Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 12, 2020
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Magdalen de Pazzi exists to echo Jesus’ call to all, “Come and follow me.”
Our Mission Statement: We embrace the Way of Life of being good stewards of the gifts of time, talent, and treasure, which have been given to us by God and to whom we respond with generosity.
Dear Parish Family, Ultimately there are two things to which we’re called —to holiness and mission, to be a faithful disciple and an ardent apostle — and in today’s parable, Jesus helps us to understand both better, instructing us how to be a fruitful follower and an effective evangelist, how to hear God’s word well and proclaim it well, how to receive God’s grace and how to live in accordance with it. In the Parable of the Sower, the Seed and the Soil, Jesus tells us that good soil produces fruit, and not just a little fruit, but abundant fruit: 30, 60 or 100 fold, all huge numbers according to the Jewish mentality of the age. Do we listen to God’s word with the intention to bear great fruit? Do we respond to God’s work in our lives with an openness and a desire to do something great for him? Just as a sower would scatter seed over all four types of earth, so Jesus scatters his word, his grace, his saving deeds over all four kinds of people represented by the respective soil samples. We see all four soil types among his first listeners. The big question is how we’re going to listen: whether we’re truly going to hear with our ears and be converted, whether we’re going to receive what he teaches on good soil and allow that word to bear abundant fruit in our lives, or whether we’re going to receive what he says on the three types of soil that end up bearing little or no fruit at all. The Bishop was very clear that the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass will remain in effect until further notice. It is not a sin, in any way to not attend Mass especially if you are elderly or have underlining conditions where it is necessary for you to keep the Stay at Home Orders. The decision regarding whether to attend Mass is left to the individual. If you or someone in your household is ill, especially with a fever or flu like symptoms please do not enter the Church.
We will continue to live stream the daily Masses and the Sunday 9:00 am & 1:30 pm Spanish Masses for those that are unable to attend in person. We have also started having public weekday Mass at 8:00 am.
When you come to Mass, everyone will enter through the main doors, our Knights of Columbus members will be there to greet you and seat you in assigned seats. We have mapped out the Church taking in to consideration social distancing, and the limited capacity we are required to follow and have come up with a floor plan that we will use. It is this reason that you will be escorted to your seat by the Knights. Please note that you might not be able to sit where you normally prefer because of this reason. Once the Church is at capacity, we will have a limited number of standing room only in the Narthex. We have taken all precautions to follow the guidelines set by the State and Diocese in order to keep everyone safe.
Please remember that you will need a face mask to enter the Church. We also ask that if you can to bring your own sanitizer or to use the dispensers that we have provided in the Narthex and the Church. Our collection baskets have been placed in the back of the Church so that you may drop your envelope as you leave.
You will also notice that the missals and music hymnals have been removed this is to help with keeping sur-faces clean, if you wish to follow along with the Mass each week we will have the readings and songs on our website that you can print and bring to Church with you, If you chose to do this, please do not leave the papers in the pews. Our bathrooms will be closed until further notice. We ask that you remember to social distance at all times including entering and exiting the Church, do not shake hands or congregate to socialize before or after Masses in order to keep the social distancing require-ments from the State of NJ. Please also note that to help with social distancing the priests and deacons will not be in the Narthex after Masses to greet the parishioners. Eucharistic Adoration is also available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm . Please remember that we are to follow social distancing while in the Church. Our priests are available to hear confessions, from 3:45 - 4:45 pm Saturday in the old Chapel.
I want to thank our parishioners who are currently contributing through our auto offertory program as well as those who continue to send in their donations by mail. On our web page we have set up ways to donate either electronically or by text. These donations and our regular envelope system make a real difference for St. Mag-dalen de Pazzi, especially now. Your gift to St. Magdalen’s and any extra sacrifice during these difficult days are most needed and appreciated. Know of my prayers for you and please keep me in your prayers. Stay well and safe.

Novena to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel July 7th-15th
Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - July 16th
Join us at the 8:00 am Mass as we pray the Novena to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
In the 13th century, during the Crusades, St. Simon Stock joined a group of hermits on Mount Carmel dur-ing a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1247, he was elected the 6th superior-general of the Carmelites at the first chapter held in Aylesford, England. However, the order had difficulty gaining general acceptance and suffered much persecution and oppression from secular clergy and other orders which prompted the monks to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin in the year 1251.
On Sunday July 16th, 1251, as Simon Stock knelt in prayer, Our Lady appeared to him, holding the Child Jesus in one arm and the Brown Scapular in the other. She uttered the following words: “Hoc erit tibi et cunctis Carmelitis privilegium, in hoc habitu moriens salvabitur” (This shall be the privilege for you and for all the Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall be saved).
Prayer of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire
to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come,
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated
from You. Amen.

Eucharistic Adoration:
How "active participation" can be something other than what you're thinking.by Katrina Fernandez
Hello, Katrina. My question for you is about actively participating at Mass. Is it still considered “participating” if I can’t fully concentrate on the readings or the homily? My two daughters are 3 and 8 months and I’m usually pretty distracted with making sure they don’t get too loud and fussy and disturb others around us. Some Sundays I completely miss all the readings and even the homily. I wonder if I should just wait until they’re older to come to Mass so that I can concentrate and actually participate. Is it considered participating at Mass if I am barely mentally present?
Yes, you’re still participating in the Mass! In fact, I would even argue that some “participation” starts the minute you wake up and make the decision to attend Mass. I remember the level of determination and will it required just to get out of the house with a small child, never mind the sheer Olympic feat required to even find a moment to shower, dress, and pack a diaper bag.
I think the confusion lies in the meaning behind the phrase “active participation.” If you think it only means being able to say all the responses, sing along to all the hymns, and attentively listen to all the readings and homilies without once letting your mind wander, then I can see where that would lead to frustration and disappointment, perhaps even feeling like you failed at being present.
This term, “active participation,” came from Pope St. Pius X at the turn of the 20th century. Then it was brought into the teaching on liturgy from Vatican II:
Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy.
But actively participating doesn’t just mean external action, like gestures and responses. It also refers to interior participation. Coming to Mass with the intention of being present, to the best of your ability, is an act of participation. As a mother your primary duty is to your children and attending to their needs. If their needs happen to require your attention in the middle of Mass, that doesn’t negate your presence there. Even if you spend the entire Mass chasing a hyper toddler around the narthex while nursing an infant, and all you can spare is 30 seconds acknowledging the mystery unfolding before you, you are participating. Your intention and interior desire is to be present, so be present to the best of your ability in the small seconds you are given.
“But in order that the liturgy may be able to produce its full effects, it is necessary that the faithful come to it with proper dispositions, that their minds should be attuned to their voices, and that they should cooperate with divine grace lest they re-ceive it in vain [28] .” SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM
Active participation can also refer to the disposition with which we enter into the liturgy as well. Do we chose to come be-grudgingly to Mass with a “why bother” attitude? Or with an attitude of gratitude for whatever little nugget of the liturgy we might happen to absorb in the midst of the mothering chaos? Do we gratefully attend to the duties of motherhood or resent the attention our children require from us because it’s a distraction?
Your commitment to take your family to Mass is an act of prayer in itself and a work that merits the effort, so please don’t ever stop taking them to Mass.
In the meantime, don’t make Sunday Mass your only moment to try to connect with the Lord. Consider spending whatever brief moments you can spare throughout the entire week with Him — try reading the daily Mass readings in the morning or evening after your girls have gone to bed, pray while doing chores, sing hymns with your daughters, pray the Rosary at the park, or maybe ask your husband or a family member to take over so you can spend an hour at adoration.
Be encouraged that, by your example and commitment, your daughters will learn the importance of regularly attending Mass. Find strength and peace in knowing that God is pleased with your efforts, however distracted they may be.

Stewardship Corner
“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” (Matthew 13:22)
Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in earthly activities that you have no time for God? Gratitude and generosity are virtues that we should strive to do on a daily basis. Every decision we make either takes us one step closer to God or one step further away. What we re-ceive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week as well.

CARES Act
Did you know the CARES Act can help our local Church? By providing key tax incentives for donors to non-profit organizations,
the new legislation may encourage you to consider a financial gift to your parish, the Diocese of Metuchen or one of its entities.
• What is the CARES Act?
On Friday, March 27, Congress passed and the President signed into law the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. This is a $2 trillion economic stimulus package leg-islated to provide immediate relief for nonprofits, businesses, individuals and state and local
governments.
• How does the CARES Act benefit donors to nonprofit organizations? The CARES Act incentivizes charitable giving from individuals and corporations by increasing
tax deductions for charitable donations.
• What are individual donor benefits? All taxpayers (both those who itemize and those who use standard deduction) can deduct up to
$300 of total charitable contributions in 2020. Prior to the CARES Act, those who use standard deduction could not deduct any charitable giving.
• What are the additional benefits for those who itemize their taxes?
The law lifts the existing cap on annual contributions for those who itemize their taxes, signifi-cantly raising it from 60% of adjusted gross income to 100% of adjusted gross income.
• What are charitable giving incentives for corporations?
The CARES Act raises the annual limit of charitable giving that corporations can deduct from 10% of taxable income to 25% of taxable income. Food donations from corporations are raised from 15% of taxable income to 25% of taxable income.
