Tolerances on cutting and bending dimensionsThe tolerances for cutting and/or bending dimensions shall be in accordancewith Table 5 and shall be taken into account when completing the schedule. The end anchorage or the dimension in parentheses in the shape codesspecified in Table 3 shall be used to allow for any permissible deviationsresulting from cutting and bending.

25 or 0.5% of the length
(whichever is greater)
Radius of bendingReinforcement to be formed to a radius exceeding that specified in Table 5 shallbe supplied straight.
NOTE 1 The required curvature may be obtained during placing.
NOTE 2 For shapes with straight and curved lengths (e.g. shape code 12, 13,22 and 33) the largest practical radius for the production of a continuous curveis 200 mm, and for larger radii the curve may be produced by a series of shortstraight sections
Table 6 Maximum limit for which a preformed radius is required
(Continued)
The length of straight between two bends shall be at least 4d, see figure 6.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 should be used in the interpretation of bending dimensions.
NOTE 1 The length equations for shape codes 14, 15, 25, 26, 27, 34, 36, and 46 areapproximate and where the bend angle is greater than 45º, the length should becalculated more accurately allowing for the difference between the specified overalldimensions and the true length measured along the central axis of the bar. When thebending angles approach 90º, it is preferable to specify shape code 99 with a fullydimensional sketch.
NOTE 2 Five bends or more might be impractical within permitted tolerances.
NOTE 3 For shapes with straight and curved lengths (e.g. shape codes 12, 13, 22, 23and 47) the largest practical mandrel size for the production of a continuous curve is400mm. See also Clause 10.

See Note 2.
The values for minimum radius and end projection, r and P respectively, as specified inTable 2, shall apply to all shape codes (see 7.6).
The dimensions in parenthesis are the free dimensions. If a shape given in this tableis required but a different dimension is to allow for the possible deviations, the shapeshall be drawn out and given the shape code 99 and the free dimension shall beindicated in parenthesis. (Continued on following page)
All other shapes where standard shapescannot be used.
No other shape code number, form ofdesignation or abbreviation shall be usedin scheduling.
A dimensional sketch shall be drawn overthe dimension columns A to E. Everydimension shall be specified and thedimension that is to allow for permissibledeviations shall be indicated inparenthesis, otherwise the fabricator isfree to choose which dimensions shallallow for tolerance.

Reinforcement ConnectionThe Startabox® System
14 www.rom.co.uk
The Startabox® System is a quick and safe way of achieving high quality reinforcementconnections in a structural concrete joint without formwork damage. It consists of speciallyselected high yield reinforcement steel conforming to BS4449 housed in a perforated casewith a tear-off plastic cover which protects the reinforcement until it is required for use.
Speed Startabox® is quickly nailed into the formwork. There is no need for time-consuming drilling and cuttingof the formwork. The formwork can be easily struck and re-erected thereby reducing intervals between pours.
Safe The steel starter bars are housed within their case until ready for use. There are no protruding barswhich may corrode or become damaged and present a hazard to workmen.
Cost The formwork suffers no damage and therefore may be re-used many times. This contrasts withnormal stop-ends which only offer one use.
Quality Traditional stop-ends offer suffer grout loss. Startabox® is nailed to plain formwork and does notsuffer the same problem. This means that Startabox® will deliver a high quality construction joint every time.
Site ‘Take off’ and scheduling service available
N.B. The Type 11 case with 16mm bars is produced with single bars only. Casescontaining 8,10 and 12mm bars supplied 30mm deep. Cases containing 16mm barsupplied 50mm deep with steel lids for greater rigidity.
Re-bending tools available from stock. 8-10mm bar, order re-bending tool 1. For 12 to 16mm bar, order re-bending tool 2.

Curved STARTABOXSTARTABOX® can be manufactured to a customers desired internal or external radius. A typical situation would be the use of STARTABOX® in the construction of launder channelsin round tanks in the water treatment industry.
STARTABOX with Integral Waterstop (STARTASTOP)STARTABOX® can be manufactured incorporating a hydrophilic waterstop strip on both theinternal and external face of the casing. This is especially useful for construction joints inbelow ground situations or within water retaining structures. The hydrophilic strip used ispassed for use in potable water situations.
STARTABOX Coupler CombinationsWhere reinforcement bar diameters or congestion of reinforcement bar restricts the use ofSTARTABOX®, RFA manufacture and supply a reinforcement bar coupler system. RFA candetail these couplers in conjunction with STARTABOX® and can even include them in thesame joint detail.
STARTABOX Cross Wall ConnectionWhere two walls bisect each other STARTABOX® can be manufactured to accommodate thepull out bars for both faces of a wall in one single strip. This ensures the reinforcement runscontinuously through the bisecting wall.

Steel Kickers are used in kickerless construction of wallseliminating the need for a concrete kicker and saving
time in the construction cycle. The pressed steel leg ofthe ‘T’ shaped kicker is simply pushed into the wet
concrete slab along the appropriate centre line of theproposed wall. Once set in position the adjustable
horizontal bar forming the ‘T’ can be moved from sideto side until the correct position is obtained. Once
positioned, the horizontal bar can be tapped with ahammer to wedge it into the vertical slots on the leg.
