What happens when you put an ‘empty space‘ in front of thirty of the country’s finest interior designers?

Some pretty interesting rooms, to be sure! New York City’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House recently drew thousands of design enthusiasts to Manhattan for a glimpse of luxury rooms expertly transformed by a who’s-who list of American designers.

For the first time in the show home’s 40-year history, the location chosen was a high-rise condominium on the upper east side (rather than a townhouse on the upper west side). Though attributed to a shortage of townhouses currently for sale, the 21st and 22nd-floor suites of The Aldyn (60 Riverside Blvd) weren't entirely unsuitable for the high-rise-home reality of most New Yorkers. (The views over the Hudson River weren’t half bad, either).

Housed in a pair of penthouse suites, each of this year’s unique spaces were once again compliments of interior designers who volunteered their time (… and vendors their products), so that public viewing fees could go directly to support the Kip’s Bay Boys and Girls Club of New York.

Ahead… just some of the highlights!

The first Kips Bay Decorator Show House opened in 1973, when members of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club launched the idea of a show house as a fund-raiser to benefit after-school and enrichment programs for New York City children. Over the course of four decades, this project has raised over 17 million dollars. Today, the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is one of the most prominent and responsive youth devel-opment agencies in New York City and a “flagship” of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Designers Robert Schwartz and Karen Williams of St. Charles of New York turned the corner suite of this Manhattan condominium into a stunning, state-of-the-art kitchen and breakfast room (see pg. 5)… just one of over two dozen inspirational room designs featured in the 2012 Kip’s Bay Decorator Show House.
