MISSION STATEMENT

As members of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Parish we are committed to assisting our members in

both the spiritual and temporal needs of life. We are a parish with heart

who are committed to “Let all things be done with Charity”

and show we are disciples of Christ by our love for one another.

Scriptural Reflection for the Week “And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a man-ger.” (see Luke 2:1-14) It is there for your eyes to see when you come to church; it is there under the tree perhaps when you return home; it may be on your lawn or that of your neighbor; it may be in a park or other designated place in your community—that is the Manger; the Nativity Scene with Jesus, Mary and Joseph with the shepherds, the animals, angels and Kings. It is there for us to see but is it in us for people to see - is there room for the Christ Child and Mary and Joseph in our hearts? If not, it’s because we did not ask and pray for them to be! Say this Prayer before a Nativity Scene:

“Heavenly Father, with what warm love and affection we gaze at your gift to us; your gift of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Jesus, your Son and Mary and Joseph, your servants. Bless our family this Christmas of 2016. May we have the peace of heaven brought to earth this Holy Night in our hearts and home. JESUS - our Saviour - heal us! MARY - our Mother - embrace and kiss us! JOSEPH - our Protector - show us the Way! May the HOLY FAMILY of NAZARETH be our refuge and strength all the days of our lives. AMEN. Feast of the Holy Family is this Friday, December 30th. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 8:30am to 9pm at Saint Catherine of Sienna. Your Christmas Gift to Your Church In addition to your weekly Sunday offering please remember to offer a special Christmas gift to your Parish this Sunday. Please place both the De-cember 25th and the special Christmas envelope in the one collection. Thank you for your understand-ing of our need at this time of year. January 1,2017 is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. The usual weekend Mass Schedule will be in effect.

One Final Thought “The coming of Jesus at Bethlehem brought joy to the world and to every human heart. May His coming this Christmas bring to each one of us that peace and joy that he desires to give.” — Saint Teresa of Calcutta

St. Vincent de Paul Society & Parish Social Ministry (Outreach)

Merry Christmas to all, especially to all those who contributed to the angel tree and brought food for the food pantry. We were able to provide 114 Christmas baskets to members of our community. As you know last Saturday was a snowy and miserable day, but fourteen people came to deliver the baskets. (We usu-ally have many more.) They went above and beyond in making as many as six trips carrying four of five baskets each time. They made Christmas merrier for many families. There is no way that we can really thank them, but if you can say a prayer for their well being in 2017. Members of our parish do so much for others all year long. They make our much better place. They live their faith in so many ways.

We wish everyone a happy and holy Christmas and a New Year filled with many joys. As always we will be happy to receive all non-perishable food items. Thank you for all you do.

CHRISTMAS

By Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca

C.S. Lewis called the incarnation "the Grand Miracle." He wrote: "The central miracle asserted by Christians is the Incarnation .... Every other miracle prepares for this, or exhibits this, or results from this .... It was the central event in the history of the Earth—the very thing that the whole story has been about. By a miracle that passes human comprehension, the Creator entered his creation, the Eternal entered time, God became human—in order to die and rise again for the salvation of all people. "He comes down; down from the heights of absolute being into time and space, down into humanity; down further still ... [to] the womb ... down to the very roots and sea-bed of the Nature He has created. But He goes down to come up again and bring the whole ruined world up with Him." (Miracles, Chapter 14).

The greatest miracle of all is that incomprehensible act by which God became man, and was born to a young Jewish girl named Mary in a stable in Bethlehem.

Three of the four Gospels begin their record of Jesus' work by emphasizing the wonder of His incarnation. Matthew records how Jesus was miraculously conceived in the womb of Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit, and that He was "God with us." Luke made it clear that Jesus was the Son of God. John described how the Eternal Word, who is God, had become flesh as Jesus Christ to dwell among us.

The real surprise is that some Christians take so little notice of this greatest of all miracles. A spirit of commercialism has be-come attached to the Christmas season. Disturbed by these things, some avoid the festival. But too often, they also forget to dedicate time to think about the message Christmas was intended to remind us of: the message of God's greatest miracle. What a pity that, as a result, some forgot to rejoice in this greatest of all miracles, the birth of Jesus.

Let us not miss the opportunity to celebrate the great miracle: to come in wonder and worship before the One who humbled Himself to become a baby, a child, a human; who descended into His own creation so that by ascending again He might lift it up with Him from decay and bondage into glory and freedom.

In a world where life is so threatened, let us make this Christmas a great reminder of the beauty and sacredness of Christ's birth. How closely at His coming did Jesus bind Himself to our human nature, as well as to the earth. Remembering the poor shepherds and the circumstances of Christ's birth, so marked by poverty, let us make them reminders of the forgotten poor of our world. Let the Child Jesus and with Joseph and Mary teach us the dignity and importance of children, families and individuals in a society so neglectful of them.

MAY YOU HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS
