Rogue Valley Handweavers’ Guild
Minutes for the meeting held on April 11, 2017. Welcome: President Betsy Brauer welcomed members and 2 visitors -Nancy Bonazzoli, who took the new weaver’s class and Joyce Ladasna, Diana Shultz’s sister. She also introduced Janis Thompson, our guest presenter of The Use of Color. Thank you Gloria Way, Jeanette Eliason and Laurie Elliott for the yummy snacks. Minutes: Leanne Krieger pointed out the $15 charge is for the Deb Essen workshop not today’s program. Al-so, Dorothy McKinley and Carolyn Wedberg brought snacks for the March meeting. Minutes approved as corrected. Treasurer: Leanne Krieger reported the RVHG checking account balance is $2,095.76; the savings account balance is $3,370.24 for a total worth of $5,466.00. Dedicated funds of $2,447.56 were subtracted for a total net worth of $3,018.44. There will be a drawing for MEF funds at the June meeting. If interested in submitting your name for the MEF scholarship, contact President Betsy Brauer by the end of May. Outreach: Volunteers are needed for Art N Bloom held on May 13th from 10am to 5pm and May 14th from11am to 4pm. If you have items to sell, submit a list of items to Jeanette at May’s meeting. Include the name of the item and price. The Heritage Fair will be held at Hanley Farms on May 20th from 11am to 4pm. Program Topics for 2017-18: Kamie passed around a sheet of possible programs for 2017-2018. She asked members to vote for top 3 choices. Kamie will compile list of top choices to be presented to members for a vote at May or June’s meeting. Program: Most of the meeting was turned over to Janis Thompson for her presentation on The Use of Color. Janis is a well known teacher. She has loved color since a child and loves to experiment with color. She rec-ommended members take a walk outside where they will see in nature every color and color combination that exists. She encouraged us to experiment with color and take chances. Yellow is her favorite color to include sparingly in every piece. The proportions of colors used in a piece are important. Janis recommended in-vesting in one or more color wheels which will help you explore new color combinations. She demonstrated Johannes Itten’s “The Color Star” and Over the Rainbow Color Masking Tool. These are useful tools to ex-plore color possibilities. Books Janis recommended are Color Works by Deb Menz and Book of Color by Mary Gilliatt. Janis’ presentation was informative, creative and fun! Short Topic: Kamie presented a short program on how to identify “Mystery Yarns.” The Weavers Companion Book has a section on characteristics of yarns and how they burn. Challenge for 2017- 2018: Various yarns have been given to RVHG. It was suggested participants use this yarn to make woven item. Possibly creating a woven item by selecting a bag not knowing what color or type of yarn is enclosed. Further details are coming. Show and Share: Among shared pieces were items woven at Crimp and Create Class with Dianne Totten. New Weaver’s Class: Elizabeth Acos and Dennis Rubert reported the New Weaver’s Class was informative and very successful. Nominating Committee Report - Existing officers have all agreed to continue next year. May’s program will be “Summer and Winter” weave presented by Marty Lemke and Nadine Purcell. Respectively Submitted by Martha Green

Saturday Handweavers’ Guild
Minutes of the meeting on April 8, 2017
President: Elizabeth was unable to attend today’s meeting as she attended the WeGO meeting in Portland; Vise President Kathy
Walker facilitated today’s meeting at the Phoenix library. Kathy thanked our hostess Dorothy and Teresa for the fabulous treats
today.
Vice President: Kathy Walker reminded members of this year’s challenge; “WEAVE SOMETHING YOU’VE NEVER WOVEN BE-
FORE”. Kathy envisions everyone truly challenging themselves this guild year with something new! You decide what is new; a
pattern, weave structure, a technique of maybe a new fiber or an old thought that brings fear to your thoughts; just break-out of
your comfort zone and explore.
Secretary: Minutes of last month approved without corrections.
Treasurer: Katy gave the financial report. The new checking account balance is $1,384.44 after deposits and expenses. Our
savings account balance is unchanged at $2,834.49. The scholarship fund is $224.32 and the library fund is at $116.21, the new
program fund is $110.00; these special funds are accounted for in the checking account total. All monies held by the guild to date
amount to a grand total of $4,218.93. Katy also gave a rundown of expenses for the Dianne Totten workshop; the total expenses
were $1,740.51, the guild paid 22% of expenses ($390.51) and members paid 78% of expenses at $90.00 each.
This Month’s Program: Presented by Lucy DeFranco, My Journey of Making Clothing from Handwoven Cloth . Lucy brought in a
treasure chest of clothing she has created over her many years of weaving. She shared clothing she made for her children and
herself, including blouses, skirts, vests and coats. Lucy provided excellent information regarding the yardage, width in the reed,
EPI ends, shrinkage and fiber contents. Lucy also shared her patterns and instructions for construction, some were her own
patterns and some commercial patterns that included a tunic, vest and two women’s tops. Lucy shared what worked and what
changes she made to create garments she designed; such adding a gusset under a armhole to have more ease of movement, align-
ing patterns in the cloth to match at the seams, how much stuffing to use in a parka style jacket. Lucy also showed how she did
minor reconstruction of some garments to update the style and/or create visual interest. Lucy brought handwoven magazine
patterns, commercial patterns she used and said that the Seattle Handweavers guild has had an ongoing garment study group for
35 years running.
Workshops: The Diane Totten workshop was a fun and informative time with many samples completed in class and then re-
viewed together. We discussed what we liked and or disliked about our samples. Members should begin thinking of programs
they are interested in for the next guild year, so a vote may occur in June and planning can then begin.
Outreach: Linda mentioned that a new spinning group is forming, they will be meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month May 8
at 10am the meeting location is Jennies Yarn Shop, 837 E. Main in Medford. The Elk Mtn. Highland Games in Wimer will be April
29 & 30th Linda will not be in attendance but everyone is welcome to come out and demonstrate. Admission is free if you are
demonstrating fiber arts. Caprice Vineyards in Jacksonville will be having an Alpaca shearing day. Spinners are invited to come out
and demonstrate while the animals are sheared. The event will take place on the 3rd of June. Art-in-Bloom will be Mother’s Day
weekend, May 13th & 14th. The RVHG will be having a booth. Contact Elizabeth Acos if you are interested in helping man the
booth or demonstrating. Elizabeth Acos – [email protected] or 541-552-0143
WeGO: Our guild will be hosting the WeGO meeting on October 7, 2017. All guild members are always welcome to attend the
WeGO meetings.
ANWG: No new information, Cindy forwards all information by email as it is received.
Library: Bridget Bloch is the contact if there is a book of interest to you, [email protected] or call her at
541.488.2027. The guild received a new Handwoven magazine this month.

Saturday Handweavers’ Guild - continued
Other Old Business: The study group is exploring the book The Complete Book of Drafts for Hand Weavers by Madelyn Van
der Hoogt, they meet at 12:30 prior to the regular guild meeting.
Teresa announced the new date for the class “Spinable Feast” with Janis Thompson will be June 3rd.
A committee including Teresa, Deb and Bridget was formed to create a “New Member Packet” as discussed at the previous
meeting and Kathy Walker offered to also help with putting the binders together once information is complied. If anyone has
information they would like to see included please send an email to any of the committee members. Likewise, if you would like
your name included as an instructor, mentor, etc please forward that information to be included.
Laurie Elliott will update the Mail Tribune/Tempo regarding the guild meeting announcement and location of meetings.
New Business:
https://handweaving.net is an interesting website of 63,812 drafts. It is a digital archive of weaving drafts and historical docu-
ments, and many are public domain. The subscription price is $3.50/month or $20.00/year.
A vote occurred to give a donation of $50.00 to HGA for Convergence, in lieu of the annual donation to the Fiber Trust.
Officers for next year: Elizabeth White: President, Kathy Fennel: Treasurer, Thalia Keple: Secretary with Vicki Guy as back-up and
Deb Keberle: Workshop Coordinator. At this time we do not have a vice president. Kathy Walker offered to be vice president
next year if she does not move.
The vice president gets to pick the programs each month and the challenge for the year; any interested members please voice
your desire at the May meeting. We must vote on the election of new board members in the upcoming months.
Teresa will stay-on as editor of the newsletter for the next year then will be turning over her pen (or keyboard) to the next lucky
person; please begin thinking about this fun and creative position that will be available sooner than you think; the year will fly by
and the newsletter is a vital instrument for the guilds for sharing information.
Show-n-Share is always great and inspiring; please bring pieces to share with the group each month.
Next Month: The next two meetings will be at the Jacksonville library.
Respectfully submitted,
Deb Keberle
