Romans Part 2
Lesson 6
Romans 6
Romans 6
Believers died to sin
Believers are freed from slavery to
sin and become slaves to God and
righteousness, which results in
sanctification and eternal life.
Romans 7
The righteous, or believers, are dead to the Law; they are freed from it.
Chapter 7 is about the Law and the believer’s relationship to it.
Questions asked and answered: Is the Law sin? Did the good Law become the cause of sin
for me?
The Law
Sin caused my death through the good Law The Law is spiritual. I am flesh. Nothing good dwells in the flesh. Who will set me free from this body of death?
Jesus Christ will; not the Law
Romans 8:1-17
The law of the Spirit of life in Christ sets believers free from the law of sin and death.
The Law could not give life: Only Christ could do that.
The requirement of the Law is fulfilled in those who walk according to the Spirit.
The New Covenant
Jeremiah 31:31-34 God said He would put His law within and
write it on the heart God said He would be their God and they
would be His people God said He would forgive their iniquity and
remember their sins no more.
The New Covenant
Jeremiah 32:38-41 Singleness of heart and action They will fear God always and not turn away
from Him It is an everlasting Covenant God will not turn away from them
The New Covenant
Ezekiel 36:22-27 God promised to cleanse Israel when He
gathered them from the nations and back to their own land
God promised a new heart and a new spirit He will put His Spirit within and cause us to
walk in His statutes.
The New Covenant
Hebrews 9 – 10 Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant His death was for redemption of
transgressions made under the first covenant, the Law
The Law was a shadow of good to come He took away the first to establish the second
The New Covenant
2 Corinthians 3:1-18 We are servants of the New Covenant, of the
Spirit The Spirit gives life! Ministry of the Spirit is serving God Not like the old, with a veil over the hearts of
the unbelieving. Where the Spirit is, there is liberty-freedom
Romans 6-8
What does the life of the righteous look like? They died to sin being their master They’re free from sin. They died to the Law being their master They’re free from the Law The Lord is their master and they serve in
newness of life, through the Spirit.
I John 3: 4-10
Sin is lawlessness Jesus appeared to take away sins No one who practices sin knows Him The one who practices righteousness is righteous The one who practices sin is of the devil. No practicing of righteousness? Not God’s God’s children and the devil’s children are obvious
Galatians 5:16-21
Walk by the Spirit and you will not give the flesh its desires
The flesh and the Spirit are in opposition Those who are part of the New Covenant are
caused by the Spirit to walk in His ways Practice the deeds of the flesh? No
inheritance in God’s kingdom
Interpretation of Romans 7
Is Paul’s state – regenerate or unregenerate – the issue?
No: The main point is the Law Illustration: marriage Illustration: coveting Illustration: “I” Main point: The Law didn’t cause death Sin in the flesh caused death
Paul’s personal testimony
Blameless according to the Law – he kept it as a good Pharisee.
His confidence was in the flesh – keeping the Law
Paul used himself as an illustration of any person living according to the flesh, sold into bondage to sin.
Practicing evil, needs to be set free
Conclusion
Never make the obscure interpret the obvious
Scripture never contradicts Scripture We may not always understand what it
means. We only understand what it cannot mean because of what other passages clearly say
We cannot live in sin and be saved
