Adult Christian Initiation If you are interested in exploring the Catholic faith or completing your initiation into the Church please call the Parish Center.
Infant Baptism Preparation If you wish to arrange a baptism at Sacred Heart Church, please
contact the Parish Center at 516-379-1356 ext.10. One of our baptism coordinators will be happy to arrange a time to meet with you. Ideally, both Godparents should be practicing Catholics. We will review the procedures for the sacrament and you will be able to fill out all the necessary paperwork. Baptisms are held on the first and third Sunday of each month at 2pm in the church. First time parents need to attend a baptism class. They are held on the last Monday of each month in the church at 7:30pm. Crying babies welcome! Godparents are encouraged but not required to attend.
Sacrament of Matrimony Please contact the Parish Center at least one year in advance of the
intended date of the wedding. A priest of the parish will interview you, set the wedding date and help you register for the required marriage preparation program (Pre-Cana).
Sacrament of Reconciliation A priest is available each Saturday at 4:00PM in the church.
Please don’t hesitate to call a priest at the Parish Center for an appointment for Confession at another time.
Sacraments for the Homebound If you or a family member are not able to attend Mass due
to temporary or chronic illness, and would like to receive the Sacraments of Communion, Reconciliation and/or Anointing of the Sick, please call the Parish Center.

Prayers for the Sick In an effort to make sure parishioners who are ill are properly prayed for we would like to keep
our Sick List as up to date as possible. Names will remain for one full month, but will be
removed at the end of every month, unless there is a request by the family to extend the
prayers for the next month.

Meat the Need Monday is June 29th, 2020 The Pantry is open Monday through Thursday 10 am-1:30 pm. We are always in need of meat, bread, milk, eggs, butter and fresh produce. If you are able to donate these items, please bring them on Meat the Need Monday or any time during our business hours. Please call 379-6123 to make other arrangements, if need be.

For health reasons, the missalettes have been removed from the church. We do have some available for you to keep. There are worship aids with readings and hymns available to you as you enter the church. We ask that you take one and dispose of it at home. Gospel Reading Matthew 10:37-42 Jesus outlines the costs and rewards of discipleship.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Today’s Gospel is the conclusion of the instructions and consolations that we have heard Jesus offering to his disciples during the past few weeks. In this passage, Jesus summarizes both the costs of discipleship and its rewards. Once again our understanding of the Gospel is strengthened by considering the context in which it was written and the perspective of Matthew’s audience.
The conditions of discipleship outlined in Matthew’s Gospel may appear harsh. Yet they underline for us a truth—choosing anything with one’s whole heart has consequences. Choosing life with Christ means that every relationship we have must be understood from a new perspective. For many in Matthew’s community, this choice brought division to their family.
Matthew also outlines the reward of hospitality offered to Jesus’ followers. In today’s Gospel, Jesus explains the difficulties of discipleship, yet reveals that those who welcome the disciples have also welcomed him.
Today’s Gospel also highlights for us the importance of hospitality in the Christian life. To welcome another in Jesus’ name is to extend hospitality to Jesus himself. We have many opportunities in our daily life to reach out to others, to be a welcoming presence and a sign of God’s love.
