1 Dear Parents and Carers One of our key goals is to introduce our students to a range of female role models in the hope of raising aspiraons, inspiring confidence and empowering them to make good choices in the present and in the future. We were delighted that the entrepreneur, government advisor, consumer champion and charity fundraiser, Mary Portas, joined us this week to be interviewed by our Sixth Formers. She assured them that they don’t need to have all the answers to be successful; she encouraged them to find their voice, to find joy in the small things in life, to celebrate and promote kindness and compassion, and to worry less about making mistakes by always doing the very best they can at whatever they set their mind to. Her frustraons about the pernicious effect of social media and the dangers of obsessing about body image also resonated, as did her reflecons on the connuing pay gap between men and women and the frailes of our current policians in creang a more empathec and evolved style of leadership. I am very grateful to Mrs Wray, one of our parents, for facilitang Mary’s visit from which we all gained an enormous amount. It has been my pleasure to listen to the House Music Fesval this week; soloists, duets, choirs and the Big Band, among many others, have all played beaufully and I am very grateful to Miss Subramaniam and Mrs Blackiston for their hard work to curate this event; congratulaons to all the performers. On Tuesday evening a large group of students joined our half termly TeachMeet training event for staff. These students are our co-planners for this year and, under the guidance of Mrs Ford and Mrs Cook, have learned how lessons are planned by teachers, to enable them to give very helpful and construcve feedback to teachers about the best ways in which they learn. The hall was buzzing with fantasc conversaons between teachers and students and we are very grateful 16 NOVEMBER 2018 Dates for your Diary .......................................... 2 PE Results & Fixtures ......................................... 2 Student News.......................................................3 Word of the Week...............................................3 Student News on Twitter ...................................3 Science and Maths Achievements ...................4 Year 11 Surrey Careers Fair................................5 Exams Notice........................................................5 Library Notice .......................................................5 PSA Rosebery Christmas Fair Stalls ..................6 Rosebery Christmas Concert ..............................7 PSA Christmas Fair Raffle ...................................7 NHS Careers Open Evening ................................7 Bourne Hall Museum ‘Struggling Suffragettes’ .....................................7 THIS WEEK’S NEWS Weekly News Round Rosebery News

indeed to all the co-planners who gave up their time to give us such insightful and valuable feedback.

Christmas is not far away, and the Christmas Fair, the biggest fundraiser of the year, takes place on 30 November. Your child has been given some raffle tickets; please can I urge you to support this event by encouraging friends and family to buy a ticket or two? Thank you for all the donations to the Fair for today’s Mufti Day; your support is greatly appreciated.

Finally, we have opened a Book of Condolence where members of our community can write their tributes to Dr John Millar, who died last week. The book is in the office of my PA, Ali Stuart, but we will add in any separate messages and include cards that any student, or parent, would like to add, before sending it to John’s wife next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

They joined other uniformed organisations and the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Councillor, Neil Dallen, Chris Grayling MP, members of the Royal British Legion, and other local dignitaries for the march from Ewell West Station to the war memorial for the wreath laying service followed by the Remembrance service in the church.

Well done to the 10 students listed right who have completed the most Science questions on Educake in the past week. Educake has questions from Biology, Chemistry and Physics for all year groups. It is a great way of revising for the recall questions in preparation for tests.

Students can be set homework on Educake and can also go on at any time to set themselves quizzes. The students, right, have completed questions from class and independently.

Well done!

Message from the Library The Library and students would like to say ‘thank you’ for the donation of books received during the last two weeks which are very much appreciated.

The Library is looking to replace popular fiction books currently missing from the shelves. We would be grateful if you would check your child’s bookcase for any library books belonging to us, as sometimes students forget to return them!

We would be very grateful for any donations of all of Jenny Hans books especially the trilogy ’P.S. I Love You’ It is a popular trilogy and the Library has lost at least two copies of all three books! Copies of Robin Stevens ’Murder Most Unladylike’ series are still missing and would also be gratefully received.

The Library also still needs art books. If you can help in any way, we would be most grateful. Thank you.

YEAR 11 SURREY CAREERS’ FAIR

On Wednesday 7 November 2018 we took 40 Year 11 students to the Surrey Careers Fair. The event held at Epsom Downs Racecourse had approximately 50 exhibitors from many sectors, including the Surrey colleges, universities, employers, apprenticeship providers and work-based trainers who were there to motivate, inspire and inform young people about the opportunities available to them so that they can make the right next step into Further Education, employment or training after Year 11. The students took part in a variety of hands on activities and all agreed that the event was worthwhile and informative.

Important Information Regarding Summer 2019 Public Examinations

Exam Contingency Date – Wednesday 26 June 2019

We would like to draw your attention to important information regarding the dates for next year’s GCSE and A Level examinations. The Joint Council for Qualifications have decided that they need the option to postpone an exam in the event of widespread, sustained national or local disruption and rearrange for a later date to allow all students a fair and equal chance.

The date that has been set aside as the contingency day is Wednesday 26 June 2019.

This means that all exam candidates must be available to sit exams from the date of

their first exam until Wednesday 26 June 2019. This is not a school decision and

does apply to all candidates in all schools.
