From the President'! desk ... This month the calendar overflows with races 8S the running season really gears up ... it's time, if you haven't already done so, to shake off the winter cobwebs and hop into a race or two to see just how much of a winter respite you took . If you find that you aren ' t quite at the level you ' d like, perhaps you should join the Tuesday evening track workouts at Pittsford Mendon High School under the excellent coaching of Mike Reif. CONGRA TS are in order for those runners from the Rochester area who participated in the marathon of marathons, the I02nd running of the Basion Marathon. Once again, l'd like to remind you that we welcome your suggestions. We can ' t always implement them, but we will listen and consider everyone so keep those cards and letters running!

Sometimes through our chaotic and li'ustrating routines o/" daily life, we forget how important simple instincts relate to cycles of nature. You know the feeling of walking out of work to find the walluth of sunshinc kissing your nlcc; your car, a whirlpool of radiating heat. The question is whether to go home and plop on the couch, nipping through mindless television channels or to embrace the urge to expand your soul mentally and physically.

Faithful runners and walkers swear by results gained Irom being outdoors - it's a primeval drive to better ourselves. Because of this, the athletic shoe and clothing induslly has become a multi-billion dollar monster, introducing new lines four times a year. With thousands of choices faced by conSlUllers today, it's a wonder that anyone finds a sole mate. It's almost a given that the shoe you plll"chase this time around will not exist when you are ready for a new pair. Shoes are simply the most vital piece of equipment lur any runner or walker, yet most people are still confused about their purchases. Everyone knows the make and model o/" the car they drive, why not know the model of the shoe you've pounded for hundreds of miles? Shoe SLU'Veys, reviews and analysis seem to confnse more than enlighten. Do you trust the pierced kid at the mall to help make your decision?

Trends come and go, but the athletic industry will march on, creating hLUldreds of different choices for athletes. Look to the smaller specialty shops to help make sense of it all. You have made a lifestyle decision - a smart one - now make the right shoe selection as well. Rcmember spring is here again!

RUNNING SHOES • PART TWO

TELEPHONE 716·720-0400 FAX 716·720·0410

This is the second article in a two part series on running shoes. I recommend that you review pan one before reading on.

Picking the correct running shoe requires an understanding about your feet and the different shoes that are on the market. Since we have already discussed the different fOOl types and the different categories of shoes on the market it is time to begin our hunt for the 'right' shoe. I suggest the foUowing guidelines:

I . Buy your sneakers from a store that specializes in running shoes. I recommend shops like Jim Dalberth Sporting Goods or Medved Running & Sports Apparel. They have tested the different models and keep up to date on the latest styles and technology. They enjoy talking shop and are more than willing to lead you through the maze of shoes.

2. You can probably avoid the most expensive model and still find the right shoe for you.

3. Good sneakers only bend where your foot bends - at the base of the toes. Running shoes should no t bend in the middle of the arch.

Now lets talk shoes. Runner's World magazine prints a bi-annual edition that reviews the spring and fall shoe models. They categorize each sneaker into one of three categories - motion control, stability and cushion. Motion control shoes are ideal for those of liS who overpmnate. They control the excessive motion that occurs when the subtalar joint overpronates. These shoes contain medial forefoot posts, split rearfoot outsoles and other stabilizers to control excessive motion. I think that the Asic Gel Kayano is an ideal motion control shoe for you te inspect.

Stabililty shoes are ideal for runners who have no major foot problems. The ideal stability shoe should have a flexible forefoot and a stable rearfoot. Look for a shoe that has a board last in the heel and a slip last in the forefoot . Check out the Asic 2030 for a good example. You might also take a look at the New Balance 711 and the Brooks Vapor.

Cushion shoes are for people with high arches or who supi":ate. Runne.rs who oversupinate lack c;ushion when their heel hits the ground. A quality c ushion shoe should have the following parameters: IiIcreased forefoot and rearfoot cushioning and forefoot flexibility. Nike Air Max Triax is a perfect example of a cushioned shoe.

Use Runner's World Magazine or the shoe index in the Road Runners Sports catalog as an outline for shoe shopping. But remember, while these articles and the shoe reviews can be good guidelines, they are not the bible. You must decide for yourself which shoe is right for you. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple of hours browsing, bending, squeezing and walking in EVERY shoe on the market. Thi s is how you willieam which shoe is right for you.

He is also a national cross country ski marathon racer and has been to two world championship team trials. Questions or topics concerning fOOl medicine that yOll may wish to be covered in this newsletter can be directed La 121-C Eric Canal Drive, Rochester, New Yorl 14626.

FOOD, FUEL, and SERIOUS ATHLETES: How to prevent fati gue and heal injuries

If you are a serious athlete, you r job i s to ea t we ll so you ca n 1) en joy h i gh energy and prevent fatigue and 2) stay healthy. Here's a look at these areas i n greater detail. Boosting energy: To prevent both the daily fatigue that occurs during training and competitions, as well as the chronic fatigue that accumulates throughout the season, you need to focus on these three keys t o boos ting energy: 1) You can boost energy by eating carbohydrate-rich foods (breads, cereals, ri ce. beans , pasta, fru i t , juice, vegetables) as the foundation of your diet. Carbohydrates~ get stored in your musc les as gl ycogen. Eating too few carbohydrates «60 % of t otal calories) can result i n depleted musc l e glycogen-and that is assoc iated with fatigue .

Carbohydrate-rich meals include cereal/milk/banana/ j uice/bagels for breakfast, and lunches and dinners that include hearty bean and broth-type soups , bready sandwiches and hot meals that focus on pasta, potato, ri ce, vegetables, breads , and rolls . Juices throughout the day are an excellent carbohydrate- rich choi ce f or fluid~ .

Although carbs shou ld be the f oundati on o f your sports diet, your muscles also need adequate protein. You ca n get more than enough protein fr om your lunches and dinners (assuming they include chicken, fish, lea n meats, peanut butt er, tuna or other protein- ri ch foods). By eat i ng protein as the accompaniarnent to a carbohydrate-based meal, you'l l get the r ight balance of carbs and pro tein to bot h fue l and bui l d your muscles . 2) You can boost energy by eating substantial earbohydrate- ri ch meals throughout the day. Do not wa it until evening for your bigges t meal . Adequate daytime food ensures your muscles are well fueled and ready for act i on and your mind is well fueled and able to f ocus on t he event . Eating be fo re you exercise boosts your blood sugar and prevents the needless fatigue associated with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). 3) You can boos t energy by drinking plenty of water or other non-alcohol ic fluids to prevent dehydrati on. You should drink enough fl u ids so you have to urina t e every two to four hours . The ur i ne s hould be c lear and copious, not dark and concent r at ed with metabolic wastes. If you do not urinate, let ' s say from 9 a.m . t o 3 p.m . , you are dehydrated and need to dr ink more f luids . Optimizing Health: Your job as a serious ath lete is to eat nutr i ent -dense foods that 1) enhance your immune system (to help p rot ect your body fr om t he stress of exerc ise and a busy life) , 2) enha nce healing of the tiny i njur ies that occur during daily t raining and 3) fortify your body in c ase you expe r ience a major injury tha t requires surgery or serious hea ling .

Three keys to ea t ing for opt imal hea l t h i nc lude : 1. ~at a wholesome, hearty ca rbohydrate-ri ch breakfast such as a big bowl of cereal and a whole grain bagel. Research suggests peop l e who fuel well at breakfast t end t o eat a better (more wholes ome) l unch and have a better diet throughout the day than do people who skip o r skimp on b reakfas t . The reason is, peop le who eat too little breakfast get too hungry . When you get too hungry, you are mor e likely to eat junk fo od (donuts, chips, s o ft drinks, c andy) than wholesome breads, fruits and juices . 2. Eat abundant fruits and vegetables . When you a re eating on the run both at home and on the road , you can ea s ily fail t o consume the recommended five servings of frui t s and vegetables per day . A simple way to boost your fruit intake i s t o have a tall glass of orange j uice at breakfast, a long wi th a big banana o r other fruit on cereal, and then eat a double servi ng of co l o rful vegetables at l unch o r d i nner (such as a big sa lad or a generous portion o f coo ked vegetables) .

-20-

3. Limit your fat intake. Of all the types o f foods, fatty foods contr ibute to the biggest health and performance problems because t hey 1) fil l your stomach but leave your muscles unfueled , 2 ) contribute to clogged arteries and heart disease, and 3) are calori e - dense and, in excess, can easi ly contr ibute to weight gain. Your best bet is to eat onl y small portions of fatty foods, or choose lowfat alternatives. For example, choose more thick-crust pizza with vegetable toppings and less thin - crust pizza topped with pepperoni a nd extra cheese: more bean burritos and fewer burgers; more spaghetti dinners and less cheesy lasagna ; more frozen yogurt and less i c e cream . The Game Pl an : Fueling well f or sports t akes some planning, but is not hard to do if you do not get t oo hungry . Athletes who plan poorly , skip meals, and get too hungry tend to eat mo re junk f ood and suf fer the consequences of a poor sports diet: chronic fatigue and reduced health.

Your best bet to enhanc e the nutritional value of your diet .is to pack in your sports bag a supply of non- perishable, carbohydrate-rich foods so you'll always have nourishing food options readily available. Popu lar sports foods t hat trave l well include: juice boxes, pretzel rods, raisins and dr i ed fruit s, trail mix, energy bars , granola bars , and even fig newtons or pop tarts. At the last minute, add some perishable items, such as bagels , yogurt, apples, and sandwiches. (Carrying a small cooler can be helpful.)

Clearl y, you have to organize time to shop f o r and pack the food, but the effort will be rewarded . You wil l always win with good nutrition! GRTC Board Meeting Notes April 14, 1998

Treasurer stacey VanDenburgh* ............ .......• • •••. .. .. Recording Secretary Lua nn weinste in* ... ... . .. ....... . . . .... . .. . .... Hernbership Secreta r y

Board o f Directors: Phil Ashley~, Li sa Bower, Kessler*, Charl ie McMullen, Tim McMullen , Sue Brian Sears+, Karen Suitor*, George Tillson, Withrow. Guests : Rick Francis*

John Hult z ~, Kris Oliver~, Terry Robbins,

Pete VanPeursem· , Dick

Agenda The minute's were read fo r the mee ting he l d on March 10, 1998 and approved. The Recording Secretary apol ogizes f o r sending t he wrong minutes for inclusion in last month 1 s news l etter .

There was no Treasurer's r eport this month, probably because Rick, a CPA, was busy doing taxes.

Bill Kehoe has organized a new Lilac race. The Montana Mil ls Lilac 10K will be run on Sunday , May 24 at 10 : 00 a .m. in Genesee Valley Park. Registration will be at the Round House. You can a lso pre - r.egister at any Mon tana Mills bakery.

LuAnn Weinstein reported that the meffiLership was up to 497 i n March, bu t back down to 470 as o f April 15. The Genesee Valley Ha rriers, Cats AC and RATs seemed encouraged by t he offer of one free page in the newsletter for a three month trial period. Hopefully this cooperative effort will increase our membership.

The Spring Track Workout wi th coach Mike Reif at Pitt sford Mendon High School is set to run for 9 consecutive Tuesdays beginning April 21, 1998. This workout is of fered free to GRTC members .

Bob Dyjak wanted to discuss guidelines for the election of peop l e to the Hall of Fame. GRTC has not elected anyone in quite a while. The Board discussed our next Annual Meeting/Banquet as a po tent i al fundraiser that would sponsor interesting speakers and possibly a raffl e. It was agree d it would be good if the banquet could be a pre or post race event .

GRTC members are encouraged to submi t a r tic l es and photographs to the newsletter. Terry Robbins, our newsle tter editor, decides what to publis h in a given issue. Should you want some special decora ti ve effect, like a border around a photograph, t ry to do t hi s yourself to help Terry out.

The Board discussed the sponsoring of members t o represent the GRTC at running events. Usually, these requests are cons i dered on a cas e by case basis. This decisi on i s also based upon the state of t he club ' s ban k account.

Next Meeting : Tuesday, May 12, 7: 00 pm, at the Mid-Town Tennis Club. Minutes s ubmitted by Stacey VanDenburgh, 4/29/98.
