We remain independent for a variety of reasons but the unique character of Romsey is such that we think we can make a better contribution to both the business community and the citizens of the town by retaining a distinct identity.
We have a very simple objective:
To create a thriving local commercial environment in which companies in the area are able to develop as their owners wish, in a prosperous harmonious and supportive local community.
We have set out to do this in five distinct ways:
Providing a range of services directly to member companies
Promoting the success of members in trading with the world at large but particularly with the local community, both business and consumer
Lobbying government and local government on issues of concern to member companies
Encouraging a sense of social responsibility amongst members
Providing means by which companies can integrate with the local community
While we can provide these services we can only be successful if you take advantage of the opportunities and participate in the activities provided by the Chamber.
In this booklet you will find guidance on how to access the Chambers services and activities. Please get involved; together we can prosper and make a difference to the community as a whole.
Welcome aboard

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP
While we have lots to offer there are some things that you need to do if you are to benefit fully from your membership.
You also need to decide how you want to engage with the Chamber and your fellow members; you can either take a fairly passive approach, just taking advantage of the savings and such like or you can be more active.
We are affiliated to the Hampshire Chamber so you have access to a huge range of services in addition to those provide directly by ourselves. However, as a smaller independent Chamber you are part of a very intimate network. You will be surprised at how much you can benefit by forming relationships with other members regardless of your or their size or activity. For that reason alone we would encourage you to take the active approach.
Whichever approach you adopt there are some things you should do now:
Register with Website
Subscribe to the online Newsletter
Think about offers you might make to other members to attract more business
Check out other members’ offers
Take advantage of some the utility cost saving service
Then what?
The more you put in the more you will get out of the Chamber. By participating you will get to know other Chamber Members. They can support you, supply you and maybe even buy from you! But to find out you need to engage with them.
There are also many challenges facing business in Romsey; we face the same challenges as any business in this economic climate but there are also major plans for Romsey to which business should contribute their ideas.
There are also routine matters that we can raise with local councils. We have a good relationship with the council officers who are receptive to good ideas and can help sell them to our councilors.

FIRST STEPS
REGISTER WITH THE WEBSITE
Please register with the website! And subscribe to the news letters.
We try to do as much as possible on line in order to minimise costs. If we send just one letter a month to our members it costs almost 10% of the membership fee.
To register with the website go to the www.romseychamber.co.uk, navigate to the member’s page, on the right of the page you will see a small panel for logging in. At the bottom of this is a link to the registration page, click on that and it will take you to the registration form. Complete the details as requested and submit the form.
You will, automatically, be sent an email asking you to click a link to confirm you wish to register with the site. Please click on that link. This will return you to the website but it will also send an alert to the Chamber to tell us that you have applied to register. We must then check that you really are a member. Because we do not man the office full time it is possible that this will take up to 48 hrs. When we confirm your membership you will receive an email notifying you.
We have to run this process because we receive an average of 5 spoof applications per day despite the security code.
SUBSCRIBING TO THE NEWSLETTER.
When you join the Chamber it is assumed that you wish to receive emails from the Chamber so you will be subscribed to the email system on registration with the site.
However, because we maintain “best practice” on email spam you will see that there is an unsubscribe link the bottom of our emails. Should you wish to unsubscribe at any time you can use this link. It will take you to a page on the website where you can delete your name from the mailing list.
Should you wish to subscribe in the future you can do so by entering your details on the online “Subscribe” form.

PROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS
There are three primary ways in which you can promote your business using the Chamber:
Chamber Website
Chamber Mailshots
Networking meetings
Company Entry on Chamber Website
THE WEBSITE
There are four areas specifically designed to help you generate more sales..
Member Listing
Member to Member Offers
Offers to the Public
Business News
MEMBER LISTING
The Entry on the Members page will help in two ways.
1. We are now promoting this list to the general public and encouraging people to use local companies. This is has benefits not only for our members but also for the community has a whole; it helps to make the entire community more prosperous and cuts down the environmental impact.
2. It creates links to your website which helps to raise your profile on Google and other search engines.
There are two ways to create an entry:
DIY: Log in to the website and navigate to the Chamber Members page. You will find a “User Menu” on the right side of the page; select “Create a Listing Item” and complete the details requested.
If you do not find a category that suits your business email us or give us a call and we will add it.
If you are not happy with the way it looks you can also email us and we can adjust it for you. If you chose to do this please include a telephone number.
Page | 6
Ask us to do it: Email us and include photo’s, your contact details (Address, telephone, website etc) and the “blurb” you want. Alternatively if you would like us to lift info direct from your website and be creative with it then let us know.
OFFERS TO MEMBERS
This Section of the Site is specifically for member to member offers.
These make sense because the Chamber is effectively providing you with a sales method that costs you nothing and it encourages others to join the Chamber for the additional benefit they receive.
Bear in mind that if you have products or services that are of use or interest to the general public you can offer them to the staff of other chamber members through the website.
We will be adding the ability for members to add their own offers to the website, which is one of the reasons why you should register on the website; however you should currently email details of the offer, any pictures and links to your website to [email protected]
Please note that in the future this section will become private – accessible only by members.
OFFERS TO THE PUBLIC
In the same way that you can make offers to the Chamber Members you can
make offers to the public.
Currently the number of visitors to the site is fairly low but we are building
the website in a way that is intended to make it genuinely useful to the
people of Romsey as well as to visitors from outside the area.
By adding any offers that you may have you will not only reach a wider
audience but also help make the site more popular and thus help to develop
its usefulness for all members.
As soon as we have a number of offers we will begin an active promotion to
the general public.
Page | 7
CHAMBER EMAIL AND MAIL SHOTS
Romsey Chamber will automatically email all offers on a monthly basis to all members free of charge.
In addition Hampshire Chamber offers a similar service – at a cost – but to a far larger audience.
E‐shots can be included in our monthly member to member bulletin for £99
+VAT. Contact Hampshire Chamber for dates and to book
Hampshire Chamber monthly mailings can take up to 8 member inserts. You
can choose to mail 1, 2 or 3 areas (Southampton/Portsmouth/North
Hampshire)
Costs are £150 + VAT for 1 area, £285 + VAT for 2 areas and £400 + VAT for all
3 areas. Again contact your local office for mailing dates and to book. Inserts
need to be delivered to our Southampton office.
BUSINESS NEWS
We also have a local Business News section. Here you can talk about your
business, what it is doing, about your people and your successes.
Using this section can help in a variety of ways. Most obviously it allows you
to build links to your website which helps to raise its Google rankings.
You can also give public recognition to employees who make a major
contribution which not only builds employee commitment but also helps to
build your brand.
Telling other members about your successes also strengthens your brand.
NETWORKING MEETINGS
We run three forms of regular meetings that provide opportunities to get to know fellow members and build useful business relationships:
Monthly themed meetings
“Ad hoc” open meetings
Page | 8
Our networking meetings are different from the usual approach; we do not go there to sell to each other. Instead we build relations, discover what others can do for us, see how we can support others and develop trust and confidence in each other. Out of this grows business!
We find this works better than the standard networking groups where attendees are hell bent on selling to one another. Come along to our meetings – you will will enjoy them.
Monthly Meetings
These may be purely social or set around a specific theme, recently we looked at “Increasing Sales in Difficult Economic Times” and in the near future we will be looking at:
Planning to make money
Developing extraordinary people
Really using the Internet
At these meetings there are one or more speakers followed by a a chance to socialise and make new contacts afterwards
Ad Hoc Meetings
These are held to focus on a specific topic or event of importance to Chamber Memebrs, Romsey or the community in general. We publicise them through the newsletter, the Romsey Advertiser and whatever other means are appropriate at the time.
SAVING MONEY
UTILITIES
Unless you already have a utility broker it is likely that you are paying significantly more for your gas and electricity than you need to. It sounds extraordinary bu
t almost every company is on the wrong tariff and is probably not even using the cheapest supplier for that tariff.
You can begin saving almost immediately by contacting the Chamber’s utility brokers through the website by visiting http://www.romseychamber.co.uk/member‐discounts/20‐utilities.html
Page | 9
You can expect to save between 25% and 70% on your current bills.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Managing risk and the issues of employee productivity and welfare all have to be dealt with. Available to Chamber members, this Healthcare Plan is an excellent risk management tool as well as an extremely valuable employee benefit. All pre-existing conditions are covered, no medical is required and employees can enjoy immediate cover - no waiting periods apply.
Supplied by Westfield Health – “a not for profit organisation”
OTHER THINGS TO DO
POST JOB VACANCIES
You can post job vacancies on the website free of charge. This is intended to be a direct benefit to members but it is also part of a larger more subtle campaign to promote our members.
On the website is a complete list of members – or it will be if you submit your details. This is accessible to the general public and we are taking active steps to encourage the local community to visit this list and buy from our members. If you post a job vacancy there it gives local people a reason to visit the website, increases the traffic and generally produces a virtuous cycle of activity – it also boosts your search engine rankings.
VISIT THE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORUM
The forum offers the opportunity to raise debate issues that affect your
business. You can also raise general business questions. If you have a
problem you can be pretty sure that someone else has experienced it and has
a potential solution for you.
GETTING SPECIFIC BUSINESS ADVICE
If you have a pressing business problem such as:
Page | 10
Cash Flow
Tax
Staff
Legal
Call the Chamber office and we will put you in touch with someone who can
give guidance or find the right specialist to help.
For more general support, there are lawyers, accountants, web, IT and
Marketing specialists amongst others within the Chamber. Consult the
business directory on the Website.
GIVING BUSINESS ADVICE
Are you in a business which enables you to help others directly when they
have problems. This could include such things as:
Accountancy
Legal Matters
Human Resources
Health and Safety
You can volunteer your services through the website. However do remember
that this is not an opportunity to tout for business but an offer of free
impartial, dispassionate advice. Having said that, it is quite likely that yo will
raise your profile and find more clients by contributing in this way
USE THE BUSINESS DONUTS – QUICK GENERAL GUIDANCE
If you are seeking general guidance the Business “Donuts” are a good place
to start.
You will find access to them on the website at:
http://www.romseychamber.co.uk/information.html
Page | 11
They cover the areas of Business Start‐ups and Young Businesses, IT and
Marketing.
This advice is supplied by a third party company that was given seed capital
by Google to get started. The three sections pull together some excellent
general advice which will help you to develop your own ideas.
FINDING GRANTS
Free money is always good to have and there are links on the website to
grant search. Do remember however that grants are really not free money –
they are made to help organizations do specific things and they are only a
contribution.
POST NEWS OF EVENTS ON THE SITE
One of the ways in which we can make the website effective as tool for all
Chamber is to make it the place for local residents to come when they want
to know what is happening in Romsey.
We have already begun to invite local organisations to add details of events
they are running and we are building a directory of local clubs, societies and
other organisations.
If you are involved in running events or such clubs please let us know and we
will give you access to post details.
