INTRODUCTION
The 3402 Application Interface Module (AIM)* serves
as the interface for the Rosemount 3201 Hydrostatic
Interface Unit (HIU) and 3202 Smart Application
Module (SAM). It provides standard RS-232 and
RS-485 Modbus™ outputs to host systems. The
Modbus communication provides process variables,
alarms, and configuration data residing in the HIUs
and SAMs to a wide variety of host systems.
Fisher-Rosemount Control Systems, other
distributed control systems, host computers, and
personal computers are all examples of the HTG
system flexibility. Figure 2 shows a typical system
architecture.
The 3402 AIM powers and communicates with up to
14 3201 HIUs or 3202 SAMs in any configuration on
a 2-wire Modbus Communication and Power (MCAP)
network. The AIM itself requires 115 V ac or 230 V ac
power and can be field or control room mounted.
This power and communication scheme allows easy
connection to existing Modbus communication
highways and makes optimum use of existing wire
runs.

Furthermore, the AIM features MCAP and Modbus
communication LEDs and extensive lightning and
surge protection to ensure maximum system uptime.
MICROPROCESSOR-BASED ELECTRONICS
The 3402 AIM is built around the same stand-alone
modular concept used in all HTG system
components. With its built-in microprocessor, the AIM
converts the MCAP signal to standard RS-232 and
RS-485 Modbus. As shown in Figure 4, multiple
AIMs can be run on a common RS-485 bus to a host
system, providing the flexibility to readily increase
system size, or segregate tank-farm areas for
increased reliability.
The AIM can also be user-configured to act as a
master to other AIMs. In this configuration, the
master AIM will verify the integrity of the data from
the host device and repeat the data to the other AIMs
connected on the RS-485 highway. The master AIM
also sends the data on its own MCAP line to HIUs
and SAMs. Figure 4 illustrates this configuration.

COMMUNICATION FLEXIBILITY
The Rosemount 3402 AIM communicates with the
host device using a 2- or 4-wire RS-485
implementation and an RS-232 serial communication
implementation of the Modbus protocol. The AIM
arbitrates between multiple Modbus masters
providing two RS-232 ports and one RS-485 port.
The RS-485 implementation allows up to 31 devices
(AIMs) to be multidropped on a single Modbus
network. The Modbus network also supports a total
of 247 Modbus addresses with each HIU or SAM
counting as one Modbus address.
Modbus protocol users can easily increase the level
of automation in their tank farms by passing
information from the Rosemount HIU or SAM to other
Modbus-compatible devices. This allows integration
of functions, such as pump and valve control with the
high-accuracy measurements from the HTG system.
The Modbus Communication and Power (MCAP)
network allows the HIUs and SAMs to be
multidropped on a single 2-wire network, thereby
minimizing wiring costs and increasing
communication flexibility.
APPLICATION FLEXIBILITY
The 3402 AIM installation options allow users to
integrate the Rosemount Hydrostatic Tank Gauging
(HTG) System easily with any existing tank farm
architectures. This provides maximum flexibility to
meet today’s tank farm requirements while providing
an automation path for future
HTG systems.
The 3402 AIM requires very little configuration. A
switch bank exists for proper MCAP and Modbus
settings. One switch determines if the AIM acts as a
master to other AIMs.
DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITY
The 3402 AIM passes all of the HIU and SAM
diagnostic data to the host system. In addition,
multiple LEDs provide a visual indication of all
communication port activity. These diagnostic
features allow for easy system troubleshooting.

RS-232 ports can be used by
other host systems to

SAMs connected to that AIM. In
this configuration the RS-232
port of one AIM cannot
communicate with HIUs or SAMs
connected to another AIM.
Figure 3 shows the lines of
communication for a network
using a straight RS-485 host
device configuration.
The 3402 AIM has one RS-485
port and two RS-232 ports.
When AIMs are multidropped on
the RS-485 network and one
AIM is used as the master AIM,
one RS-232 port communicates
with the host device. The
second RS-232 port on the
master AIM may be used with a
host to communicate to any HIU
or SAM connected to any of the
AIMs on the RS-485 network.

communication for a network
using a master AIM
configuration.
