NGO(Non-Governmental Organization) It is a legally constituted organization created

by natural or legal persons that operates independently from any government

The term originated from the United Nation (UN), and is normally used to refer to organizations that do not form part of the government and are not conventional for-profit business


ENVIRONMENTAL NGOs

Environmental NGOs work on cases related to the environment

An example of an ENGO is Greenpeace

Transnational environmental networks might acquire a variety of benefits in sharing information with other organizations, campaigning towards an issue, and exchanging contact information


GREENPEACE

A non-governmental environmental organization

with offices in over forty countries and with an international coordinating body in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Greenpeace uses direct action and research to achieve its goals


Greenpeace states its goal is to "ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity" and focuses its campaigning on world wide issues such as global warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling and anti-nuclear issues

The global organization does not accept funding from governments, corporations or political parties, relying on more than 2.8 million individual supporters and foundation grants

Greenpeace is known for its direct actions and has been described as the most visible environmental organization in the world

ADVOCACY

Scientific and technical NGOs are assisting in bridging the gap between science, policy makers and the citizenry

Their research and education work is proving a vital addition to the decision and policy-making process

For instance, In India, the Centre for Science and Environment publishes ‘Citizen’s Reports on the Environment’ which focus on specific environmental issues, such as urban pollution, and flood management


2. ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND REPORTING

A)ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING In Bangladesh, about a dozen NGOs cooperate to

produce periodic “State of the Environment” reports, and in India, the Centre for Science and Environment publishes Citizen’s State of Environment Report

In many instances, these broad assessments are supplemented by specialized reports that facilitate debate on key environmental issues, promote public awareness and encourage active community participation in environmental protection


B) ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM• Environmental journalism can play a vital role in

creating market reactions in the international stock markets

• For example, studies in the U.S. and Canadian stock markets have shown markets react significantly to environmental news

• World band examined its impact on developing countries and found that it holds true for developing countries also


C) ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND GIS• Environmental monitoring and reporting by NGOs

have contributed substantially to environmental protection across the region

• A number of NGOs have embraced Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to help them with environmental monitoring

• For example, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has established a decentralized network that collects, stores and disseminates key bio-physical and socio-economic data


D) NEW RESEARCH• In the last few years a number of areas in water

resource; solid and hazardous waste management; and biodiversity related fields have gained importance

• New NGOs are emerging in the region to promote knowledge and awareness of these issues, while more established NGOs are responding to the new challenges by re-focusing their research efforts

• For example, in India, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has undertaken a Green Rating Project


3. EDUCATION AND TRAINING An increasing number of NGOs have also been

using education to encourage participation in conservation activities

NGOs have worked extensively with governments to help develop and implement national environmental education strategies

For example, in Nepal, NGOs have collaborated on the implementation of the environmental education element of the country’s National Conservation Strategy and have provided technical assistance to government agencies in running the programme


4. REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND NETWORKING

NGOs in the Asian and Pacific Region are increasingly working together to deal more effectively with transboundary issues and to improve the impact of associated campaigns

One high-profile grouping is the Third World Network (TWN) based in Malaysia, which is an independent non-profit international network of organizations and individuals involved in issues relating to development


GREEN RATING PROJECT(GRP) An attempt of CSE, a leading NGO, to present a

market-oriented framework by which the impact of industrialization can be measured and monitored

The goal of the project is to improve the environmental impacts of industry in India, and to guide industry to move towards this goal

At the end of each rating process, the green rating project lays down clear guidelines for the industry to improve its environmental performance

AIMS AND THE OBJECTIVES

To develop and function as a form of governance based on public participation, transparency, non-bureaucratic institutions and market-oriented policies

To monitor the existing environmental performance of companies and influence the future industrialization in the country

Green Rating Project’s ultimate aim is to get the industry develop and implement its own eco-friendly practices

To prepare environment inventory of companies by systematically collecting information about their environmental performance


• To develop a market-based incentive through the rating to encourage industries to voluntarily improve their environmental performance

• To empower communities and markets to proactively participate in accelerating sustainable economic growth

• To aid in better regulation of industrial pollution by regulatory authorities

• To aid in better formulation of policies by the government leading to sustainable development of Indian industries

RATING METHODOLOGY

Uses Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to rate the actual performance of companies

Considers stakeholders perception (local community, NGOs, regulators, media etc) as an integral part of the rating assessment


FINALLY. GRP will not only help to improve environmental

governance in the country by introducing transparency into the environmental performance of Indian companies and put public pressure on them to constantly upgrade their work in this area but it will also go a long way in lifting the environmental concern within the companies themselves right to the top

It will make industrial leaders realize that environmental compliance should not be restricted to meeting government norms but can actually become a proactive exercise in which official norms constitute only the minimum effort


CLEAN AHMEDABAD ABHIYAN

An NGO that has been working with the Ahmedabad municipal corporation in the area of solid waste and is instrumental for organizing door to door meetings, awareness campaigns to educate people about the importance of segregating waste into biodegradable and recyclable waste


DASHOLI GRAM SWARAJYA MANDAL Based in UP

Its aims are to encourage forest conservation and the use of forest products for self employment

The world famous Chipko Movement was spearheaded by this organization

It gives a great deal of importance to forest conservation in the Himalayas


GREEN FUTURE FOUNDATION

Based in Pune

To promote and work towards environmental protection, energy and ecological conservation and pollution control

They impart environmental education and training by organizing forest based camps for adults and youths


CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION(CEE)

They mainly aim to create environmental awareness in the communities, conduct widespread environmental education and training programmes through a very vast network

They have a vast range of publications – books, posters, educational packages, bibliographies and directories

There is also a large computerized database – the Environment Education bank, which has a collection of more than 800 environment concepts, about 2500 environment related activities and 100s of case studies
