The course will focus on volunteering as a theoretical concept and on a variety of projects and cultural events that take place before and during the festival. Students will have the opportunity to make a difference and contribute to Roskilde’s influence on environmental, social, and political issues through cultural work and cre ative design. All projects are based on the Roskilde Festival’s ideals of DIY (Do It Yourself), equality, humanitarianism, and environmental responsibility. Students will be matched to a project and become part of an active volunteer team. Through volunteerism, this course combines a theoretical framework with project based studies and hands-on experiential learning. Course Description This course is a humanities practicum that is centered on volunteering and Roskilde Festival as an innovative

What is Roskilde Festival?

Roskilde Festival is the largest, annual week-long international cultural and music event in Northern Europe, existing

since 1971. Attracting an audience of over 100,000 attendees every year, Roskilde Festival has developed into a

boundary-pushing cultural-political manifestation. Roskilde Festival is based on the efforts of over 30,000 volunteers

that assist to create the ‘orange feeling,’ a social, interactive, intercultural meeting/gathering environment.

Roskilde Festival is more than just a music phenomenon as it is a dynamic, innovative community involving many

cultural organizations and NGOs. One of the main values of Roskilde festival is to reflect and challenge the

surrounding society and world. Roskilde Festival is a non-profit organization where all profits are donated to

humanitarian and cultural work.

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of

life.

Volunteerism is a key concept in Danish culture. It is a tradition that dates back to the 1830s with the creations of the

first folk high schools. Also there is a strong association tradition in Denmark, which means there is clearly formulated

framework for volunteerism. The volunteerism concept has in recent years been put under pressure as the public

sector in Denmark are becoming more concerned about volunteering and how it can help to ensure the welfare of

society in the future.

Course Objectives

● Gain international work experience in a major cultural event

● Understand volunteerism in a Danish context and partake in an active volunteer team

● Acquire a theoretical framework essential for organizational understanding of the volunteering context

● Communicate and analyze a project through course assignments and experiential learning

Mads Simon Martinussen

Coach and chief consultant. Initiator and co-owner of Public Funk. (www.publicfunk.dk)

Consulting experience includes work with development and change in Danish municipalities and

other public organizations.

Mads has been a volunteer in the association CPH Talks since 2010 and has been a volunteer at

Roskilde Festival, a so-called Roskilde enthusiast working with the festival year round since 2012.

Has additionally had various voluntary short efforts at the festival in the 90s. With DIS since 2013.

Course Format

This course is designed as a combination of group sessions and individual work on an assigned project under the

guidance of the course instructor.

Please note that the distribution of projects is based on availability. You will be asked to prioritize your areas of

interest and be assigned to a project as close to your top choice as possible.

Course Evaluation

In Class Presentation 10%

Project * 50%

Theoretical Paper 25%

Journal 15%

*Involvement in assigned project before and during the festival. Students will be evaluated individually by course

instructor and the particular project coordinator. Project grade will include a Journal Notebook that includes

reflections and observations throughout the entirety of the three-week course.
