ALAIN HUBERTArctic Ocean Traverse-North Greenland, 2007: Three hundred miles from the nearest land, the Arctic Ocean laps at the edge of the sea ice, only yards from Alain Hubert’s feet. While previous explorers encountered ice many metres thick, Hubert finds only water where the Ocean should normally be frozen into a thick multi-year ice pack. Dogged by anomalous sea ice conditions, Hubert is repeatedly forced to find an alternative route across the now open waters. Still 120 kilometres from his goal, each new discovery of fractured ice leads him to fear for the worst. June 14th, 2007; Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer’s 106-day crossing ends, but the journey is far from over. Hubert continues his quest to find the cause of this change in the ice.

WHEN YOU CANNOT TELL NIGHT FROM DAYWhether exploring an ice shelf or a solution cave, or any other unknown territory such as the Polar Regions, it is easy to lose track of time and the ability to distinguish night from day. For speleologists, who spend days in the darkness of caves with only artificial light to illuminate their working environment, their Explorer watch can be considered a survival instrument.

“BECAUSE IT’S THERE”When Sir John Hunt’s 1953 expedition to Everest succeeded in propelling Sir Ed-mund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the top of the world, Rolex had equipped every one of the 14 members with a Rolex Oys-ter Perpetual. While this was the first vic-torious ascent of Everest’s actual peak, it was the 15th Himalayan expedition to use Rolex watches. As a tribute to this astoun-ding feat, Rolex officially launched the Explorer later that same year. Rolex has taken into account the watch’s momentous history and used the knowledge gleaned from these pioneers to create a watch like no other, the Explorer II.

904L STEELRolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is usually reserved for the chemical industry, where maxi-mum resistance against corrosion proves essential. In this manner, 904L perfectly complements the other precious metals used by Rolex. A super alloy, 904L is unimaginably resistant and able to be polished to a high degree.

THE OYSTER CASEVery few people in the world are allowed inside a Rolex Oyster. Only authorised Ro-lex retailers have the necessary know-how, skills and equipment to gain access. Her-metically sealed to the case with a massive torque of five Newton metres, the back of any Oyster, as this case back demonstrates, creates an environment that protects the movement from shocks, pressure, dust, water and any other intrusive element.

AN OBSESSION WITH PERFECTION

ENGRAVED BEZELThe prolonged absence of natural light, when exploring the Polar Regions or spe-lunking in caves, can lead to chronotaraxis (time disorientation) more often than one would imagine. The 24-hour graduated bezel of the Explorer II works together with its fourth, red, 24-hour hand to assist ex-plorers in distinguishing night hours from day hours, no matter their location.

THE PARACHROM HAIRSPRINGA watch is only as precise as its oscillator is regular. Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leaving them vulnerable to magnetic fields and shocks. After five years of research, Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring. Crafted from a paramagnetic alloy, it is unaffected by magnetic fields and 10 times more resistant to shocks. Historically, the unique blue colour of the hairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for only the most accurate timepieces. Today, it guarantees the accuracy of your Rolex.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETERThe four simple words SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFI-CIALLY CERTIFIED engraved on the timepiece’s dial mean that the movement of this watch has endured 15 days and nights of testing by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres), an independent not-for-profit association. To receive COSC certification- a watch must demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and tempera-tures – the standard level of quality for every Rolex Chro-nometer.
