Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The rectory attic was a museum of sorts, filled with boxes long abandoned by some of the previous residents. Suffering from snow-induced cabin fever, the pastor decided it was time to clean it out. An afternoon chore turned into a treasure hunt adventure as we discovered old books, art and other smaller artifacts of days gone by. Many items brought a laugh and a story as its history or its owner was recalled. God hides treasures in life just to keep our attention and interest. Amazing sunsets, funny quirks in nature and in people, a child’s newest discovery or an older person’s tale of yesteryear reveal the creative power of God at work. It calls us to see life from God’s perspective, to marvel at his genius and to offer thanks for such beauty and wisdom and grace. The reign of God manifests itself in detail great and small, so that we are drawn to him and his loving, creating, renewing power. We can create our own treasures because God shares his power and his will with us. God gives us the ability to participate in his creative love. We create new life, produce great words of art, compose beautiful music, and bring order to life around us. Most importantly, we share the treasure of faith in Jesus and the hope of eternal life. It is a story and a gift that is priceless!

The Pastor’s Page July 24, 2005 “LOOK FOR LOVE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES…”

I have been spending a lot of time lately thinking about all the different ways that people get excited about seeing an example of the Divine in their day to day lives. Earlier this year we read in the newspapers about something that looked like an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a viaduct in Chicago. It was apparently caused by dripping water and last winter’s ice melt. We have read about someone who sold a tortilla over the internet that had the face of Mary on it. Potatoes and potato chips in the guise of Jesus, driftwood shaped like a saint, and other items have caught our attention over the years. Not only have they caught our attention; but, for some people, more than attention has been caught. These things have been treated with an almost fanatical air by some. I read in The Times last week (in the anonymous input section) that someone was berating the mayor for shutting off the light and, thus, keeping Jesus from being viewed. Good Lord! Do you really think that God could be controlled by the flip of a switch? Turn on the lights: there’s Jesus. Turn ‘em off: there He goes. Come on . . . get real. God does not need a streetlight to manifest Himself. Sadly, many of the people who search for God in all the grandiose ways fail to miss an important point: we already have Him! Instead of combing the world over looking for something that might pertain to God, save yourself the trouble and come to church. After all, the very Body of Jesus is in the tabernacle. We call that the Real Presence. Since we believe that the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ at the consecration of the Mass, we know that Jesus is here. No need looking for that elusive piece of driftwood, or that tortilla, or that shadow in the trees. Not only is Jesus in the church in the tabernacle, but He is also in His Church: the people who believe in Him. All one has to do is visit the sick in the hospital or visit the shut-in in the nursing home or at their houses to encounter the Lord. How many times our ministers who go on visits claim that they got so much out of their visits because they encountered the divine in the people they met. God is very present in the sorrowing as well. Make a point to visit people in funeral homes or go to the funeral Mass (and even sing in the funeral choir) and you will experience the God who wishes to bring peace and consolation to His people. No need to look in bizarre places — Christ is present here!

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: July 25: Msgr. Michael A. Campagna (1979) July 30: Deacon Walter Stone (1978)

GOOD NEWS FOR HIM — BAD NEWS FOR US Well, I guess “all good things must come to an end” is a relatively appropriate saying for this moment. Many of you have enjoyed listening to our organist/accompanist, Mr. John Clodig, over the years. Last week, John notified me that he had accepted the position of Director of Music Ministry at a parish in Glenwood, Illinois. We wish John the best of luck as he prepares for his new ministry. We know that he brings a lot of talent with him to that position. At the same time, we are in need of one or a few parishioners to step forward to be an accompanist at some of our weekend Masses. If you are interested and can help us out, please contact Ms. Angie Lorandos, our Director of Music Ministry so that she can meet with you and discuss specifics. Hoping to hear from some of you!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house, a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter. Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one. As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong. Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two men from the gas company running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd better run, too!"

CONGRATULATIONS TO ONE OF OUR OWN One of our parishioners, Mr. Chet Nordyke, has been chosen to be the principal at Marquette High School in Michigan City. As you may (or may not) know, the Diocese of Gary runs three high schools: Bishop Noll in Hammond, Andrean in Merrillville, and Marquette in Michigan City. In addition to his duties as the new principal at Marquette High School, Mr. Nordyke will remain as the principal at Queen of All Saints Grade School, also located in Michigan City. Mr. Nordyke spent 15 years working with our parish’s religious education program before going to Marist High School in Illinois for another 15 years. After that, he went to Queen of All Saints in Michigan City where he has been the principal for several years now. Congratulations on your selection as Marquette’s principal, Mr. Nordyke, and best of luck to you as you prepare to do double-duty for the people of Michigan City.

IT'S OURS!

As children, we are born selfish. The first words most children learn after Mommy and Daddy are me and mine. As followers of the way of Jesus, we learn to share and to do good. Through our stewardship - the giving of our time, talents, treasure and prayer -- we break this guise of selfishness. Me and mine become ours. We work to do God's work in the world.

Thank you for your generous gifts today to do God's work.
