Most of the productions that come tothe Theatre Royal arrive because ofour personal relationship with theproducers.

I sometimes feel that the role isn’tgiven enough prominence. So let’sredress the balance.

Bill Kenwright, for instance, the mostprolific producer now operating inthe UK, since August has sent usDreamboats and Petticoats, Go Backfor Murder and Twelve Angry Men,and at very short notice threw inSave the Last Dance for Me as areplacement for A PassionateWoman.

I’ve known Bill for thirty years, sincebefore he was Chairman of EvertonFootball Club, and the constantcontact between his office and oursmeans that we hear about his showsat a very early stage.

Robert Noble doubles his role asproducer of Matthew Bourne with amore steady employment asCameron Mackintosh’s GeneralManager. In this schizophrenic guisehe’s brought us not only Swan Lake,Sleeping Beauty, EdwardScissorhands, Play Without Words,Highland Fling and Cinderella, butOliver!, Miss Saigon, Les Misérablesand Cats (first time round).

Robert and I share a birthday (andMatthew Bourne’s is the day after),though he’s a bit younger, and wemake a point of keeping in regularcontact so we know a long way inadvance what’s coming up.

But our most important producer bya very long way is the Theatre Royalitself, which every year does its bestto bring the people of Norfolk abeautifully wrapped Christmaspresent in the shape of thepantomime.

We love the panto. It’s a different kindof muscle for us to exercise. Ofcourse we ask the great RichardGauntlett – winner of the 2013Norfolk Arts Award for last year’sAladdin – to write, perform anddirect the panto, but we are in therealest possible sense the producer.

Instead of receiving a ready-madeshow we get to invent, to devise andproduce, to shape, publicise, castand write.

We pick the title, cover the costs, take the financial risk, get to knowthe acting company, recite the jokesand sing the songs as the run goeson. It’s our show.

In case you haven’t booked tickets,at the time of writing there are still afew left for CINDERELLA, Richard’snew take on an old story. You knowthe overall shape of the conflictbetween good and evil – but will yoube able to guess the details?

This year will be a true Christmascracker. See you there.

I look forward to hearing from youabout anything here, or aboutanything else at the Theatre Royal.

It’s difficult to think of a moresuccessful exponent of the one-manshow than Barry Humphries eventhough his appearances over the last50-plus years aren’t really one-manshows at all, given that his mostprominent comic creation – hisenduring and endearing alter-egoDame Edna Everage – is female.

Barry will be bringing Dame Ednaand more of his incarnations toNorwich Theatre Royal for hisfarewell tour ‘Eat Pray Laugh!’ whichruns between 4th-8th February 2014and touches on topics ranging fromclimate change to gay marriage.

For now though, Barry’s content to lethis star attraction Edna do the talking– and like the consummateprofessional that she is, she lays onthe flattery for the people of EastAnglia, even if it’s not all entirelybelievable.

Edna said: “I looked at the cities thathad been suggested for the tour andI said ‘what about Norwich?’ Theyasked me if I wanted to go there andI said ‘I have to!’

“So the world premiere of my showwill be on February 4th in Norwich. All the other cities – includingLondon’s West End, Sydney,Melbourne and everywhere else –are previews. There will be peopleflying in from all over the world tosee it.

“It really is a farewell tour; I’m notfooling my public. I can’t go ontravelling around the countryanymore.”

Fans of Humphries’ work will bepleased to hear that self-styledcultural attaché, Sir Les Patterson, willalso be making one of his customaryuncouth appearances – althoughEdna is less than delighted to besharing the stage.

“This is such a sore point. Mymanager Barry Humphries, who asyou know is a failed Australiancomedian, has signed me up. I’vetried to break my contract with himwithout success and in order to hurtme he has booked Les Patterson toopen my show in Norwich. You willhave a foul-mouthed drunk on thestage.

“But it’ll take no time for the mood tochange when I step onto the stage ina series of beautiful dresses, singingwonderful songs and dancing withmy little troupe of wonderful dancers:the Ednarettes and the Test-Edna-Rones.”

Dame Edna returns to NorwichTheatre Royal after first appearinghere back in 1979 and the FarewellTour has already wowed crowds inAustralia and New Zealand. We’ll fittingly let her have the lastword: “I’ve missed you Possums, don’t miss me!”

Farewell EdnaAfter over 50 glorious years in

show business, BarryHumphries is hanging up his

wig, glasses and sequined dress. But everyone’s favourite cross-

dressing Aussie genius justcouldn’t lower the curtain on

his career without sayinggoodbye to all the ‘possums’ at

Norwich Theatre Royal.

Theater Freiburg will bring two of theGerman composer’s masterpiecesParsifal and Tannhäuser to the city.Renowned for the superb quality of theirperformances, the company’s visit is amust-see not only for opera lovers acrossEast Anglia, but worldwide.

Based on medieval legend, Parsifal followsthe story of knights guarding twopriceless relics – the Holy Grail, and theHoly Spear which pierced Jesus on thecross. Their efforts to safeguard them isproving difficult and so Parsifal, inspiredby seeing the Holy Grail, decides toconfront the sorcerer Klingsor who istrying to seize control of both treasures.

Meanwhile Tannhäuser is an epic tale ofpassionate love, loss and drama followingthe lead character who has been a willingcaptive of Venus but then decides to askfor his freedom. When he gets it, he falls inlove with someone else triggering a storypacked with love and passion.

Roger Rowe, who runs the Norfolk &Norwich Music Club and is a Wagner buff, said: “These performances are, from mypoint of view, the most amazing thing thathas happened at the theatre since TheRing Cycle back in 1997. I can rememberthe incredible effect it had on the city andto have a company like this coming to Norwich with their complete orchestra isvery exciting.”

He said the choice of programme is alsovery interesting. “Parsifal is the very lastopera that Wagner wrote and, for years,he only allowed it to be performed inBayreuth because it was written to takeadvantage of the Bayreuth acoustics. It hasbecome one of his classic operas. It isunusual as it has a religious theme to it butit is about an everyday man. It is awonderful piece.

“Tannhäuser is one of his earlier operasand is also a fantastic piece. It is verycolourful with a great storyline.”

Norwich Theatre Royal chief executivePeter Wilson said it will be fantastic towelcome an opera company of Freiburg’scalibre to the city. He explained: “It is rightwe should host them. It is right that in theanniversary of 1914, it should be a majorGerman company doing the works ofWagner because it is important for us toremember we weren’t the only nation tosuffer between 1914-18, and the German

culture is an incredibly important part oftheir national psyche. I am thrilled thatFreiburg have agreed to come here. Itwill be, artistically, a great success.”

He also hopes it will be a major boost tothe local economy. Peter explained:“There are around 200 people fromTheater Freiburg coming here for 10days. They will need to stay somewhere,be fed and be ferried around. We alsohope they will visit places like HoughtonHall, the Pensthorpe Waterfowl Trust andmuch more. There are plenty of things inNorfolk to trumpet and this is a reallygood opportunity to do that.”

Meanwhile Roger Rowe said it is likely toleave a lasting legacy for the city: “I am aWagner enthusiast and have been toBayreuth several times. I was here for theNorwich Ring and I have been all overthe place to see his work. What Iremember about the Norwich Ring ishow often, when you are travelling inother parts of the world, you meetpeople who have been to Norwich forthe Ring and I think Wagnerfest will havethe same effect.”

She has returned to the Norwich TheatreRoyal arts course, where her stage storybegan, to be the administrator andtechnician - ensuring that things gowithout a hitch on-stage and off for bothjunior and adult students.

Her current projects include being stagemanager for the youth company’sforthcoming production of Feathers In TheSnow, which is performed at The Garagefrom December 4-7. She said: “At themoment, that means being in rehearsalsevery week. Come the week of the show, Ihelp the director David Lambert pull theshow together, help with the lighting andthe sound, assist the students with theircostumes, and translate what they havelearned in the rehearsal rooms to thestage space.”

The chance to work so closely with theyouth course is something Rachel relishes, although she admits seeing the studentsfinally move on after working with themfor many years can be a little bittersweet.

She explained: “I suppose you get to feelwhat parents go through when theirchildren go off to university. It is really niceto see that progress though.”

Rachel is a great example of that progress, joining the arts course herself at the age of11 when it used to be based in the oldStudio Theatre in the Theatre Royal car-park and her debut on-stage appearancein Alice In Wonderland.

She remembers how a bad performanceat the age of 16 led her to take a changeof career direction. “I spoke to the coursedirector David Lambert after the showand said I am not very good at acting but Idon’t want to leave the arts course. Hesaid what about stage-managing the adultshow which is coming up? It went fromthere and I found I had an aptitude for it.That was something he saw in me which iswhy he offered the opportunity.”

She then studied stage management atthe famous Liverpool Institute for thePerforming Arts. Rachel said: “That was a

really special experience. It is a fantasticplace to be. I did get to meet PaulMcCartney much to my parents’ joy, although they were quite envious as theyweren’t there. It was really nice to go awayand find out what you have been doing allthis time is the right way to go for yourselfpersonally and find you could make acareer in it.”

From there, it was a wealth of differentprojects from working with small theatrecompanies to being part of the finalnational tour (so far!) of Miss Saigon, andRachel says she loves that variety. “All ofthose different plays are embedded deepwithin my psyche along with the fantasticarray of part-time or temporary jobs I hadbetween them, which was lots of fun. Youmet lots of different people and you alsoget that all the time in theatre. You start anew job in theatre and you will probablyonly know one person in that room, who isthe person who has hired you. In a veryshort period, you have got to learn towork together and put a show together.”

And Rachel believes it is these vitalingredients which have helped her – andmany Arts Course alumni – to enjoysuccessful careers in whatever they haveended up doing. “The course equips youfor the profession but also for general day-to-day life as well. We have a lot of formerstudents who are working in the theatrebusiness but we have also got people whohave chosen to go into other professionslike policemen, doctors and teachers. Allof those people have used the confidenceand skills they got from the arts course togo into their chosen profession. It’s not justabout becoming an actor. It can also helpwith anything as the skills aretransferable.”

So a fitting legacy continues to be createdby David Lambert, Rachel Lloyd and theteam training students, whether it is SamClaflin in the next big-screen blockbusteror hundreds of other young people settingout successfully into the world of work.

What better way to start a visit to thetheatre than to dine in style in our new-lookrestaurant? Kemp’s Restaurant is namedafter Will Kemp, one of Shakespeare’splayers, who in 1600 danced from Londonto Norwich in his ‘nine daies wonder’.Although his publicity stunt pre-dated eventhe earliest theatre building on this site,we’ve chosen the name to celebrate thetheatrical and local connections. You canread more about Will Kemp inside theentrance to the restaurant.

In revamping the restaurant, we’ve listenedto your feedback, installing entrance doorsto combat the worst of the winter draughts;reconfiguring the toilet area to ensure thefacilities are discrete (and discreet!); andinjecting a burst of colour and warmth intothe décor and furniture.

The refurbishment has left us with awarmer, more intimate setting perfect forpre-show dining. Removing some of thefixed seating has increased the flexibility ofthe space so if you’re planning a largercelebration – a family party or works outing– talk to us and let us help make it happen.

Remember we’re open throughout the day,Monday to Saturday, and you don’t need tobe watching a show to enjoy a visit to therestaurant. Pop in for a coffee and cakewhile shopping, or meet up with family andfriends for lunch – our central location, welcoming atmosphere and delicious foodmake us the ideal setting for refreshments.

The first thing that strikes you aboutCassidy Little is the extraordinarilymatter-of-fact way he tells his story. It is fair to say his life would be worthy ofa play in its own right. Born and broughtup in Newfoundland, he always had agreat passion for dance and ended upstudying it at a performing arts school inMissouri before eventually joining theMid-American Dance Company. But he had family in England anddecided to come to this country via aspell in Canada. Cassidy then forged acareer in stand-up comedy and, afterlosing a bet one evening, joined themilitary.

He became part of 42 Commando RoyalMarines and, while serving on hissecond tour in Afghanistan back in 2011,his life changed for ever.

“I was halfway through my second tourof duty there when I lost a leg and acouple of my friends in an IED explosion.I was in the process of recovering atHeadley Court when I met a captain whohad been in a production called The TwoWorlds Of Charlie F. She said they werelooking for people to appear in it andknew I had done a bit of acting,” recalled Cassidy.

From there, he became part of the castof the play which takes a soldier’s-eye-view of service, injury and recovery. With a starting point of the Afghanistanwar, it sees how military personnel copewith the consequences of serious injuryand how they recover from the physicaland psychological impact of war whichcan change their lives forever.

Taking in scenes of morphine-inducedhallucinations and the recovery processof places like Headley Court, the playpromises to combine the power andintensity of people facing incrediblechallenges in their day-to-day life withplenty of humour, weaving in the strongbonds of support and care militarypersonnel share with each other.

And it is this mix of emotions whichcomes through in the play. “When youare somewhere like Afghanistan, you arenot facing this 24 hour a day, seven day aweek intensity. You do have the time towrite a letter or read a book,” saidCassidy.

He is at pains to say the play doesfeature a fair share of comedy and heart-warming moments, but it also shows thebrotherhood (and sisterhood) which

develops due to the situations theyface, and the nature of their livingand working arrangements. Heexplained: “In some situations, youcan end up closer than family. Afterall, not many people are togetherwith their families for 7 days a week,24 hours a day, eight months at atime. For this period of time, you areliving side-by-side, washing side-by-side, fighting side-by-side. It is arelationship which is almost deeperthan family.”

The production itself started life asthe brain-child of Alice Driver whowanted to set up a work placementwithin a theatre company for servingwounded, injured and sick militarypersonnel.

For the first time ever, the Ministry ofDefence allowed her access tosoldiers and this led to a series ofworkshops and interviews to helpcreate the piece. The award-winningplaywright Owen Sheers came onboard, along with a number of keypartners including the Theatre RoyalHaymarket Masterclass Trust, theRoyal British Legion and DefenceRecovering Capability.

And it was a project which gainedhuge audience acclaim. Theopening performances at London’sTheatre Royal Haymarket completelysold out, toured three cities, won anAmnesty International Award, andwere the subject of a BBC TVdocumentary.

Now it is heading out on the roadagain, with a cast of ex-servicemenand women, being performed at 10different venues including NorwichTheatre Royal on May 6-10.

Cassidy believes it will work on twolevels: as another way of helping thecast come to terms with what hashappened to them, and also givingeveryone an insight into theaftermath of conflict.

He explained: “When you join atheatre company and start workingwith the guys like you do inAfghanistan, you’re constantly talkingand sharing your experiences in themost honest and vulnerable wayspossible.

“It is also true to say that when youhave been through a trauma, one ofthe ways you try to protect yourself isnot to talk or think about it. Ofcourse, that can actually maketrauma worse. This experience notonly gives us the chance to talkabout it but also to explore thetrauma, helping to eradicate thedysfunction it can cause.”

Audiences have already beenstunned by the power of the play, and this incredible productionsounds like it is guaranteed to makeyou think, as well as give an insightinto what service personnel gothrough.

But, as he signs off, Cassidy onceagain wants to remind the audiencethere are plenty of uplifting momentsto make you smile too, in thispowerful play which shows the depthand the power of everyone’s abilityto deal with life-changing difficulties, and come out the other side.

Since 2008 we have drastically reducedour gas and energy use, and ouremissions. We have encouragedrecycling across all the departments, started composting our organic wasteand worked closely with The WoodlandTrust to offset our carbon output byplanting more trees. However, despite allthat we have achieved and all the planswe have made, it is not enough.

Julie’s Bicycle is an independent, non-profit, organisation who we apply to forour Industry Green certification. Theyhelp us to measure the impact that wehave on the environment and measureus against other theatres and artsorganisations. They have decided that, although we have made significant stepsforward, there is still much more wecould be doing.

And they are right. Overall, we havereduced our energy usage by 13% andour gas usage by a whopping 25%, butwe can do more. We want to do more.It is with this in mind that Helen Tully, thetheatre’s Environmental Champion, decided to form the Green Team. Thisgroup of like-minded individuals willstrive to engage, encourage andsupport all of our colleagues inreducing the theatre’s environmentalimpact. They are not the eco police, noractivists, but simply informers. Comingfrom a whole range of departments we help Helen reach everyone at the theatre.

Already we have had huge successes. Inour very first meeting one of our BarsDuty Managers noted that we could be

saving buckets of water by making surethat every one of our washing up sinkshas a plug. This may sound like a smallthing, but when all cups and saucersneed to be washed by hand (to preventour glasswashers being clogged withdairy fat) and they come back to the barintermittently, we found ourselvesrinsing them under a tap as we wentalong. This is an example ofconvenience over conservation. Byspending a very small amount of moneyon plugs and chains we are saving litresof water from going straight down thedrain.

As I said, this may seem like a smallthing, but water consumption andwastage are some of our biggestchallenges as a green venue. When wehave over 400,000 people visiting ourtheatre each year, a lot of water is goingto be used.

This kind of positive action is exactlywhy the Green Team was formed. Weact as an extension to what Helen isalready doing, as well as giving hersupport and ideas from staff. We aim todivide the task and multiply the success.

As Friends of the Theatre you are also akey part in keeping our theatre green. You may notice things that we may not.So if you do think of anything that couldhelp us reduce our impact on theenvironment, then don’t hesitate to grabone of us keen greens (pictured) and tellus all about it. We would be happy tohear from you. Or please feel free tocontact Helen directly [email protected].

Illusionist Jamie Allan is on the verge of anunusual double at Norwich Theatre Royal;helping create a stunning pantomimeillusion and then returning with his ownstage show.

“I was here for Aladdin last year anddesigned and worked on the effects forthe magic carpet,” he said. “I’m goodfriends with Richard Gauntlett and he keptshouting about how good NorwichTheatre Royal is.

“So I came here, loved it and decided thatI wanted to come back when I wastouring, as it’s got such a fantastic stage, auditorium and staff.”

Jamie’s iMagician show doesn’t featureany magic carpets but it does take a lookback at stories of illusion from down theages when it arrives on March 5.

“The first half of the show is about theevolution of magic. It takes you on ajourney from the oldest magicians whoseinventions changed the face of magic andgives a few twists on what they did.”The second half is a more futuristic look atmagic, taking inspiration from laserbeams, Twitter and the iPads that havehelped prompt the show’s name.

“I like doing things that people canassociate with at home. I was actually camped out at an Apple store to buy the iPad, and while I was queuing I heardsomeone say that it was magical - that gotme thinking that I had to make a trick with it.”

Meanwhile, Cirque Berserk, a troupe ofmulti-talented jugglers, clowns, acrobats, dancers, stuntmen and much morebesides, bring their spectacular show toNorwich on February 13-15 followingthree sell-out seasons at London’s HydePark.

But cast aside any preconceptions youmight have about traditional circus actsbecause this is no ordinary exhibition ofballoon-making and custard pie throwing.Instead, the group present a series ofdeath defying stunts, a world-recordholding strongman and, for the first timeever live on a UK stage, the Globe ofDeath motorcycle stunt, an act that doesn’trequire too much explanation.

The Daily Mail call the Cirque gang “theequal of anything in the history of noveltyshowbusiness” while Time Out label theshow as “jaw-slackening” and “heart-stoppingly good fun”.

In short, Cirque Berserk is a real feast forthe eyes. Quite appropriate then, asseeing is definitely believing at NorwichTheatre Royal in 2014.

Every so often, if you’relucky, you get the chance to

see something sospectacular and so

ridiculous that it leaves yourubbing your eyes in

disbelief.

But at Norwich TheatreRoyal, the spring 2014

season brings two acts thatwill leave you wondering

‘how on earth did they dothat?’ – Jamie Allan: iMagician

and Cirque Berserk.

A murder-mystery thriller is nothing newto the world of theatre. From the West Endsuccess of The Mousetrap to the long-running global success of An InspectorCalls, we all like to experience theexcitement of an on-stage whodunnit.

But a new writer is throwing his hat intothe ring of theatrical thrillers to rival thelikes of Agatha Christie and Susan Hill. Peter James has proved to be a hugesuccess in the literary world and is nowentering the world of theatre, co-producing a stage version of his firstbook The Perfect Murder.

And Norfolk-born-and-bred Claire Goosewho stars in the production saysaudiences are in for a real treat when itarrives in Norwich on January 20-25. “Ithink people can expect all the twists andturns of a Peter James thriller but it doeshave a comedy element too.”

Claire stars opposite actor, performer andTheatre Royal favourite Les Dennis as acouple who have been married for 20years and are facing a bit of a relationshipcrisis. She explained: “They are in quite abad place and their marriage is gettingrocky. There are also lots of secrets intheir relationship. Things then happen thatpush the story forward but I can’t say toomuch more without giving the plot away.”The one thing that can be revealed is asuspicious death triggers a debutinvestigation for Peter James’s detectivehero Roy Grace.

Claire and Les form part of an all-star castin the production, which also includesGray O’Brien (Tony Gordon in CoronationStreet), Steven Miller (doctor Lenny inCasualty), and Simona Armstong (one ofthe contestants in the BBC’s How Do YouSolve A Problem Like Maria?).

At the time we chat, Claire has not yetstarted rehearsals but she has had thechance to meet all of her co-stars. Shesaid: “We have already done the read-through and we got a feel for everyone. Ithink it is really going to work.”

And she said it is also great to have thebook’s author Peter James at the core ofthe whole tour. She said: “He is veryexcited to be a part of it all and is veryhands-on. He has helped to adapt it, ofcourse, and he is going to be comingdown to rehearsals. He is a lovely guy.”

The Perfect Murder is the latest projectfor Claire who has incredibly strongNorfolk links.

Born and brought up in the West of thecounty, she has many relatives that stilllive here and credits her initial drive to bea performer to the dance school whereshe first trod the boards as a youngster.

Claire recalled: “I think I was alwaysgoing to be doing what I am doing. Isuppose my first experience was throughbeing a member of a local dancingschool. We used to take part in theHunstanton pantomime and that, for me,was what started me off wanting to be onstage. It was my first experience. As I gotolder, I thought ‘that is what I want to do.”

She is particularly grateful to the JaneAshley-Emile School of Dance where shecut her teeth and learned so much aboutthe skills and techniques she needed onstage and behind the scenes. “It was anamazing experience. I think it certainlyhelped me with being a performer. Youwere taught about the importance ofgetting everything exactly right and thediscipline of performing too, with thingslike making sure you were on time.”

Her CV is characterised by a range ofroles including parts in a number of high-profile TV shows including Casualty,Waking The Dead, The Bill and Sky One’scurrent hit Mount Pleasant.

But she is greeting her latest role in The Perfect Murder as a challenge. “Ihave never toured before so that will bequite an experience. I will be heading allover the country but I have got friends invarious places so I will get the chance tostay with them,” said Claire.

And one of the places she is most lookingforward to is her ‘home’ venue of NorwichTheatre Royal. “It will be so exciting toperform there, especially as it will be myfirst visit. I’ve never been on stage therebefore. A lot of my family and friends stilllive in Norfolk so it is great that they willbe able to come.”

So it sounds like The Perfect Murder isthe perfect production in the perfectlocation for Claire. Now everyone justneeds to work out whodunnit!

She is one of TV’s mostfamiliar actresses making

her mark in a host of prime-time shows and taking on a

number of roles.

But Claire Goose is headingback to the stage to takepart in her very first UK

tour which will also see herrevisit her Norfolk roots.

She talks more aboutstarring in the stage versionof a classic murder mystery

penned by one of thiscountry’s top thriller writers

and why it is a buzz to bepart of the ensemble cast in

The Perfect Murder.

Q) Describe your role at the theatre.

Being Front of House Manager means makingsure everything runs smoothly in front of thecurtain. When I was about 13 my godmother tookme to see Les Mis in the West End. I hadnever heard of it before but it blew me away. That show ignited my passion for theatre; Ihave a lot to thank her for.

Q) What’s the most memorable production you’ve seen at the Theatre Royal?

End of the Rainbow. Tracie Bennett wasincredible as Judy Garland.

Q) What show or act would you most like to see come to the theatre?

Wicked is currently my favourite show, itwould be great to have it here. I could singalong every night!

Q) What would you wish for the futureof the Theatre Royal?

To keep engaging with audiences for years tocome and giving people that much neededbreak from reality. Live theatre is medicine forthe mind and soul, long may it continue
