The following paragraphs include my experience at Rogers TV:
During my summer internship at Rogers TV, I was able to experience everything from the rigorous aspects of fast-paced television, to the importance of every position on set.
My responsibilities as an intern included doing more than just one position on a show, but it was also to know everything that happens in the studio. This primarily included the design setup for the show, and making sure that the cameras are locked, and setup for the right shot. Making sure all the necessary cables (BNC, CamLock, XLR, & extension cables) are in place, and having to move large props was another prerequisite. Minor details such as positioning smaller lights, getting water for the guests and hosts, and having to confirm possible problems with the producers was another absolute necessity.
As a cameraman, knowing key terms, and having free control of the camera is essential in order for the show to work. I was able to learn how to frame a variety of shots, and learn the abbreviations used by producers.
As an audio mixer, I learned how to put on/set up and test microphone transmitters and IFB earpieces. During shows, I learned the timing for controlling faders and learned how to operate a mixer board.
As a graphics operator, retrieving the crew call list for everyone on show/guest for all segments was something that had to be done for the credits. During the show, knowing the timing for when to put up a name was very important. Names could only be put under certain circumstances. Ex. Can’t be done under two shot, but rather on a single profile that is long enough for the title to be put.
Being the technical director/vision mixer for a show involves having to switch in between cameras. In the one chance I was able to direct, I learned how to signal cameraman to ready shots, and learned how to use a visual mixer.

In live mobile productions I was mainly there as a stationed cameraman, who would setup cameras, tripods, and connect cables. However, in some cases I had to control the cables as a wrangler for the person who was handheld. In another scenario with a shortage of crew, I was a handheld camera operator for a wrestling tournament. I learned how to control, balance, and move with a heavy camera.
During my few months at Rogers TV I have experienced a lot from when I started, but every time I go to a show, I still find myself learning more and more. Confidently I have grasped that television is more than just the director/producers, it is comprised of a team effort, and can be only be done under a highly skilled and motivated team.
If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact my supervisor/production coordinator, Stephanie Caramanico at [email protected] for further inquiries.
Warm regards,
Dhruv Patel
