My dear people,

This coming Friday and Saturday the diocese of Des Moines celebrates two important feast days. Friday August 21st, the memorial of St. Pius X the secondary patron of the diocese of Des Moines. Our diocese was erected under his pontificate in 1911. Our Bishop at the time Bishop Edward Daly thought it would be appropriate to have this saintly pope as a special spiritual helper. St. Pius teaches us to never forget the poor and those in need. He teaches us to love the Eucharist and the apostolic teaching that we have been graced with. Our secondary patron reminds all of us to continue to “Restore all things in Christ.” St. Pius X pray for us!

On Saturday, August 22nd we celebrate our patronal feast day, which is the Queenship of Mary. This Marian feast day is rooted in the words of Elizabeth during the visitation, “Who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me.” St. Elizabeth was using the words that mean, “Queen-Mother.” Jesus is the Lord and king of heaven and earth. So Mary who was chosen by the Father and open to the spirit can be considered to be the “Queen-Mother. As Queen-Mother she manifests a tenderness and love for all of her children. Her arms always open for us to experience her motherly love.

St. Bernard, whose feast we will celebrate Thursday, says this about Mary our Queen. “In danger, in doubts, in difficulties, think of Mary, call upon Mary...with her for guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear...” Mary, our Queen, pray for us!

Let us never forget the wisdom of St. Pius the X, but also cultivate a beautiful devotion for our patron, Mary our Queen, who always leads us to her son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Fr. Dan
