VIKINGS

Bloodthirsty plunderers. Pillaging warriors. Seafaring traders. What do we really know about Vikings? Offering a fresh look at the Viking Age, this exhibition opens an extraordinary window into the daily lives of these legendary explorers, artisans, and warriors. Opens November 4, 2017.

ROM.ON.CA/VIKINGS #VikingsTOThe exhibition is a joint venture between and produced by The Swedish History Museum in Sweden and MuseumsPartner in Austria.

BEHIND THE SCENES

ROM Curator Craig Cipolla has been living and breathing longships and metalcraft for over a year. We spoke with him about the exhibition.

Why is it important to look at Vikings now?

Many people are curious about the Norse, and recent excavations have yielded new insights. Our exhibition allows visitors to challenge commonly held conceptions of the Vikings.

Is there any Canadian content in the exhibition?

I’ve added a section that explores the arrival and settlement of the Vikings in Canada. It includes objects from the only unequivocal Norse site in Canada, L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland.

What will visitors experience?

A breadth of authentic Viking objects, some of which are rarely on display outside Scandinavia. Several boat replicas, touch-screen games and activities for families. You can write a simple message in runes, listen to sagas about mythological characters, or try to lift a replica of a Viking sword. Craig Cipolla is the ROM’s

associate curator of North American archaeology.
