Repeat through the line until the entire small group has a full place setting in its proper arrangement. 7. If they get any part of the placement wrong, they must start all over again. 8. The first team to complete a proper place setting wins. ROOTS CLOSE Every family is so different… Let me state the obvious: you didn’t choose your family. Some of you have great family lives, but for others of you, your family is broken, falling apart, and you almost want nothing to do with them. You need to know that family is the single most important thing in your life! Most of who you are, how you respond to things, and who you will become is directly influenced by your family life. You will learn very great things from your family and you will learn very bad things from your family. Family is the springboard to: relationships, trust, love, conflict resolution, and how we think, feel, and act. Think through your family dynamic--how are your parents together? How are they with you and your siblings? How do you interact with your siblings? Read Ephesians 6:1-3 out loud. While you may have not chosen your family, you can choose how you act in it. You can make a difference in your family. You can help dictate and determine what your whole entire family dynamic will be. For example, if your sibling starts yelling, do you start yelling too, or do you stay cool and calm to deescalate the situation? When your parents ask you to do something, do you argue with them, or do it with out complaining (which in turn sets an example for all your family)? I wish I would have realized earlier on and how much we can influence the people in our family. My challenge to you is to go positively influence your family. 3 1 2 HANGOUT VIDEO: ROOTS SEGMENT 1 WORSHIP VIDEO: ROOTS SEGMENT 2 GAME TIME “Family Dinner” God has put us in a family structure. Some of us love our families, while others of us have a hard time with our family. Truth is, we don’t get to choose our family, but we are a part of it. We need to discover what role we can play in our families regardless of the dynamic. The great part about family is that it is one place where we can get consistency in our lives. Friends, relationships, and things will come and go, but a family is forever.

What do we need? - Plate (1 per student) -Fork (1 per student) -Napkin (1 per student) -Cup (1 per student) -Cookie (1 per student) -Sardine or something gross tasting (1 per student)

How do we play? The students will have to accomplish multiple tasks with their small group who will be their family for the night. The setting: family dinner.

1. The first part of the meal is to set the table. The students will have to set the table in accordance to the life skill video.

2. They should also put the family meal on each plate. (A cookie and a gross-out food!)

3. After they set the table accurately, the next important part is the prayer. The students will have to hold hands before the prayer. The challenge to this is they will have to hold hands in the “human knot.” If you’re unsure how to form a “human knot,” then follow these steps:

- Have the students stand in a circle in groups of at least 4 people - Have them join right hands with someone who is standing across the

circle from them - Have them join left hands with someone who is standing near them - Have them untangle as a group back into an open circle, without letting

go of their partners’ hands (or dislocating any joints) 4. After prayer, the family may begin eating. As a family, they will have to eat all

of the good foods and the gross foods. 5. The first small group to finish their family dinner first wins.

TALK IT OVER SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS 1. What’s your family like? (Mom, Dad, bros/sisters, etc.) 2. What do you love most about your family? Why? 3. What is one thing you would change about your family? 4. What do you think the purpose of family is? Why do we even have them or need

them? 5. On a scale of 1-10 (1=bad, 10=great) how would you say things are going in your

family? Why did you choose that number? 6. What could your role in your family be? What can you contribute? What can you

offer? 7. Open up your Bible or Bible App to Ephesians 6:1-3 and read it together as a

group. 8. How can you do better at honoring and obeying your parents? 9. So, how can you contribute to your family in a good way?

VIDEO: ROOTS SEGMENT 4

LIFESKILLS CLOSE You can definitely impress some people with knowing how to properly set a place setting. People will think you are so smart. The reason why setting the table is so important is because it is all about helping people feel welcome when they come over to eat. It lets them know you care about them. It also helps your parents out and shows them that you are willing to contribute to the family, which is everything we are talking about today. So give it a try this week. Set the table for your family. Let them know that you are willing to help out. If you are going to try this out this week, then we are going to do a little practice getting the proper table setting placement down. Let’s give it a try in this week’s lifeskills game.
