Veterans’ Chairman’s Day, June 1st 2012
Once more the biggest field of vets for the year gathered in their attempt to win the Chair’s prize. Why is the
turn out so good? Well the chair always has to provide tea / coffee and toasted tea cakes for the members of
the Vets’ Section who take part. Freebies!! Hence a massive field.
Form is temporary but class is permanent and so it proved with Bob Stirling, that golden oldie Jack Nicklaus
look-a-like, who won with 21points in a card play-off from Barry Logan, he of the boomerang drive. In 3rd
place with 20 points was Peter Drinkwater.
The 18 hole putting competition was fiercely contested but Eric Jones won with 17 strokes and was consigned
to taking home the trophy to put on his mantelpiece for a year.

All our Yesterdays -2006 Martyn Wilson, Captain
Following on from John Spence’s recollections of his year of office as Captain of the club, your editor has asked
me to cast my mind back to recall the special moments of my year as Captain alongside June Levy, Lady Captain
and Paul Trafford, President. There were undoubtedly some notable events and one or two which perhaps I would
have preferred not to have happened.
As early as the AGM when I was installed there was some controversy as the Council had previously decided to
review the dress code rules and, as an interim measure, allow a wide range of options including shorts in the
clubhouse during the 2006 playing season. This did not go down too well with the more traditionalist element of
the membership, but we persevered and, after some modifications, the result was the more relaxed attitude which
continues to this day.
I also upset a few members by replacing the “Captain’s Sunday” Cocktail Party with the Barbeque for all
competitors and families, which has been continued very successfully by subsequent captains.
Captain’s Weekend was undoubtedly the highlight for me. The new ponds on holes 2 and 10 came into play for
the first time and we were blessed with superb weather throughout. This enabled the Club to hold the prize
presentation outside on the putting green. Neil Miller was the winner of the 36 holes prize, and at the same time I
presented the prizes to Diane Houghton and John Boydell, the winners of the Captain’s prizes for the Ladies and
the Veterans Sections respectively.
For most of the summer I thought the Club was going to win the Dunham Forest Trophy again as the team, which
was brilliantly managed by John Allman, marched imperiously through to the semi-finals, but alas it was not to
be, and we were knocked out by a strong team from North Manchester by the narrowest of margins.
The Ladies Team for the Mail on Sunday National Tournament also had a great run through to Round 8 of the
contest before succumbing to the Ganton team, which included 3 England International players, and the combined
handicaps of the 5 team members of their team totalled just 1.
At least we managed to win the Ryder Cup at the K Club during my stewardship, and Ian Smith and I had a
memorable few days in Dublin and saw all of the play on Saturday and Sunday before flying home late on
Monday, but not before a refreshing visit to the Guinness Brewery.
On the social scene, Glyn Roberts and Alan Walker masterminded a series of innovative events and I shall keep
the image of Barney and Joan Kelly bopping away to Dancing Queen by the Abba Girls for many years to come.
2006 saw the installation of Martin Thompson as Course Manager. It was a deliberate decision to appoint a highly
qualified professional with the responsibility of advising the Greens Committee what needed to be done, rather
than the other way round. This has resulted in many significant improvements to the golf course during Martin’s
tenure.
Also during 2006, Matthew Ellis was appointed as
Club Professional, following the departure of Lee
Sullivan and Joe Brahimi also left, having served
the Club as chef/caterer for nearly 4 years.
However the most significant development for
the Club during 2006 was the acquisition of
the land adjacent to holes 3, 4 and 5. Andrew
Rexstraw, John Harrison and Richard Davies
finally concluded the deal, which I am sure will
protect the boundaries of the Club in the future.

June Levy
The good air of Romiley produces another
Octogenarian. June Levy (the indomitable golf,
hockey and tennis player) turned 80 on 9th
June,
2012. How does she do it, in between all that
chattering? This dear and respected past Lady
Captain spent the weekend of her birthday with her
family but her friends at the golf club helped her
celebrate in style. June’s Tuesday lunch group
toasted her with wine and cake and on Thursday after
playing she was presented with flowers from the
Lady Captain and the President of the Past Captains.

Still Batting at 80
1. Some ladies at 80 are struggling to walk,
They totter and need to be watched like a hawk.
A few years ago June encountered a blip,
But there’s no stopping now that she has her new hip.
2. Some ladies at 80 are doddery and weak,
But our June plays golf at least three times a week.
Not content just to play she wants to reduce,
Either that or it’s Alex she wants to seduce.
3. By 80 most ladies can’t run very far,
But not our June, who’s a tennis star.
Her only concern and the thing she regrets
Is that now she can only manage two sets.
4. As ladies mature they often grow fat,
But our June we know will have none of that.
We’ve seen no sign of her losing her hearing,
There’s still not a chance of deafness nearing.
5. Usually at 80 it’s harder to see,
Especially a ball that’s hit long from the tee.
But June’s eyes refuse to go like the masses,
Not even for reading does she need to wear glasses.
6. And one thing’s for sure, as all of us find,
Her recall’s okay, nothing wrong with her mind.
Often memories fade and dementia begins,
But June never forgets and on quiz night she wins.
7. The main thing that June is an expert at
Is stories and rhyming and idle chat.
Whenever you meet her she tells a long tale,
And attempts to stop her will usually fail.
8. It’s best to just listen and nod your head,
Don’t interrupt or you’ll break up her thread.
But if you’ve a problem you manage to share,
She’ll help if she can, she’ll always be there.
9. She’s a heart of gold, an example to all,
Not for our June a wheelchair and shawl.
Long may it be so, don’t burst your balloon,
It’s your birthday today, happy 80th, June.

JUBILEE/ROCK ‘N’ROLL FUN DAY AND A DICEY 18 HOLE VEGAS SCRAMBLE – JUNE 4TH
2012
After a Sunday of non-stop rain, Monday dawned bright and sunny and stayed that way all through a very exciting
day at Romiley Golf Club. The day kicked off with an 18 hole competition based on a Texas Scramble but tweaked
by his Ebness, the Vice Captain, Simon Hebden.
In an evil little twist the Vice gave each four ball a dice. Numbers 1 to 4 on the dice would be assigned to each
player according to the score card and nos. 5 & 6 meant you could pick any drive. So basically, three of you could
drive the green, be 6 inches from the pin, your fourth team member could then shank his drive deep into the trees
and if you rolled number 4 you all had to go and help him find it or play 3 off the tee!! Nice!!
Many members turned up in red, white and blue outfits or in 1950’s style clothing, including yours truly.
Unfortunately the string tie I was wearing had to be stuffed inside my shirt during play as the pointy metal bits on
the end threatened to take my eye out every time I swung a club!!
After an extremely enjoyable game, everyone came in to the bar for well deserved refreshment and then went
outside to collect a delicious meal of burger or sausage with, chips, coleslaw and salad prepared by Mrs H and her
wonderful girls. The Captain himself was also doing his bit, helping out behind the barbecue. A sound track of all
the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs accompanied the eating and drinking with many people singing along to the music.
One young lady who hadn’t been born when this music first came out said what happy music it was and how much
she had enjoyed it. Quality will always out!
The Captain then presented prizes to the best dressed members. Jim Millington in a superb Union Jack outfit was
the overall winner, with several ladies also mentioned in despatches.
Then came the results of a very close fought match with 3 teams within a point of each other. In third place were
Mr. Vice, Lee Prendergast and two others, second was the Captain and Janet with two others, but the winners with
a score of 59 were Tony and Glynis Hunt and Nick Schofield and his mum Lynn. After the formalities were over
we all spent an enjoyable afternoon talking, drinking, laughing, drunking and larfing and durnking ‘n’
dinking..........

June 2012
This was a match played in dreadful weather and the win for Romiley
was muted. Mike Wilson, the chairman of the vets, felt that his only
chance of getting his name in lights was to change his name to “exit”.
But he told the assembled gathering that he had had a hole – in – none.
The ball went out of bounds but the divot went in the hole. Happy days.

Centenary Cup, Thursday, 7th June 2012
Barbara Leith was presented with the magnificent
Centenary Cup on 21st June. The medal comp was played
on 7th June and Barbara won with a fabulous score of 67,
playing 9 under, 11 shot lead (css – 76 – very tough
conditions)
In second place with a net 78 was Lady Vice Captain,
Francine Walburn.
Barbara expressed special thanks to Liz Goddard, her
partner that day. Liz commented how weary Barbara
looked going up the 15th, but that wasn’t surprising
because Barbara’s battery had run out of juice on the 10th.
With all that stacked against her and still a fabulous score,
there are obviously even better rounds to come. Watch
this space!

Captain’s Away Weekend – 9th
& 10th
June 2012
Following on from last year’s spectacular success (for which
I am now claiming all the credit as Smithy is now back in the
ranks), an intrepid band of 18 Romiley golfers set off on the
Saturday morning for 2 rounds at Cookridge Hall near Leeds,
and another extremely enjoyable trip.
That Saturday the weather on our side of the Pennines was
unpromising to say the least, and there was much grumbling
about having to take waterproofs in the middle of June, but as
we crested the summit on the M62, the skies cleared (a bit)
and by the time we got to our destination, we were hopeful of
a dry round.
The first day was a team event, with two scores counting
from three, and despite the blustery conditions, Andy Reed,
Joe Doyle and Jim Millington prevailed with 75 points. This
was a commendable effort because despite some feeble
objections from the writer and Mr. Captain suggesting that
the yellow tees would present a suitable challenge, there was
a consensus to play the course from the white tees stretching
to 6,515 yards. This gave Mr. Captain further opportunity to
complain about his injured ankle, which I am sad to say he
exploited to excess.
Brent Shore with his first-ever win at golf
Lightning Lee Prendergast with Mike Murray
delighted to accept the Booby prize
After a true “golfers’ dinner” of steak pie, chips, peas
and gravy, followed by sticky toffee pudding and
custard, the party adjourned to the hotel, which, as also
happened last year, was hosting a wedding reception.
“On tour” rules prevent the disclosure of the evening’s
adventures, but I would be remiss if I did not report one
comment made during the evening by Steve Harrison in
the “Stadler & Waldorf” contingent, when he
studiously informed the group that “the bride will be
the woman in the big white dress”.
Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny, and the
wind, which had caused such problems the previous
day, had died down to a gentle zephyr. The competition
was a singles stableford, with the added excitement of a
“Captain’s v President’s Team” event using the
aggregate scores of the individual players.
The competition was running smoothly until late in the
afternoon, when, with three groups still on the course,
the heavens opened and the 18th
hole quickly became
unplayable. I was subjected to much ribaldry, because
after playing the first two holes, I had decided to leave
my waterproof suit in the car, and as a result was
completely drenched when I got back to the clubhouse.
Steve Harrison, Sunday winner with 32 points.
His ability to distinguish the bride form the groom
enabled him to actually kiss the bride.
After adjusting the event to 17 holes, Steve Harrison
emerged as the winner with 32 points, with Mr
President a close second with 31 points. The Captain’s
team was victorious by a considerable margin in the
team match, and the £10 note which he won as his share
of the pot gave Brent Shore the first thing he has ever
won playing golf. After the main prizes had been
distributed there were also presentations of Aunt
Bessie’s Yorkshire Puddings for the individuals
finishing last. I will not name the recipients to avoid
embarrassment, but I suspect Janet Worthington may
have been asked to roast a rib of beef in the week
starting 11th
June.
From its humble beginnings this event has now
acquired two trophies (Sunday winner and the Captains
v Presidents match) along with the opportunity to win a
few quid in the daily sweeps. Jim Millington retains his
position at the top of the money list, having cleaned up
last year, and picking up the team prize on Saturday and
being lucky enough to be in the Captain’s team on
Sunday this year.
Hopefully the event will become an established date in
the club diary and continue in future years.

The weather just about held for the 120 competitors in this popular event. Seniors are notorious for being ready

the speed of the greens. Also receiving favourable comments were Mike Bury and his team of efficient helpers.
All the waitresses were kitted out in our new sponsor’s gear and looked terrific. Look out for them at future

Junior Section
Vets’ Challenge Trophy:
This bogey competition was held on Sunday 27th
May.
Unfortunately it coincided with Fathers’ Day and there
was a poor turnout. Nevertheless two groups went out a
and the Competition was won by the Junior Captain who,
playing off 20, returned a very creditable ‘even’ score.
Oliver started the year with a handicap of 24 and this
has now been cut to 18.

Captain’s Prize: This Junior Medal Competition will be held on 8th
July. However the Captain, Derek
Worthington, wishes to include ALL Juniors in the Day. Consequently, for those unable to compete for the
Captain’s Prize, there will be a number of fun chipping, putting and driving competitions.
Junior/ “Parent” Event – 27th
August: Details will follow in due course but it is proposed to hold a number of fun
competitions in which involvement rather than skill is the important thing. Please make a date in your diaries.
ROMILEY LADIES BELL CUP TEAM THROUGH TO FINAL 16
A difficult draw away against Blackley was not helped by the recent bad weather. One early Saturday morning
match on June 9th
had already had to be cancelled at the very last minute, due to their course closure. Another
early tee off re-arranged match for Saturday 16th
June also did not look too promising, with wet weather and 2 of
Romiley’s key players sick. However, we were pleased that Anne Ludford & Elizabeth Wilde stepped in at very
short notice to help the team out.
The Blackley course was very wet in places but deemed playable although the “lift clean & place” rule was applied
for the competition and thankfully the rain was holding off – just!
Again the pairings were very evenly matched with little or no shots given. First out was Denise Booth who had a
very good match and won on the 19th
hole, to be followed by Astrid Ceelen with a win of 2/1. Pauline Walker had
a tough opponent and lost her match on the 16th
– it had not helped when her trolley broke down, but fortunately a
replacement was found for the last few holes.
Linda Moore was playing well and won her game 2/1 and Sandra Hewitt had a 2/1 loss, another close game, which
she assured me she thoroughly enjoyed. So it was looking promising for Romiley at this stage with 3 wins, 2 losses
& 2 games still playing. The tension began to build when Anne Ludford halved the 18th
and was all square. So
back to the 1st / 19th
where shot for shot the hole was halved again. On the 20th
after two wayward shots in the
trees, Blackley conceded the hole which gave Anne the win she richly deserved and Romiley the 4 wins to take us
through to the next round. The last player out Liz Wilde was also doing well and although dormey 2, Romiley
conceded this game to finish the match 4 / 3.
A really good result, under difficult conditions and, another great team effort! Thank you to the trolley pullers Janet
Worthington, Lady Captain, Audrey Jones & Gillian Walker who all had an early start to get to Blackley. There
was another rather strange looking Romiley supporter, me. I looked a picture in my waterproofs, rain hat, spotty
umbrella and wearing a pair of large dark sunglasses (worn due to a recent eye op). You take the support where
you can get it! Team: Denise Booth, Astrid Ceelen, Pauline Walker, Linda Moore, Anne Ludford, Sandra Hewitt

A really good turnout ensured a very high standard
of golf in this premier mixed competition.
Although it was a fairly grey day, the rain held off
and the sun even came out for a short while.
Everyone managed to get round without being
soaked to the skin as has happened on several other
competition days. After a quick drink in the bar,
most members returned home to shower and
change before returning for the results and prize
giving. This was followed by yet another delicious
offering from Heather and her girls. Winners were
June Levy and her son Craig. In second place were
Denise Booth and her partner for the day, John

place was the Welsh Dragon,

Romiley Vets v Disley Vets, Friday, 22
nd June, 2012
Discussions between officials of the two teams as to whether or not the match could
go ahead were rendered superfluous when the storms which had accompanied the
southward journey of the Olympic torch hit Romiley at about 9 o’clock.
Fans of ‘Marriot’s Monologues’ may be reminded, by the recent weather, of the
wonderful ‘Three Ha’pence a Foot”
I'll tell you an old-fashioned story That Grandfather used to relate,
Of a Joiner and building contractor; 'Is name, it were Sam Oglethwaite.
In a shop on the banks of the Irwell, Old Sam used to follow 'is trade,
In a place you'll have 'eard of, called Bury ; You know, where black puddings is made.
One day, Sam were filling a knot 'ole Wi' putty, when in thro' the door
Came an old feller fair wreathed i ' whiskers; T'ould chap said "Good morning, I'm
Noah."
Sam asked Noah what was 'is business, And t'ould chap went on to remark,
That not liking the look of the weather, 'E were thinking of building an Ark….........

Mr Captain’s Prize for the Ladies, Thursday 21st June 2012
44 ladies braved the elements on Thursday 21st June and played for Mr Captain’s many prizes. Mr Captain,
Derek, unfortunately could not attend in the evening for the presentation because he had to fly off on business to
Italy, but he very kindly postponed his flight until the late afternoon so that he could meet many of the ladies at the
half way house. The reward for battling the wind and rain all the way to the 9th was a welcome glass of
champagne and, of course, Mr Captain and the cheery face of Andrew, his son, who entertained the ladies and was
very concerned that the champagne might not be cold enough!
In the evening Janet, Derek’s wife, read out a message from the Captain apologising for his absence and Janet
presented each of the winners, and Lady Captain, with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The prizes will be
presented on Sunday 15th July, Mr Captain’s weekend. We missed you Mr Captain, but, as I think you can see
below, we had a good time anyway.
The winners were:
1st Lynn Schofield with a fabulous score of 40 points (an 8 point lead and delighted to be reduced to 24 hcp);
2nd Denise Booth with 32; and 3rd Diane Houghton with 31.
The best back 9 prize was won by Lynn Nuttall 16 and front 9 Lesley Williams 17 (both on a cpo). Longest drive
at the 17th went to Denise Booth, with Beryl Reed winning nearest the pin on the 2nd and Diane Houghton (137
cms) on the 11th. Janet McRoberts won a mystery prize - not a booby prize but what it was for remains a mystery
- and Ros Hale is celebrating with her prize of champagne for driving over the dip on the 7th for the first time.

Ist Team Match v Prestbury – 26th
June 2012
This match was the return fixture following last year’s disappointing result at Romiley, when the Club lost by 4 games to 2
after the promising start of winning the first two games.
In my report last year I compared my team management to that of Arsene Wenger, only to have my hopes dashed by a
general weakness in depth.
I regret to report that this year the result was even more devastating with a crushing 5-1 loss, with only Duncan Challen and
Alan Costello managing to preserve some dignity for the Club with a win by 2 and 1. Now I know what Sir Alex Ferguson
must have felt like seeing his team of stars crushed twice by close neighbours. The only difference being that Prestbury is a
very quiet part of the world.
However all of the matches were closely fought tussles, with all but one reaching at least the 17th green, and Mr. Captain and
Mark Kitchen were aghast to see the Captain’s putt to halve their match on the last green pull up an agonizing 3 inches short
of the hole (there may have been a touch of artistic license when describing the above putt). This was after Mark had been
persuaded that he needed a full 6 iron for the 125 yards approach to the last green. They are still searching for the ball at the
far end of the practice facility.
Noel Coakley
The course at Prestbury was in superb condition and we were fortunate that the rain, which had
fallen steadily for most of the day, relented in time for the match and we remained dry.
The hospitality and catering were excellent, although Eddie Howson was a little confused. I had
left a message with his wife to remind him that the clubhouse rules at Prestbury required jacket
and tie in the dining room. However this had lost something in translation, and she had told him
we were having “jacket potato and pie” for dinner.
The Prestbury Captain, Noel Coakley, was very gracious in his welcome and we all now look
forward to returning to Romiley in 2013.
