DESCRIPTION
STEEL ROLLING
Citation preview
When the work rolls are rotating with a peripheral speed,at some point in the roll gap,the peripheral velocities of the roll and the workpiece are equal. This point is known as the Nuetral Point. To the left of this point, the surface velocity of the metal is lower is than the roll peripheral velocity. This difference in speeds produces friction between the metal and the rolls which tends to draw the material in the roll gap.To the right of the nuetral point, the metal velocity is greater than the roll peripheral velocity,so the friction tends to retain the metal in the roll.Learning's from AIST Course, US Goel-FPTG*

Since all the rolls are elastic, some deformation of the rolls occurs during rolling.Arc of contact is lengthened for the same draft when compared with a rigid roll.Planes of entry and exit are shifted outward from the centerline of the rolls.

Strip Widening Phenomenon..Whenever a strip undergoes a reduction, there is always a tendency for the strip to undergo spread in lateral width. This spread in lateral width is also a reason why we cant have excessively large reductions in the strip.Learnings from AIST Course,US Goel-FPTG*

Exit strip thickness depends on Mill characteristics
Strip characteristics
Exit strip thickness can be determined by finding intersection of Mill elastic deflection and strip plastic curveLearnings from AIST Course,US Goel-FPTG*
