can use the Roskilde Libraries, and borrowing is free of charge. You only need your health in-surance card to borrow. The fi rst time however, we register you as borrower in our data base. Children can be issued a library card, upon showing their health insurance card. IMPOR-TANT: You are liable for any materials borrowed on your card. Therefore, if you lose your library or health insu-rance card, please inform the library without further delay.

Foreign nationals can obtain a library card upon presenting their passport or similar documentation. When the application is being made, the library registers the name, address and cpr number. The library card is personal(nontransferable) and must be brought along each time you wish to borrow material. The owner of the library card is liable for the use of the

library card and is responsible for the materials borrowed on the library card.If the library card is lost, the library must be informed straight away in or-der to prevent misuse. The library must be notifi ed of any change of address. The library is entitled to demand that a pin code is used when using thelibrary card.

Loan PeriodThe loan period is usually 31 days. Some books, games or CD’s may have a shorter loan period. When you bor-row, you receive a receipt. The receipt states, when the borrowed material is to be returned. If the return date is not observed, we charge a fee, according to how late you return the materials. You only pay one fee for all the materi-als borrowed on the same date, if you return them all at once. In case you have borrowed materials on different dates, a fee must be paid for each loan

date, despite the fact that they are returned at once. This also applies, in case you renewed on the same day.

Damages of materialsYou must replace borrowed materials, if they are lost or damaged. In case you return the materials later on, and can document a receipt for damages paid, we shall reimburse you within a year. You may have to pay for all volumes in a set, even though only one volume is missing, because the libraries may not have the option of buying one volume only of the set.Damages for lost or broken DVD’s, CD’s, Playstation and Gameboy games are higher than the retail price. Rights to lend out these materials have to be bought, therefore the libraries pay much more than ordinary retail prices.

tional costs are added to the bill. The Roskilde Libraries accepts no responsibility for damages caused to your equipment (f. inst. CD or DVD player), despite the fact that damage was caused by our materials. Return of materials in the libraries’ mail boxes is your own responsibility. The library card is personal, so a power of attorney is required, if you pick up materials for others.

CopyrightA few materials (f. inst. DVD movies) may only be used according to the terms and conditions listed on the cover and cassette. Further informa-

tion can be obtained at the libraries. Rules and regulations in full can also be obtained at the libraries, or be read at the homepage.

If you return the material too late, a fee is charged depending on how late you return.

For children up to the age of 13 the libraries’ fees are:1-10 days 5 kr.11-30 days 10 kr.More than 30 days 20 kr.6 weeks after the scheduled return date, the case shall be handed over to debt collection for an additional fee of DKR 50. For young and adults over the age of 14 the library fees are:1-10 days 20 kr.11-30 days 50 kr.Over 30 days 100 kr.6 weeks after the scheduled return date, the case shall be handed over to debt collection for an additional fee of DKR 200.

You only pay one fee for all the ma-terials borrowed on the same date, if you return them all at once. In case you have borrowed materials on dif-ferent dates, a fee must be paid for each loan date, despite the fact that they are returned at once. This also applies, in case you renewed on the same day.

If you do not return borrowed materials, or if you owe too much money, your rights to borrow may be revoked.

PIN codeGet a PIN code and log in. A PIN code consists of maximum 10 numbers.

Messages from your libraryIf you reserve something, you are auto-matically notifi ed, when it has arrived.You can make reservations on our home page, and you can list your e-mail address. Then you get an e-mail, when your reservation is ready for pick up. You can also enlist in our news groups and receive a news letter. RemindersThree days prior to return day, you can receive a reminder by text message or e-mail. The fee is DKR 3 per text mes-sage and free of charge per e-mail.

RenewalsIt is possible to renew a loan twice, unless reserved by someone else. In case the Roskilde Libraries do not have

what you are looking for, we can usu-ally procure it from other libraries. You will be notifi ed in writing when it has arrived.

Net Libraries – shelf free librariesThe net libraries offer you a number of services, to help you fi nd knowl-edge and information on the internet. The net libraries are for everybody: Students and researchers, the corpo-rate world, pupils, ethnic minorities, the inquisitive and people with “20 questions for the professor”. On www.Biblioteksvagten.dk f. inst you can get answers to everything under the sun, and on www.litteratursidendk you will fi nd the libraries’ net magazine on fi ction.
