Romanticism challenged the neo classical emulation of classical
literature and valuing of order, reason,
balance and restraint. Romanticism privileged:
the imagination, subjective experience, the individual and
innovation every day language and individual styles humanity,
especially childhood. Virtue was corrupted by society nature
distinguished by mystical or sublime qualities was the antithesis
of materialism the individual self , self analysis, individual
expression of emotions, inner self isolated, alienated and
unappreciated poet, hero or heroine freedom of spirit including
Gothics privileging of the grotesque, violence ,decay, the
supernatural
