Thank you for joining us today. A small group of diverse parishioners met several times to plan this prayer experience. This is not meant to be a complete response to all the racism in our world. Much work is to be done in our church and in our world to affirm the dignity of every human person, and we hope that our parish will have many opportunities for us to come together and learn about the sin of racism in our society and in our selves. The cover of the program, which you can find in the comments section, will be a visual guide for this rosary. Each page highlights one of the images on the cover painting and will have the text of a reflection. Note that the reflections were all written by parishioners of color. We intentionally chose images of a dark skinned Jesus on the program to highlight the fact that most artwork portrays Jesus, incorrectly, as a white man. Our clergy will not be involved in leading this rosary, but they are all here praying with us. And so, let us pray.

Gracias por acompañarnos hoy. Un pequeño grupo de feligreses diversos se reunió varias veces para planificar esta experiencia de oración. Esto no pretende ser una respuesta completa a todo el racismo en nuestro mundo. Racism has rightly been called America’s original sin. It remains a blot on our national life and continues to cause acts and attitudes of hatred, as recent events have made evident. The need to condemn and combat the demonic ideologies of white supremacy, neo-Nazism and racism have become especially urgent at this time.

We gather now to offer a Rosary, imploring our Blessed Mother to intercede on behalf of all those who have suffered the effects of policies and practices that have led to unjust and violent treatment of so many members of our community. We also humbly ask that the eyes of those of us in privileged groups be opened to see the ways in which that privilege leads to inequality in the treatment of our brothers and sisters, all of whom are created in the image and likeness of God.

El racismo ha sido correctamente llamado el pecado original de Estados Unidos. Sigue siendo una mancha en nuestra vida nacional y continúa causando actos y actitudes de odio, como lo han evidenciado los acontecimientos recientes. La necesidad de condenar y combatir las ideologías demoníacas de la supremacía blanca, el neonazismo y el racismo se han vuelto especialmente urgentes en este momento.

Lk 2:4-7And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

ReflectionIn Jesus’ time people were waiting for the Messiah, and they had clear expectations of who the Messiah would be -- a wealthy and powerful leader; A member of the elite.

But Jesus wasn’t what people expected. Rather than being born in a palace, surrounded by wealth and power, he was born in a stable, surrounded by animals. Rather than being the son of influential people or social elites, he was born to a poor, humble couple from a small town. Struggling and rejected.

Jesus Christ entered our world in an unexpected way, in order to raise up the lowly, the disenfranchised and the oppressed.

He is the black or brown man unjustly beaten and imprisoned. The haggard woman with her tattered possessions on her back migrating to a new country with her children. He is all of those among us who are oppressed and struggling.

Lc 2, 4-7Y José también subió de Galilea desde la ciudad de Nazaret a Judea, a la ciudad de David que se llama Belén, porque era de la casa y la familia de David, para inscribirse con María, su prometida, que estaba embarazada. Mientras estaban allí, llegó el momento de que ella tuviera su hijo, y dio a luz a su primogénito. Ella lo envolvió en pañales y lo puso en un pesebre, porque no había lugar para ellos en la posada.

ReflexiónEn tiempos de Jesús, la gente esperaba al Mesías, y tenían claras expectativas de quién sería el Mesías: un líder rico y poderoso; Un miembro de la élite.

Pero Jesús no era lo que la gente esperaba. En lugar de nacer en un palacio, rodeado de riqueza y poder, nació en un establo, rodeado de animales. En lugar de ser hijo de personas influyentes o élites sociales, nació de una pareja pobre y humilde de un pequeño pueblo. Batallando y rechazado.

Jesucristo entró en nuestro mundo de manera inesperada, para levantar a los humildes, los marginados y los oprimidos.

Es el hombre negro o moreno injustamente golpeado y encarcelado. La mujer demacrada con sus posesiones y harapos en la espalda que migra a un nuevo país con sus hijos. Él es todos los que están oprimidos y batallando entre nosotros.

Mt 26:39Jesús avanzó un poco y cayó postrado en oración, diciendo: “Padre mío, si es posible, deja que esta copa pase de mí; sin embargo, que no se haga como yo quiero, sino como tú quieras.

ReflexiónEn el Huerto de Getsemaní, Jesús pasó por la agonía y el dolor de saber que iba a ser juzgado y que iba a morir siendo inocente.  Hoy día, podemos ver y escuchar cómo muchos son tratados injustamente.  Esos seres humanos también viven en agonía .... ¿Ves a Jesús en aquellas personas que viven bajo la discriminación? Si no ves a Jesús en ese hermano o hermana, oremos para que Jesús, quien sufrió injusticia en carne propia, nos ayude a que seamos justos de corazón sin diferencias.

Mt 26:39Jesus advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.”

ReflectionIn the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus went through the agony and the pain of knowing that he was going to be judged and that he was going to die innocent.  Today, we can see and hear how many people are treated unjustly. These human beings also live in agony... Do you see Jesus in those people who liv e with discrimination? If you do not see Jesus in that brother or sister, let us pray that Jesus, who suffered injustice personally, helps us to be righteous in our hearts without differences.

Jn 19:1-3Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak, and they came to him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.

ReflectionThe Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected people of color across the United States, from disproportionately taking lives in black and Latino communities to fueling racist and xenophobic attacks against Asian Americans.

Black and brown Americans here and across the United States are also grappling with the deaths of women and men of color at the hands of police officers or armed citizens, something that has continued unabated during the pandemic.

To be a church that follows Pope Francis means that as Catholics, we are to be a church that sets an example for all Americans and fights for the protection and dignity of all lives.

ReflexiónLa pandemia de Covid-19 ha afectado en gran medida a las personas de color en todo Estados Unidos, desde tomar vidas desproporcionadamente en comunidades negras y latinas hasta alimentar ataques racistas y xenófobos contra los asiático-americanos.

Los norteamericanos negros y morenos aquí y en todo Estados Unidos también están lidiando con la muerte de mujeres y hombres de color a manos de policías o ciudadanos armados, algo que no ha disminuido durante la pandemia.

Ser una iglesia que sigue al Papa Francisco significa que, como católicos, debemos ser una iglesia que sirva de ejemplo para todos los estadounidenses y luche por la protección y la dignidad de todas las vidas.

Y alrededor de las tres en punto, Jesús gritó en voz alta: “¿Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” lo que significa: “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?” Entonces Jesús volvió a gritar en voz alta y entregó su espíritu.

ReflexiónSegún la Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados, al menos 70.8 millones de personas en todo el mundo se han visto obligadas a huir de sus hogares. Entre ellos se encuentran casi 25,9 millones de refugiados y 3,5 millones de solicitantes de asilo, más de la mitad de los cuales son menores de 18 años. Jesús mismo, junto con María y José, se refugió en Egipto cuando fue perseguido por el rey Herodes. Alrededor del 80% de los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo viven en países vecinos a sus países de origen. Proyecto de migrantes desaparecidos: una organización sin fines de lucro estima que de 2014 a 2019, 33.500 personas murieron mientras migraban. solo en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México 2,243 murieron tratando de cruzar. Todos los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo son personas de color. Cristo se está muriendo con cada uno de los hermanos más pequeños cuando murió en la cruz, uniéndose así a todas las personas comunes que han muerto por actos de injusticia y persecución.

And about three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Then Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.

ReflectionAccording to the UN Refugee Agency, at least 70.8 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes. Among them are nearly 25.9 million refugees and 3.5 million Asylum seekers, over half of whom are under the age of 18. Jesus himself along with Mary and Joseph took refuge in Egypt as he was persecuted by king Herod. About 80% of refugees and asylum seekers live in countries neighboring their countries of origin. Missing Migrants Project – a nonprofit organization estimates from 2014 to 2019, 33.500 people have died while migrating. 2,243 died at the US-Mexico border alone. All refugees and Asylum seekers are people of color. Christ is dying with each one of the least of his brethren as he died on a cross, in that way joining all common people who have died by acts of injustice and persecution.

Then the king will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’

ReflectionThe Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit Priest, recently asked: How can anyone fail to see the resonances of recent events with Jesus on the Cross? Two thousand years ago, Roman soldiers pressed down a wooden cross on Jesus’s body, as other soldiers stood by, and as Jesus died, he cried out, “I thirst.” Last month, a police officer pressed a knee down on George Floyd’s body, as other police officers stood by, and as George Floyd died, he cried out, “Water.”

So if you weep for Jesus on the Cross, do you not also see him in George Floyd? In Breonna Taylor? In Ahmaud Arbery? And in the many others who have been victimized by racism and hate? And if not . . . why not?

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Dios te salve, Reina y Madre de misericordia, vida, dulzura y esperanza nuestra. Dios te salve. A ti clamamos los desterrados hijos de Eva.
