I ROLLINS ALUMNI RECORD No. 5-6 MAY-JUNE, 1961 VOL. XXXVIII

CLASS OF 1961 MEMBERS ADDED TO ALUMNI ROLL SfcUi»WMI||

Led by their officers the members of the class of 1961 file into Knowles Memorial Chapel where they were awarded diplomas signifying their transition from students to Alumni of Rollins College.

Commencement exercises in Knowles Memorial Chapel June 2, added 144 new names to the list of graduates of Rollins College. Of this number, 107 received A.B. degrees, 16 B.S. degrees and four B.M. degrees. Master of Bus- iness Administration degrees were awarded to 17.

The Sullivan Medallion was awarded to three members of the class. They are: Robert W. Fleming of Canton, N.C.; John Edward Harkness of De- troit, Michigan, and Sally Hunt, Cass City, Michigan. Graduating with high- est distinction was Gustav Zamorsky of Winter Park. Graduating with dis- tinction were: Mildred Searles Dun- lap of Orlando, James Steve Browder of Winter Garden and Laura Jane Glasser of Winter Park.

Dr. Bruce B. Wavell, who received his degrees at London University, de- livered the commencement address and^ his subject was "Academic Val- ues". He has been on the faculty for two years as teacher of mathematics and philosophy.

Of the 127 graduating seniors, 44 have indicated that they will continue

their studies through their master's or doctor's degrees. Several have re- ceived grants or assistantships includ- ing a Fulbright Grant to Germany and a National Defense Scholarship. Half of the class of 1961 have indicated that they will take positions in busi- ness, the professions or arts. The edu- cation field will gain 16 per cent of the class.

George W. Johnson, College attor- ney and secretary of the Board of Trustees since 1931 received the hon- orary degree of Doctor of Laws. Rob- bins E. Ralph, superintendent of the Florida Congregational Christian Con- ference received the George Morgan Ward medal.

NEW MEN'S DORM Ground will be broken in September

for a new $1,072,000 freshman hall which will house 196 men according to administration plans. A loan from the Home Finance Agency of the U.S. Community Facilities Administration has made possible the construction of this much needed facility on the Cam- pus. The four story building, in the shape of a cross, will contain 21 sep- arate units where eight freshmen and one upper classman will live.

Each unit will have its own private entrance, bedrooms, sitting room and bath. It also will contain typing rooms, a library, office room, meeting rooms and an apartment for a male residence head and his family.

The 21 upperclassmen counselors will be selected on a highly competi- tive basis and trained for the posi- tion.

The new building will be ready for occupancy by September, 1962.

SENIORS RECEIVE SULLIVAN MEDALLION AT GRADUATION

President McKean presents the Sullivan Medallion to three outstanding members of the class of 1961 at com- mencement. Left to right receiving the awards are: John Edward Harkness, Detroit, Michigan; Sally Hunt, Cass City Michigan, and Robert W. Fleming of Canton, North Carolina.

DEAN ENYART Mr. Rollins is gone. His passing removed from the Rollins picture

a unique, colorful and beloved part of the whole. While his death was not unexpected, it came as a shock to the hundreds of Rollins Alumni who knew and loved him. Although seriously ill for several years he could always call on some extra reserve of strength to enable him to work for the best interests of his beloved Rollins.

To recount the full measure of his many attributes is impossible. However, the words of Robert F. Whiston '42, which appeared in the pro- gram of the testimonial dinner in his honor at the 1959 reunion, so aptly recalls his picture that they well merit repeating.

To the frustrated freshman — a smiling man with a twinkle in his eye and an astonishing goatee . . .

To the sophisticated sophomore — a clever Dean of Men, whose "spy system" reported secrets that he just couldn't know . . .

To the junior — a wise and sympathetic educator who main- tained a sense of humor . . .

To the senior — a friend and confidant . . .

To the Alumni — a legend never to be forgotten . . .

We are engaged in a project to build a Field House on the Rollins Campus which will be a memorial to him. Just as his memory will live forever in the hearts of us whose lives touched his, the Dean Enyart Field House will be our concrete and lasting tribute to the man we loved.

STUDY WEEK How to Study Week, which was es-

tablished on the Campus last year to teach academic skills to entering freshmen, will be conducted again this year. The program will be ex- panded to permit 80 members of the entering class to attend. All students who took the pilot course last year report that the course was greatly beneficial to them during their first year on the Campus. How to Study Week will begin September 18. Regis- stration of new students will begin Sept. 25 and classes for the fall term will begin Monday, October 2.

PROGRAM HEAD Dr. W. T. Edwards, of the School

of Education, Florida State University, has been named to head the new Rol- lins Graduate Program in Teaching which will be started this fall.

A distinguished Florida educator and former president of the Florida Education Association, Dr. Edwards has been active in the education field for more than 30 years. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from Ohio State Univ.

Mrs. Edwards is the former Henri- etta Kuhl and was graduated from Rol- lins with the class of 1930.

FIELD HOUSE The campaign for funds for the Dean

Enyart Field House will move into the final stages early in September when a full scale personal solicitation cam- paign will be launched.

Ray Greene '23, and Frank William- son '48 have been named vice-chair- men for the campaign and Robert W. Stephens '31 has been named treasurer to assist the national chairman, Henry Lauterbach '37, in the Alumni cam- paign to build a memorial to Dean Enyart.

As this issue of the Record goes to press more than $75,000 has been con- tributed or pledged to the Fund.

Area chairmen and solicitors are be- ing recruited to carry the effort to individual Alumni in all sections of the country. A concerted effort will be made to contact every graduate and former student of Rollins and obtain their support in this all Alumni proj- ect for Rollins College.

This Diamond Jubilee project by Rollins Alumni will fill one of the most pressing needs of the College. At the present time there are no in- door facilities for the physical educa- tion classes, intramural events or var- sity basketball games.

Volunteer workers will be needed in every locality where there is a con- centration of Rollins Alumni. Your help is needed to make this dream of Dean Enyart's a reality and a me- morial to him. If you will help in your locality please notify Alumni House.

THANKS Dear Friends:

It has been impossible for me to answer all the wonderful notes and wires that I have received.

May I take this means of ex- pressing my heart-felt thanks to all you good friends.

I am sure your "Dean" would ioin me in love and appreciation to all his "Rollins Family".

E. Ethel Enyart

THE ROLLINS ALUMNI RECORD

ALUMNI GIFTS FOR 1960-61 TOTAL $135,807.17 Rollins Alumni contributed $135,-

807.17 to the College during the fiscal year 1960-61. The Field House Fund received the largest amount, $73,- 945.35, in cash and pledges. The Alum- ni Fund received $8,073.42 and gifts to the college for specified purposes accounted for $53,788.40. The Alumni Fund held its own in the face of the preliminary solicitation of funds for the Field House project.

On other pages of this issue of the RECORD will be found a list of Alum- ni contributions to the College, for all purposes, for the year ending June 30.

While every precaution has been taken to include every Alumni contri- butor in the Honor Roll it is possible, since the Alumni House staff is sub- ject to the usual number of human frailties, that some name may have been omitted. We will appreciate cor- rections and additions.

MRS. KENT RETIRES Claire Kent, who for the past nine

years has been a pillar of strength at Alumni House, retired July 1. She came to Alumni House from the Con- servatory of Music where she had worked for ten years. Her plans for the future are not definite but she will continue to live in Winter Park. Throughout her years of service to the College Mrs. Kent has made a host of friends among Alumni and her wide acquaintance has been of untold value to the work at Alumni House. She has agreed to help the staff when- ever she is needed — this will be quite often.

ALUMNI TRUSTEE

Robert A. Robertson '34, Orlando business man and civic leader, will represent Rollins Alumni on the Col- lege Board of Trustees for a term of three years. He was installed at the June meeting of the board.

HONOR HOUSE A small select group of Rollins sen-

ior women will undertake a new col- legiate responsibility next year. They will completely govern themselves. Ten coeds will live in a Senior Honor House with no residence head and no set house rules. They will accept full responsibility for their campus lives. Ten women have been chosen for the experiment for this first for Rollins and possibly the nation. Selected for the program on their academic, phys- ical and spiritual adjustment the group will live in Matthews House, a two story building at 520 Chase Ave- nue, formerly used as the College Dis- pensary.

CLUB OFFICERS Officers of the Central Florida

Alumni Club for the coming year are: William D. Gooch '50, president; Mrs. Robert Johnson (Betty Wheatley) '30, vice president; Mrs. Carter Bradford (Nancy Rohlfing) '35, secretary, and Earl Borders '58, treasurer. New di- rectors named are: Mrs. Quentin Bit- tie (Ina Mae Heath) '44, Mrs. Charles Hollinshead (Muff Murphy) '59, Robert H. Lorenzen '58, Cornelius VanBuren '49 and Mrs. Donald Riddle (Caroline Mills) '49. A program committee was named for the coming year. The first event will be the annual Pelican party in August. All Alumni in the Central Florida area will be notified when the date is selected.

June brought two weddings to our classmates, that we know of. On the third Herrick McConnell's daughter was married in the First Associate Re- formed Presbyterian Church of At- lanta. And on the 10th the daughter of Janet Cadman Sharp was married in the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando.

June also produced some graduates. Mary Comfort, daughter of Ethel Hahn Comfort graduated from the Miami Senior High School. And Kenny, son of Ruth Cole and Cloyde Russell grad- uated from a college in Tarkio, Mis- souri. No doubt there were others, but these are all we've heard about. Ruth and Cloyde were planning to go out to Kenny's graduation, and then in July see their other son married— he is working with missiles out in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Asa and Irene Jennings have just returned home from a business trip to the Middle East and a vacation in Europe.

The Orlando newspaper doesn't for- get our Buddy Ebsen, and often features his TV shows in its columns.

Before taking off for a long stay in Europe, Louise Howes Duckworth gave me some news items. She had lunch- eon with Aurora McKay in Tampa, and said Aurora is busy trying to settle her father's affairs and sell the old home. Louise and Manly will spend several weeks in Vienna and of course plan to see Gottfried Dinzl and his wife. Before sailing from New York Louise and Virginia Stelle will have a reunion.

After teaching for a couple of years in North Carolina, we understand that Charlotte Stienhans is returning to her old home town of Orlando.
