NOTE: TIRE CHAINS CANNOT BE USED WlTH THE MOWER ATTACHED.

Mower should be adjusted properly front to back and side to side for good mowing performance. Refer to REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT section (page 22).

Use the runner on the R.H. side as a guide; the blade cuts approximately an inch outside the runner (Fig. 8).

Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area that has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of the machine. This will result in a more even distribution of clippings and more uniform cutting.

When mowing large areas (Fig. 9), start by fur- ning to the right so that the clippins will discharge a way from shrubs, fences, drive ways, etc. After two or three rounds, mow in the op- posite direction making left hand turns until finished.

If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice. The first time cut relatively high; the se- cond time to the desired height.

The left hand side of mower should be used for trimming.

See Speed Selection Chart.

Do not mow tall, dry (brown) grass over 6 in- ches tall. It is a fire hazard.

6 . Operating The Tractor On Hills

. a DO NOT DRIVE UP OR DOWN HILLS WlTH SLOPES GREATER THAN 15" AND DO NOT DRIVE ACROSS ANY SLOPE. REFER TO PAGE 49.

a . Move gear shift lever to " 1st" gear before star- ting up or down hills.

b . AVOID STOPPING OR SHIFTING ON HILLS. c . If slowing is necessary, move throttle control

lever to slower position.

LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM WHEN STOP- PmO AND STARTING TO ALLOW SLIGHT TRACTOR ROLL OOWNWL a AS CLUTCH-BRAKE P€DN MOVES THROUGH CLUTCH POSKION.

d . If stopping is absolutely necessary, push- clutch/brake pedal quickly to brake position. L

e . To restart tractor movement, make sure tractor is in the lowest speed range ("1st" Gear) and release clutch-brake pedal SLO WL Y.

f . Make all turns gradually. Transporting Your Tractor

1 . Brake Adjustment This tractor is equipped with an adjustable brake system mounted on the right side of the transaxle (Fig. 70).

I IF TRACTOR REQUIRES MORE THAN SIX FEET STOPPING DISTANCE IN HIGHEST GEAR, THEN BRAKE MUST BE ADJUSTED. 1

a . Depress clutch/brake pedal and engage parking brake.

b . Measure distance between brake operating arm and nut "A" on brake rod.

c. If distance is other than 1-1/2", loosen jam nut (Fig. 10 ) and turn nut "A" until distance be- comes 1-1/2", Retighten jam nut against nutV ''.

Road test tractor for proper stopping distance as stated above. Readjust if necessary. Tire Care a . Maintain tire pressure in front at 74 PSI and rear

tires at 12 PSI. b . Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect control

chemicals which can harm rubber. c . Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts and other

hazards that may cause tire damage. d . When removing wheel for tire repair (Fig. 72)

7 - Block up axle securely. 2 - Remove hub cap, klip ring and washer to

allow wheel removal. 3 - Repair tire and reassemble. Replace washers

and snap klip ring securely in axle grove. Replace hub cap.

WHEN MOUNTING TIRES, BEADS MUST BE SEATED. OVERINFLATION CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION. I

3. Blade Care For best results mower blades muast be kept sharp. The blades can be sharpened with a few strokes of a file, or on a grinding wheel. We suggest they be sharpened after every 25 hours of mowing. Do not attempt to sharpen while on mower. If you mow in sandy soil check the blades after each two mowings. The sand wears the blade away rapidly.

a . Blade Replacement Raise mower to highest position to permit access to blades.

7 . Remove the hex head bolt, lockwasher and flat washer (Fig. 7 7 ) (turn counterclock- wise) (-).

2 . Remove and discard old blade. 3 . Clean top and bottom of mower housing. 4 . Install new blade with SHARP EDGE DOWN

and secure with flat washer, lockwasher and hex head bolt. TIGHTEN SECURELY.

I 1

ALWAYS USE GRADE 5 HEAT TREATED BOLTS TO ATTACH BLADES. DO NOT USE PLATED BOLTS. CHECK BOLTS IN BLADES OCCASION- a ALLY TO MAKE SURE BOLTS ARE TIGHT. TORQUE BOLTS TO 30-35 FT.- LBS.

Page 15: ROPER12HPLAWNTRACTORLT120CROWNERSMANUAL

REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT b . When grinding, care should be taken to maintain

blade balance and the blade should be checked for proper balance before reinstallation on mower. An unbalanced or bent blade will cause excessive vibration when running, and eventual damage to mower or engine. Replace bent or damaged blades.

c . To check blade balance, drive a nail into a beam or wall. Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed. Place center hole of clean blade over the head of the nail (Fig. 131. NOTE: CENTER HOLE OF BLADE ON NAIL, IF BLADE IS PROPER- LY BALANCED, BLADE SHOULD REMAIN IN POSITION SHOWN IN FIG. 13. IF EITHER END OF THE BLADE MOVES DOWNWARD, BLADE IS NOT BALANCED. SHARPEN THE HEAVY END UNTIL BLADE IS BALANCED.

4 . BA TTERY CARE

should be even with bottoms of vent tubes in cells (Fig. 141. Add ONLY distilled or iron free water if necessary. NOTE: DO NOT OVERFILL.

b . Keep battery and terminals clean. c . Keep battery bolts tight. d . Keep vent caps tight and small vent holes in caps

open. e . Recharge at 6 amperes for 1 hour if necessary.

C h n 68tt.r~ and Temhds Corrosion and dirt on the battery and terminals cause the battery to "leak" power and hinders the opera- tion of the charger.

LEAD-ACID BATTERIES GENERATE EXPLOSIVE GASES. KEEP SPARKS, FUME AND SMOKING MATERIALS a AWAY FROM BAITERES. ALWAYS SHIELD YOUR EYES AROUND BAlTERlES .

a . Remove terminal guard. b . Disconnect BLACK battery cable, then RED bat-

tery cable, and remove battery from tractor. c . Wash battery with four tablespoons of baking

soda to one gallon of water. NOTE: BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET THE SODA SOLUTION INTO THE CELLS.

Superseding Warranty

BRIGGS & STRATTON ENGINE WARRANTY POLICY effective October 1, 1976

Replaces all undated previous Warranties and all Warranties dated before October 1, 1976

When warranty repair is justified, Briggs & Stratton Corporat~on welcomes such repair by any of its Authorized Service Centers.

In most instances, the requests for warranty brought to the attention of our servlce accounts are handled in a prompt routine manner with no question regard~ng their validity. However, some requests for war- ranty are received which are not justifled. In these cases, engine owners may not be aware that the pre- mature failure of their engine was the result o f abuse or neglect, or that the dif f iculty which they experi- ence is caused by the equipment rather than the engine.

BRIGGS & STRATTON WARRANTY covers only DEFECTIVE MATERIAL and/or WORKMANSHIP.

BRIGGS 81 STRATTON ENGINE WARRANTY POLICY

To avoid misunderstandings which might occur between engine owners and authorized Briggs & Stratton ser- vice accounts, we are listing some of the causes of engine failure, where repair or replacement is NOT covered by Briggs & Stratton warranty.

NORMAL WEAR

Warranty will not cover repair where normal use has exhausted the life of a part or engine. Engines, like all mechanical devices, need per~od~c parts replacement and service to perform well. It should be remembered that the service life o f any englne is dependent on the care it receives and the conditions under which i t has to ooerate. Some applications, such as t~llers, trash pumps, rotary mowers, are very often used in dusty or dirty conditions, which can cause what appears t o be premature wear. Such wear, when caused by dirt, dust, spark plug clean- ing grit or other abrasive material, which has entered the engine because of improper maintenance, is not covered by Warranty.

ABUSE OR NEGLECT

1. Bent or broken crankshafts: Such damage is normally the result of abuse, such as striking a solid object with the cutter blade on a rotary lawn mower, and is not covered by Warranty.

2. Engine repairs required from the use of contaminated or stale fuel are not covered by Warranty. Such failures would include sticking valves, and carburetors and fuel pipes which are clogged by gum deposits which form' through the use o f stale fuel. Always use clean fresh regular gasoline.

3. Parts which are scored or broken because an engine was operated without sufficient lubricating oil, the proper grade of lubricating oil or contaminated lubricating oil are not covered by Warranty. Check oil level at least every five hours and refill when necessary. Change oil at recommended intervals.

4. Damage caused by overheating or overspeeding i s not covered by Warranty. Overspeeding or overheating occurs i f the cooling fins become plugged with dirt, grass or debris, or if an engine is operated in a confined area without sufficient ventilation. Clean fins on the cylinder, cylinder head and flywheel regularly.

5. Damage or wear caused by dirt which enters the engine because of improper air cleaner maintenance is not covered by Warranty. Clean and re-oil the air cleaner regularly.

6. Damage or wear caused by grit from blast cleaning spark plugs is not covered by Warranty. We do not approve of cleaning spark plugs on an abrasive blast cleaning machine, since grit can remain in the plug, and later enter the engine.

7. Warranty does not cover the tune up or adjustment of an engine unless the need for such repair i s the result of defects in material or workmanship or both. If equlpment is assembled and adjusted by the owner, the engine Operating and Maintenance lnstructlons are sufficiently clear t o permit the average owner to make minor adjustments. Such mlnor adjustments are NOT covered by Warranty.

8. Broken parts, wh~ch result from excessive v~brat~on caused by loose englne mounting, loose cutter blades, blade unbalance, ~mproperly attach~ng equlpment to englne crankshaft, overspeedtng or abuse in operation, are not covered by Warranty

9. Repair or adjustment of assoc~ated parts or assembl~es such as clutches, transmissions, remote controls, etc., which are not of Br~ggs & Stratton manufacture w ~ l l not be covered by Briggs & Stratton Warranty.

10. Only ORIGINAL Br~ggs & Stratton parts, or parts approved by Briggs & Stratton may be covered by Warranty.

WARRANTY IS AVAILABLE ONLY THROUGH SERVICE CENTERS WHICH HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE BRIGGS & STRATTON CORPORATION. YOUR NEAREST SERVICE CENTER IS LISTED I N THE YELLOW PAGESOF YOUR TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, UNDER "ENGINES, GASOLINE" OR "GASOLINE ENGINES."
