In addition to our well-known Day Camp and Summer Stock Theatre programs, Roeper offers SPECIALTY CAmPS to meet specific interests of students that are smaller in size and shorter in duration. Each SPECIALTY CAmP allows campers to have fun and learn from Roeper teachers who are experts in their fields.

Photography CampFor students entering grades 7 – 12

Clay CampGRADES 3 – 12 and Adults

Clay is an exciting and magical material. Duirng the two week session, students will learn about the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring their creativity. ROEpER ClAy CAMp is a unique pottery program offering a total hands-on experience for everyone. We offer patient encouragement and personal guidance. Classes are small, with a maximum of 12 students per class. Students receive both group and individual instruction at their own levels. A wide variety of ceramic techniques are taught: shaping clay into pinch pots, designing and constructing slab projects, building unique coil vessels, clay decoration and glazing.

Classes will be taught by Roeper faculty member, TESSA STEIN. ms. Stein graduated with a B.A. Degree in Ceramics from the Johannesburg College of Art in South Africa. For 30 years, she has been working as a ceramic artist and educator. She has traveled extensively, working as a production potterin various countries. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in South Africa, Canada and the United States. She has an extensive teaching background, and the majority of her teaching experience has been as a resident artist in over 50 schools. Before joining the Roeper faculty in 2009, she

worked in the Education Department at the D.I.A., VSA Arts of michigan and was Education Director at Paint Creek Center for the Arts.

The ROEpER SuMMER SCIENCE CAMp is an opportunity for middle school students who love science to explore science concepts with hands-on activities in real-life situations. We will build science knowledge and experience using inquiry-based activities that employ the scientific method, data collection and pure discovery. Students will learn to relate experimentation and science to the real world in these lively classes.

Science Camp is led by The Roeper School Science teacher, WENDy MAyER. Wendy holds an Associate’s Degree from Schoolcraft College, a Bachelor’s Degree (summa cum laude) in Psychology and a master’s Degree in Science Education from Wayne State University. She has been teaching for nine years and currently teaches 7th and 8th grade science, health and a multitude of middle school science electives.

SESSION 1: ARTS, EATS AND BEAKERSOne-week, JuNE 23 – 27, 9am – 3pm, $250

Ever wonder just what’s behind the food you eat and the art you create? In this ad-venture, you will whip up delectable delights and masterpieces of art with creative chemistry. Can you imagine it? Creating your own perfume, designing your own henna tattoo, “flubber” making and tye-dying are just a few of the scientific won-derments you will encounter on this sensory journey.

SESSION 2: FuN WITH FORENSIC SCIENCEOne-week, AuGuST 18 – 22, 9am – 3pm, $250

Put on your gumshoes and follow the clues as we explore the fascinating world of forensic science. From fingerprinting to chemical analysis, you will learn about the many strategies and techniques the experts use to solve crimes. If you are inter-ested in testing out your crime scene investigation skills and enjoy solving puzzles, then join us for the adventure in sleuthing!

Photography Camp

The ROEpER pHOTOGRApHy CAMp is a wonderful way for students interested in

photography to explore the magic of black and white pinhole photography using an

authentic darkroom. This is a hands-on experience for students entering 7th to 12th

grades. Students will shoot a variety of pinhole cameras starting with the standard

oatmeal container. Students will produce paper negatives, make positives in the

darkroom and learn how to hand color black and white photographs. All materials

are provided.

Photography Camp is led by Roeper faculty member,

MICHEllE STAMlER. michelle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in

Art History from Oakland University. She has been teaching

photography at The Roeper School for 21 years, currently

teaching darkroom photography, digital photography, digital

video editing and graphic design to middle and upper school

students. michelle, a freelance and fine art photographer,

began her career in England and has exhibited in Europe and

across the United States.

Che§§ CampGRADES 3 – 8

The ROEpER SCHOlASTIC CHESS CAMp is a five-day chess adventure for

children entering 3rd through 8th grades who wish to learn, study and have fun with

chess. The camp is open to beginning, intermediate and advanced students of the

game. morning sessions consist of small group lessons divdided by skill level and

age. Afternoons are devoted to whole group competitive play. On the last day of

camp, all students have the opportunity to participate in a Rated Scholastic Chess

Tournament.

Chess Camp is led by two Roeper faculty members,

Art CampROEPER

GRADES 6 – 9

The ROEpER ART CAMp is for students who love art and want to develop their

drawing and painting skills. Students entering grades 6 through 9 will use both

observation and imagination for an introduction to traditional and contemporary art.

Students can expect to work in a variety of media with individual and collaborative

projects.

Roeper Art Camp is led by The Roeper School Art teacher,

JANET SzETO. Janet holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts

and Communication from Rutgers University and a master’s

Degree in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute

of Chicago. She has been teaching for more than nine years

and currently teaches drawing, painting, printmaking and

art history to middle and upper school students. She has a

strong interest in learning about contemporary artists and

in introducing experimental approaches in artmaking using

collage and mixed media.

Dance CampGRADES K – 9

The ROEpER SuMMER DANCE CAMp is designed to engage students with a passion for dance in a challenging and creative summer dance experience. Each one-week camp provides young dancers with a solid foundation in ballet and modern dance technique, combined with the opportunity to explore and refine their choreographic and interpretive dance skills. Classes are held in the Dance Studio on The Roeper School’s Birmingham campus, which is equipped with a sprung wood floor, portable ballet barres and mirrors.

All classes will be taught by Roeper faculty member, SANDRA AllEN. ms. Allen is the Artistic Director of the Roeper Repertory Dance Theatre and the Roeper Dance Ensemble. During the academic year, she teaches dance, creative movement, performing arts and yoga to children in preschool through grade 12 at The Roeper School. As a professional dancer, she has performed with both ballet and modern-based dance companies, and she has choreographed for numerous community theatre and school productions. ms. Allen earned her BA degree from Wayne State University.

NOTE: Modern dance classes are conducted bare-footed. Ballet shoes are recommended, but not required, for ballet class. Students must provide their own snacks and beverages and lunch for full-day students. Students must be picked up at the designated dismissal time. There will be no supervision after that time.

All Roeper Specialty Camps are held at The Roeper School’s Birmingham Campus located at 1051 Oakland Avenue in Birmingham (two blocks north of maple on the west side of Adams Road).

For full-day programs, students must provide their own lunches. Vending machines are available for snack and beverage purchases.

Online registration is available at www.roeper.org, or applicants may fill out both sides of the registration form, tear it off and mail it with the full payment to:

Enrollment is limited, so early registration is advised. Credit cards are not accepted.

For a refund of fee, all cancellations must be in writing and received by may 30, 2014. No refunds will be issued after may 30, 2014.
