VINCENT DE PAUL In today’s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent a “messenger on ahead of Him.” To be the messengers of God, we must know well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to bring his love to others. In the month of June, you were the “messenger of God” in bring-ing hope to the poor. Your gifts enabled the Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul to assist families in need in many ways.

13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 30, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, This Saturday, June 29th, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Very little historical data is available concerning their deaths, and much of what has been written over the centuries is embellished allegory and myth. It’s likely that Peter and Paul died some years apart, but this day has been pre-served as a reminder of their martyrdom in Rome. Theologically, we know quite a bit about Peter and Paul. The Gospels are replete with stories about Pe-ter, and the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles of Peter give us even more information. The mission-ary journeys of St. Paul are chronicled in the Acts of the Apostles, and we have Paul’s letters. There are 14 Pauline letters in the New Testament, and scrip-ture scholars believe that Paul wrote at least seven of them himself. What makes the lives of Saints Pe-ter and Paul so interesting to us is the fact that they were flawed human beings. Jesus called two very sinful people to build his church upon, and through their fidelity to God’s call they became two of the Church’s greatest saints. Peter walked on water in faith, but eventually sank in doubt. Peter refused to let Jesus wash his feet at the Last Supper, but then asked for his whole body to be cleansed. Peter swears at the Last Supper that he will never deny Jesus, and swears to a servant maid that he never knew Jesus. Peter objected to the idea of a suffering Messiah to the point where Jesus told Peter, “Get behind me Satan! You are an obsta-cle to me.” Paul also experienced a checkered past before turning saintly. Paul started out as an ex-tremely zealous Jewish Pharisee. His fervor in fol-lowing and enforcing “the Law” led to his persecu-tion of the early Christians, and Sacred Scripture documents Paul standing by and watching while St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death. Paul had a conversion experience on the road to Damascus where he encountered the Risen Lord, and from that point forward Paul became the most ardent defender of the Catholic Faith. If both Saint Peter and Saint Paul can start out as sin-ners and become saints, we too, through the grace of God, can do the same. Have a blessed week. Father Joe

FR. ISIDORE’S ANNIVERSARY Please wish Father Isidore a happy anniversary this weekend. He will celebrate his 29th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood this coming Mon-day. Father Isidore was one of seven men ordained on July 1, 1990 by the Most Reverend Amadeus Msarakie at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Kili-manjaro, Tanzania. Father Isidore was first sent to Kenya to work among the Maasai people. In 2000, he was sent to the Diocese of Cleveland, and we have been very blessed to have him minister at Our Lady of Hope and Saint Mary.

BOOK OF PERSONAL PRAYER INTENTIONS St. Mary will have a book of prayer intentions that will be placed at the back of the church on a lectern. Parishioners are welcome to write their personal in-tentions in this book and leave them before the Lord. You can remain anonymous or sign your name if you like. The rosary group will pray for the inten-tions, and they will be prayed for during the inten-tions at all Masses.

SCATTERED SEED MASS You are all invited to attend the annual Scattered Seed Mass on Sunday, July 14th at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 4341 East 131st Street in Garfield Heights. Scattered Seed continues to honor the memory and community of Epiphany Church, St. Cecilia, and other city churches closed in years past, commemorate the lasting love of Father Dan Begin, and join together in gratitude and worship. Father Isidore Munishi will be the celebrant!

LIGHT OF HEARTS VILLA Light of Hearts will be presenting “With Jesus at the Beach” on July 3rd, 10th and 17th from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. July 3rd’s topic will be Jesus Calls the First Disciples by the Shore. July 10th’s topic will be Jesus Feeds 5000 and Walks on Water. On July 17th the topic will be Jesus Fixes Breakfast for the Fish-ermen. Please plan on attending!
