Ester, Ether, Sugar Derivativesand Other Specialities
By 1931, Deutsche Hydrierwerke (DHW)in Rodleben/Germany patented andinitiated the world’s first production offatty alcohols based on the evolvingtechnology of catalytic, high pressurehydrogenation. Today this importantdevelopment in chemical processing still influences our lives. Industries suchas food & nutrition, detergents andtoiletries, cosmetics and pharmaceuticalsas well as other industrial processes rely on these oleochemistry branchachievements.The experiences of DHW in hydro-genation technology for manufacturing fatty and sugar alcohols were thefundamentals for the ensuing „cascade“of chemical modifications leading to thedevelopment of esters, ethers, sugarderivatives and other chemicalspecialities. Applications of all theseproducts are as diverse as the productsthemselves being used as emulsifiers,surface active agents, chemicalmodifiers, consistency promoters,moisturizers, emollients, lubricants orchemical intermediates.

Standard Product Line
Our ester product line includes differentclasses such as wax, glycerol, sorbitanand speciality esters. All are producedstarting from 100% renewable,vegetable-derived sources such aspalm oil, palmkernel oil, coconut oil,rapeseed oil... Through their different functions andeffects, our esters can be used in abroad variety of different industrialapplications. Some of them act asnonionic surfactants enabling theformulation of water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions incosmetic and pharmaceutical goodsand others provide outstanding sensoryor stabilizing properties for manyproducts in the nutritional sector. Through their addition, various industrialmanufacturing processes such aspolymer processing or oil recovery canbe simplified considerably.

Examples of Applications
The wax esters Rofacer DO,Rofacer OLO and Rofacer ST aremainly used as solvents in printinginks and as lubricating agents inmetalworking fluids.
Rofacer OLO has a specificapplication as waterproofing agent forleather.
Rofacer GMO and Rofacer GTOare components of plasticizer blendsfor heatshrinkable polyester films.
The Sorbitanesters Rofacer SML,Rofacer SMO, Rofacer SMS andRofacer STS are used asemulsifiers during polymerisationprocesses, in the polymer additivesindustry, in printing ink formulations or in emulsion explosives.Rofacer OE, Rofacer 148 andRofacer 188 are non-aqueoussolvents in cleaning formulations forthe printing industry.
Sorbon as a sugar diol is a buildingblock for polycondensates,polyurethanes and polyamides. Specialpolyesters based on Sorbon are maincomponents of new acousticmaterials.
