Shake,Rattle, & Roll! RAIN DANCE
All of the 4 kinds need a lot of water to grow. The Lulav grows in watered valleys,
Hadassim and Aravot grow near watersources, and the Etrog requires muchmore water than other fruit trees. By
taking these species and waving them in alldirections, we are symbolically showing that
we want enough rain for the entire worldfor the coming year.
The LULAV is a palm branch, the tallest of the bunch.
This represents the SPINE.
HADASSIM are myrtle brancheswith sweet-smelling leaves
shaped like an EYE.
ARAVOT long willow branches whose
leaves look like LIPS.
And the ETROG is the citron which represents
the HEART.
PALM READINGThe Lulav comes from a palm tree, but not any old palm tree – aDate Palm. In 2005, Israeli scientists found a 2,000 year old datepalm seed amongst the ruins of MASADA. They planted it, and asof June 2008, this healthy, 4-foot tall date palm now holds therecord for the oldest germinated seed. Its name? Methuselah –after the longest living person in the Torah!
DR. WILLOW, I PRESUME?In ancient Greece and Egypt, the leaves of the willow tree were
used as a remedy for fever. For centuries, Native Americansacross the American continent used it as a remedy for all
kinds of aches. Thousands of years later, the worldwas formally introduced to
the wonderful medicinalqualities of the willow,in the form ofAcetylsalicylic acid -otherwise known as:
Aspirin!

Every Jew wants to participate in theMitzvah of shaking the 4 kinds onSukkot, and Private First Class GavinEllman is no different. That is whytwo years ago, when she found herselfstuck in Kalsu, Iraq without a Lulavand Etrog, she emailed an emergencySOS to her army chaplain, CaptainShulman in Baghdad to see what hecould do. Sure enough, Shulman had aspare set delivered to him by the Aleph
Institute in Florida, an organizationwhich provides Jewish soldiers with
assistance and materials forholiday celebrations. Shulman
found a helicopter destined toKalsu and placed the precious cargo onboard…just in time for Gavin to celebratethe holiday of Sukkot!
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE What happens to our Etrog and Lulav set afterSukkot? Some people have a custom to set aside theirLulav and save it until Passover, when they burn ittogether with any Chametz they may have found. Some people will take the Aravot branches used onthe last day of Sukkot, called Hoshanah Rabah, andthrow them on top of the ark in the Synagogue. Somelike to use their Etrog to make Etrog-jelly (you’ll needa bunch of Etrogs for this one – see if your neighborswill give you theirs). And some like to pick off theindividual sweet-smelling Hadassim leaves and usethem for the after-Shabbat Havdalah service.
What will you do with yours?
Jewish unity is one of the central themesof Sukkot. The four kinds symbolize four
types of Jews, with different levels of Torah knowledge and observance.
Bringing them altogether shows that no matter how different we may be,
we remain a strong, proud, united Jewish nation!EXPRESS

t was among the jars in the storage room they foundhim, trying to hide from the honor and prestige. “I amnot worthy! Leave me, please!” he begged.
Ignoring his pleas, they pulled him out andmade him stand before all the people. Deeplyembarrassed, Shaul tried to shrink as smallas he could, despite his towering height. The people were impressed by hishumility, but they refused to acceptit. They had asked for a king to ruleover them, and here he was.
All Shaul had done was gosearch for his father’s donkeys. He never did find them.Instead, he found ShmuelHaNavi, who told him thatHashem had chosen him to beking.
The man’s humility was so great that, when he returned home, hedid not even tell his father that he had been chosen to rule thepeople.
“Here is the man Hashem has chosen! There is none like him inIsrael!” proclaimed Shmuel, the Navi (prophet) who Hashem hadcommanded to anoint Shaul as king.
“Long live the King!” roared the people.
And so, Israel’s first king reluctantly began his rule.
His courage was as great as his humility. He fought manysuccessful battles against the enemies of Israel. At the end of hisrule, he heroically went to war against the Philistines, eventhough he knew from a prophecy that he and his sons would fall.
David, his son-in-law and the next king of Israel, wept bitterly for Shaul and his son, Yehonatan,
when he was told of their deaths in battle.“How the mighty have fallen!” he
mourned.
Shaul’s death was on the 28th ofElul, the month in which we
prepare ourselves spiritually tocrown Hashem as our King onRosh Hashanah. Just as thepeople demanded that Shaulrule over them as king, so too inTishrei, do we loudly proclaimHashem as King of the world!

In the last twocenturies, the train, the car, the plane andthe jumbo jet were allinvented. Flying from London to CapeTown takes a mere eleven hours, and we’darrive in Manchester after just 2 hours on a comfortable train.
In the last two hundred years, travel has progressed to a point our great-grandparents never even dreamed of! There are over 50 thousandcommercial flights every day carrying people to different locationsaround the globe in less time than it would have taken to travel fromone village to the next.
Believe it or not, the first commercial flights to the moon are soonbecoming available! Of course, you do need a
spare $100 million topay for the trip, andthere’s no such thing
as a one-way ticket!
Imagine you live in London. Imagine you live in London in theyear 1800.Imagine you live in London in theyear 1800, and your best friendlives in Cape Town, South Africa.
How long will it take to visit?5-10 months, if not more. Make sureto take a sturdy pair of shoes withyou—there’ll be plenty of walking. And a couple of swimming lessonswould come in handy as well—just incase you get shipwrecked, or capturedby pirates!
Even traveling to a nearby town likeManchester would take a good 2-3 daysof hard walking or riding on a horseand buggy if you were really lucky!

FUTUREWhen Moshiach comes, Jewish people around
the globe will gather in the land of Israel to celebrate the arrival of peace and harmony to the world.
How will we get there? Cloud Power! That’s right! G-d will ensure that every one of us gets a first-class pass
to Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel) on the clouds of the sky. No tickets, no turbulence, no waiting in transit and best of all, it will
be a time of peace and harmony!
The advances of the last two centuries are a true sign of the times, the times of Moshiach!

Yom Kippuris the day of forgiveness, when we repent for anything
we’ve done wrong in the past, and G-d forgives us with
a full heart. It is the day when we resolve to act on
our good resolutions, and ask for a second chance
and a fresh start. G-d tells us that Repentance,
Prayer and Charity can help avert a harsh decree, so
before Yom Kippur we give money to charity, and on the
fast-day of Yom Kippur, we spend our time in repentance
and prayer.

SHÄKEA it all together!Every day of Sukkot except for Shabbat we take THE 4 KINDS,hold them together and shake them in all directions to showthat G-d is found everywhere. The Etrog, Lulav, Hadassim andAravot are also a great reminder that it takes all types ofpeople to make a world, and everyone is equally importantand loved in the eyes of Hashem.

TEMPORARY DWELLINGSitting in this temporary dwelling, with a roof madeof leaves and branches isn’t just an excuse to get in
touch with nature. It reminds us of the Clouds ofGlory which protected us when we were traveling for40 years in the desert. Sitting in the Sukkah shows
our appreciation of how G-d took care of us then, and continues to take care

Plus, this is one Mitzvah thatwe can do with our whole bodies – just don’t forgetto say the special blessing as you sit and eat insidethe Sukkah this holiday.
There are so many Mitzvot to do on Sukkot: Sitting in the Sukkah, special blessings to say before we eatin the Sukkah, shaking the Lulav & Etrog – and then rightafter Sukkot comes the holiday of Shmini Atzeret andSimchat Torah – where it’s actually a Mitzvah to get upand dance! Sukkot is truly a time of rejoicing, atime to thank G-d for all the good He hasdone for us, and the constant protectionHe gives us.
Say this blessing every time you eat bread in the Sukkah.*

JUDGMENT DAY
Every month in the Jewish calendar has a specific symbol thatcorresponds to that month. The symbol for Tishrei is a scale, the
symbol of judgment. This is because Tishrei is the head of the new year, the month in which G-d takes a close look at our actions of the previousyear and decides what’s in store for us in the year to come. The daysbetween Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called the Ten Days ofRepentance, a time when we can ask G-d for forgiveness for anything wemay have done wrong, and vow to try harder and improve the followingyear. Let’s make this year a better year for everyone and ask G-d forpeace and happiness with the coming of Moshiach!

Babel (or Babylonia) was
ruled by King Nimrod, a cruel
and wicked idol-worshipper. One night,
Nimrod’s astrologers read in the stars
that the newly-born child of Terach – the
chief advisor to Nimrod’s court, was to
become the head of a mighty nation.
Nimrod became afraid that this boy
would grow up to overthrow his own
kingdom! He immediately commanded
Terach to bring his son to the palace to
be killed. Terach managed to fool the
king, and convinced him that he had
followed his orders. In reality, he
secretly hid his son in a faraway cave!
The child was called Abram,
and he remained in the cave until he was
ten years old. During this time, he would
watch the sun rise every morning,
bathing the land in warmth and
light and helping things to
grow. He soon decided that
the sun had to be god of the
world.
But something troubled
Abram. Each night, the
sun sunk low in the sky and
the moon appeared to push
it away. If the sun could be
pushed away by the
moon, then there had to
be a more powerful god!

By the time he was three years old,
Abram finally concluded that there must
be a great power that had
created, and therefore
controlled, every
single thing in this
world – including
the sun and the
moon. This great power
must indeed be Hashem –
G-d of the universe! Abram had
discovered the existence of one true G-d.
Hashem revealed Himself to Abram and
taught him the right way to live.
Abram grew up and wanted
to teach his family and
friends about Hashem. He tried
doing everything in his power to crush
the foolish belief in idol-worship that was
practiced by everyone around him, but
his father Terach remained unconvinced.
One day, Abram took an axe and
destroyed all his father’s idols, leaving
just the largest intact. Terach furiously
accused his son of destroying his gods.
“But father,” Abram replied, “it was the
largest idol that did it. He was hungry
and wanted to eat first, so he smashed all
the other idols!”
“Impossible!” spluttered
his father. “These idols
are made of wood,
stone and gold. They
cannot move or walk
or talk!”
“Listen to what you just
said,” replied Abram. “These statues have
no power at all. They are merely blocks of
wood and stone. How do you worship
them.”
When King Nimrod heard of Abram’s
rebellious behavior, he ordered him
brought to his palace, to be thrown into a
fiery furnace alive! Hundreds of people
came to watch the son of Terach be
punished for his impudence against the
gods. Abram faced the crowd and
exclaimed that no one, not even Nimrod
had any power against the will of the one
true G-d of the universe!
His courageous speech stirred many
hearts and everyone wondered whether
Abram was right.
They did not have to wait long. Abram
was thrown into the furnace, but the fire
did not even harm one hair
on his head! The people
could see Abram
walking around in
the furnace. It
was obvious G-d
was with him!
Abram left Ur and
escaped to
Mesopotamia with many
followers who accepted and believed in
Hashem. Amongst them was Eliezer of
Damascus who would later become his
most trusted servant.
Abram settled in Haran and
married a beautiful lady
called Sarai. Together, the two of
them devoted their lives to helping
strangers, and spreading Torah
and the way of G-d. They
were famed for their
hospitality, and
had a special tent
with 4 doors, ready
to welcome guests
from all directions.
One day, when Abram was
75 years old, Hashem
appeared to him and said:
“Go out of your country, from your
birthplace, from the house of your father,
to a land which I will show you!” He then
blessed Abram and told him a great
nation would come from him.
Without hesitation, and without any
questions, Abram did as G-d told him. He,
his wife Sarai and nephew Lot traveled to
the land of Canaan. When they arrived,
Hashem appeared again to Abram
and said; “I will give this land to
your children!” This country was none
other than Eretz Yisrael – the land of
Israel. G-d designated the holy land of
Israel to Abram and to his descendants
– the Jewish people!
Shortly after Abram arrived,
a terrible famine broke out in
the land, forcing him and his family to
travel to Egypt to buy food. The Pharaoh
of Egypt saw how beautiful Sarai was and
wanted to marry her, but G-d punished
him, causing painful boils to break out all

over his body. Pharaohreturned Sarai to Abram, then sent them away withmany gifts and servants.
Abram returned to Canaan avery wealthy man. He hadhundreds of sheep and cattleand divided his flocks withhis nephew Lot. Lot andhis shepherds decided toleave Abram and settle in the city ofSodom, in the Jordan valley, which wasknown for its lush, green pastures andbeautiful surroundings.
But Lot soon found himself inthe middle of a terrible war!Four neighboring kings decided to wagewar on the five kings of Jordan, and adesperate battle was fought. The fivekings lost the battle, and all their peopleand possessions were captured by theirconquerors… among them, Abram’snephew, Lot!
Armed with absolute faith in G-d, Abramgathered 318 men, and marched into theenemy camp. G-d made an incredible
miracle for them! As themen picked up handfuls of
sand to throw towards theenemy, it immediately turned
into sharp arrows and deadlyspears! The four kings were
vanquished, and Lot and the peopleof Sodom were freed!
After this victory, G-d appeared to Abram
and promised him further protection andgreat rewards. Abram cried out: “What useare riches to me if I have no one to passthem to?”
G-d called Abram out of histent and told him to looktowards the heavens. “Can youcount the number of stars? They are toomany to count. Like the sands of the sea –so shall be the number of yourdescendants!” G-d blessedAbram that he andSarai would have ason who would bethe start of a greatnation.
When Abram turned85, his wife Saraitold him to marry her maid Hagar, in thehopes that he would have the child thathe longed for. She soon bore him a sonwhom he called Ishmael. But Ishmael didnot grow up as his father had hoped. Heworshipped idols and went against all thatAbram had taught him.
When Abram was 99 yearsold, G-d appeared to himagain. This time, He changed Abram’sname to ABRAHAM, meaning “the fatherof great nations.” Sarai’s name waschanged to SARAH, meaning “princess tothe world.”
G-d made an everlasting covenant(promise) with Abraham. He and hisdescendants must follow in the path of
G-d, and G-d would protect and care forthem, and give them the land of Israel. The command of Circumcision (Brit Milah)was then given as a symbol of thiscovenant. Every newly-born Jewish boy iscircumcised at the age of eight days. Eventhough Abraham was 99, he and all themembers of his household underwent thecircumcision, and the covenant of BritMilah and the Jewish Nation wasestablished forever!
The third day after Abrahamhad his Brit, G-d made thesun blazing hot, so no-one wouldtravel and Abraham wouldnot need to serve anyguests. G-d sawhowever, that itdistressed him not tobe able to perform theMitzvah of welcomingguests. So He sent threeangels disguised as wearytravellers to walk towards Abraham’s 4-doored tent.
Abraham ran to greet them, and invitedthem to sit, wash their feet, and partakeof a fine meal. After they had eaten, theangels told Abraham that they were thereon a mission. Abraham then realizedthese men were really angels, messengersfrom G-d. The first angel, Rephael, healedhim. The second angel Michael informedAbraham and Sarah that in exactly oneyear a son would be born to them! Sarahlaughed because she and Abraham were

old, but they were excited and happy andtrusted in G-d.
The third angel Gabriel, wason his way to Sodom todestroy the city because the peoplewere wicked and cruel. Abraham prayed toG-d, begging him not to destroy Sodom. But G-d replied that the people were sovery wicked and behaved so terriblytowards one another, that they deservedto die.
Two of the angels made their way toSodom where they rescued Lot and hisfamily, warning them not to look back atthe death behind them. Lot’s wife was toocurious to obey the angel’s command. Sheturned to look back at the fierydestruction and was punished instantly;she was turned into a pillar of salt! Wherethe beautiful valley of Jordan once stood, was now salt anddevastation, and agreat sea formed –the Dead Sea, oneof the saltiestbodies of water onearth.
Exactly one year later, G-d’spromise was fulfilled. WhenAbraham was one hundred years old andhis wife Sarah ninety, she gave birth to ason. When he was eight days old, theycircumcised him, bringing him into thecovenant of G-d, and called him Isaac!
Isaac grew to be awonderful boy, following in thepath of hisparents, butHagar and Ishmaelcontinued to pray toidols. Sarah noticed thisand was frightened that they would be abad influence on Isaac. Hagar andIshmael were sent away to the desert, andIshmael grew up to become a great archer, who married and had many children of hisown.
Abraham had endured many hardshipsduring his lifetime. G-d tested his faithand his determination to stay true to hisbeliefs 9 times. And now, Abraham foundhimself tested yet again. When Isaac was37 years old, G-d appeared suddenly toAbraham and told him:
“Take your son, your onlyson, whom you love, Isaac, and bring him to Moriah asan offering on a mountain Iwill show you!”
Abraham did not waste an instant. Earlythe next morning he immediately saddledhis donkey, prepared wood for the fire, and took two servants and his beloved sonIsaac with him on a journey.
Abraham did not question, orbeg, or even plead with G-dfor his son. He didn’t even ask howIsaac would become the father of a largenation if he was to be killed. He simply did
as G-d commanded.
Isaac was a fully grown man, and herealized exactly what was going.
Nevertheless, he too wentwillingly with his father, happy
to be fulfilling G-d’s command. After three days of traveling, Abraham
and Isaac reached Mount Moriah. There, they prepared an altar of wood and stone.Abraham tied up the son for whom he hadlonged and prayed for so many years, andlifted up the knife, ready to sacrifice him.The angels watching from heaven abovecould not bear to see such a sight. Wasthis the reward for such a great andwonderful man? And what would becomeof the Jewish nation? Their tears drippeddown from the skies and fell onto Isaacbelow.
Suddenly, a messenger fromG-d called out: “Stop! Do not stretchout your hand against your son!” Abrahamlooked around and saw a ram that hadbeen caught in a thorn-bush by its horns. He took the ram and in gratitude, offeredit as a sacrifice to G-d in place of his son. This was the tenth and final test, knownas the Akedah (binding),and Abraham hadpassed withflying colors. He had provedhis loyalty to G-dand shown he wastruly worthy to bethe father of a greatnation.

Every year on RoshHashanah, we blow the
Shofar, made from a ram’shorn, to remind G-dof the great deed
Abraham performed, andask that in his merit, we
should be blessed with agood, new year.
Abraham passed away atthe ripe old age of 175, and wasburied in the Cave of Machpelah, in thecity of Hevron, next to his wife Sarah.Abraham lived to see the beginning ofthe fulfillment of G-d’s promise to him.He saw his righteous grandson Jacob, who would grow up to be the father ofthe 12 tribes of Israel!
There are so many lessonswe can learn from ourforefather Abraham: The greatkindness and compassion he showed forfamily, friends and strangers. His warmhospitality and open home to allpeople. His bravery anddetermination to what he knewwas right and true. The pride inhis culture, and his way oflife, and of course hiscomplete and unshakeablefaith in G-d.
Abraham is the fatherof the Jewishnation, andjust
like a father passes onthe DNA in his genes tohis children, so too wehave all inheritedAbraham’s qualities. Youmay have green eyes likeyour mother, or brown hairlike your father. You mayhave inherited your sense ofhumor from your dad, and yourability to sing from your mom. Butyou have something else as well:Jewish pride, care for others, andbelief in G-d. That is somethingeach and every Jewish personhas inherited from ourfather of long ago…
Abraham!

On Rosh Hashanah, it’s customary tohave the head of a fish on the table. We ask
G-d that this year we should be like the headand not the tail. We also have a custom towalk to a body of water on the first day of
Rosh Hashanah (this year since the first day isShabbat, we do this on the second day), and
symbolically throw our sins to the fish, asking G-d tolet us start on a fresh, clean slate. This is called the
Tashlich service. Here are some fishy jokes in honorof our fine, finny friends!
Why is it so easy
to weigh fish?
They have their own scales!
What do youcall a fish
with no eyes?
FSH!
What fish soundslike a telephone?
Herring… herring… herring…
Why couldn’t
the fish afford
a house?Because he didn’t
have anemone.

The day before Yom Kippur we eat two festivemeals—one at midday and the other before thefast which begins at sunset. The Talmud tells usthat whoever eats and drinks on the day before
Yom Kippur, is considered as if he fasted a full TWO days!
On the day before Yom Kippur it is customary to eat:Kreplach! Kreplach are small bundles of rolled pastadough, filled with ground beef and folded intotriangles. The red beef symbolizes the severity ofJudgment, while the white dough symbolizes G-d’smercy. In preparation for Yom Kippur, the Day ofJudgment, we symbolically “cover” the severity, withkindness! Interestingly enough, it is alsocustomary to eat Kreplach on the 7th dayof Sukkot—Hoshanah Rabah!
