St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church, Minneapolis, MN

Lumen Gentium 10. . . all the disciples of Christ, persevering in prayer and praising God,

and give an answer to those who seek an account of that hope

of eternal life which is in them. 1 Peter 3: 15-

Mysticism and Mission Christ sent by the Father

We in relationship with God are sent into the world, receiving with Christ & the Spirit the movement of love of the Father.

Apostolic life (ministry) is God’s hospitality in us. Our instrument for mission is the way my person is worked on by God.

Our vows do not have an apostolic aim, but they do have apostolic consequences.

Discernment

An ministerial spirituality requires that I learn how to live & act as a discerner of spirits & a seeker of God’s desire for me.

Growing as a person in hospitality to the world means growing as a contemplative in action.

Joining with God (contemplative) as God labors in the world (action)

Christian Hospitality

Lawyer to Jesus: How should I live, in order to inherit eternal life?

Has a unique role in moral development

Welcomes a relationship with the whole person, not just an aspect of the person.

Caring for the needs of strangers, even if risky, leads to a transformation of the self & the other by discovering the depths of human connectedness.

• Civility & tolerance are character traits that rational beings endorse, enabling people to live with fundamental differences without reconciling them. They mediate our relationships with those we do not love.

• Proceed from a view of human community with minimal expectations.

• Do not require sacrifice

Virtues are defined in relation to happiness.

Virtues carry real risks & dangers, of a sort toleration does not.

The virtue of hospitality is open to differences; invites strangers into a deeper relationship & welcomes their goodness – not just their beliefs.

De-centers one’s perspective Shifts the frame of reference

from self to the “other” Changes our idea of “home”
