VZW Roeland organizes leisure activities for young people aged 7 to 19 in Dutch, French and English to improve their language skills and to stimulate their interest in foreign languages. Roeland developed its own playful, creative teaching methods, aiming at total immersion.

During the school holidays we organize residential language courses as well as day camps in Flanders, Wallonia, France and the United Kingdom. Teenage school groups can participate in our annual youth drama projects in French (Artscène) or English (Artscene). We also conduct French language city visits for schools to Ghent, Namur, Liège and Lille. In 2008 we started Dutch language day camps for foreign newcomers. With success: in 2011 we won the ELIT* label (*European Label for Innovative Language Education) for our Dutch language initiatives for newcomers.

Roeland was founded in 1971 and our offices are situated in Gent, Belgium. Our team consists of ten employees, working together with more than 1,000 volunteers. Through our activities we reach an average of 13,000 children and teenagers annually. Roeland is recognized and subsidized by the Flemish government, the province of East-Flanders and the city of Gent. For more information, please refer to our website: www.roeland.be.

• A creative and stimulating working environment • The opportunity to gather experience in youth work• Coaching by experienced staff• Free training sessions • A volunteer allowance

The three basic principles of our playful and creative teaching method are:

A. SPEAKING THE TARGET LANGUAGE AT ALL TIMESDuring our 13+ language courses in the UK only the target language is spoken. Students as well as instructors abide by this rule. We apply the rule less strictly during the junior day camps for children aged 11-13. The children are encouraged to speak the target language at all times, but may ask staff (or their classmates) questions in their mother tongue if necessary.

B. ACTIVE PRESENCE & STUDENT INTERACTIONTo encourage students to always speak the target language, we support the principle of ‘active presence’. This means that language instructors are always present and mix with the students, not only during lessons but also during sports activities, games, meals and breaks. There are so many topics to discuss: lessons, games, yesterday’s or tomorrow’s activities, workshops, holidays, family, hobbies, … Training communicative skills: always and everywhere!

C. CORRECTING MISTAKESOur language instructors do not only stimulate the students to talk, they also correct their mistakes, improving the language learning process. They do so unobtrusively, encouraging students at the same time. Such individually tailored feedback is typical for our language courses and according to us, a prerequisite to guarantee high quality.

We believe that the presence of native speakers is imperative to ensure high-quality language courses. Therefore we are always looking for native speakers to work as language instructors.

A. LANGUAGE COURSES 13+

During our residential language courses for ages 12 and up we work with two different teams of language instructors: a team of assistants (managed by a head assistant) who take care of leisure activities, and a team of teachers (managed by a head teacher). Even though both teams have their specific tasks, they collaborate closely to guarantee a successful language course.

• Language instructors mostly work with a group of maximum ten youngsters. Their main quality is their ability to motivate the teenagers and encourage them to take part in lessons and activities with great enthusiasm.

• Language instructors meet daily with the team and with head staff (head assistant and/or head teacher) to evaluate, prepare activities, share ideas etcetera.

• During break time, language instructors are on duty.• New language instructors commit to participating in our spring training

weekend. In summer, all language instructors are on location one or two days before the students arrive, in order to prepare.

A. JUNIOR DAY CAMPS

During the Easter and summer holidays we organize Junior day camps for children aged 11 to 13. One language course consists of five days (Monday till Friday from 9 AM till 5 PM). Location: the Roeland head office in Gent. A maximum of twenty children (not more than ten per group during teaching activities) enjoy short themed lessons, creative workshops, language games, singing sessions, etc. in English. At the end of the course a short performance is staged for family and friends.

B. RESIDENTIAL SUMMER COURSES IN THE UK

Our English language summer courses are on location in the UK and last 13 days. Students are expected to speak English at all times: during lessons, sports activities, games, themed evenings, meals, outings, etc. They improve both their spoken and written language skills in a playful and creative way.

A short description of the three locations:

Sutton Valence School (Kent)Three sessions for teenagers aged 13 to 15 This traditional school is beautifully situated in the historical village of Sutton Valence. It offers an indoor swimming pool and an abundance of sports facilities.

Cottesmore School (Kent)Two sessions for teenagers aged 13 to 15Cottesmore School is a fine Victorian mansion built by an ostrich-farming millionaire in 1894. Roeland vzw continuously trains its volunteer staff. Throughout the year, we organize training sessions and training weekends to further explore the field of foreign language instruction and refine our teaching methods.

TRAINING WEEKENDS FOR NEW LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORSAll Belgian applicants (teachers and assistants) are invited to participate in our training weekend. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the Roeland language holidays and to try out newly gained knowledge during sports activities, singing sessions, afternoon games and evening workshops. Language instructors are introduced to different types of teaching that are distinctively Roeland. There are separate weekends for our Dutch, French and English projects.

All training weekends are planned during the spring. Any candidate who returns the application form will receive more information.

TRAINING WEEK FOR YOUTH (LANGUAGE) INSTRUCTORS During the autumn school holidays we organize a training week for youth (language) instructors: ‘(Taal)animator in het jeugdwerk’. Flemish teenagers aged 16 and older may register for the course and can obtain a certificate. More information? Please refer to our website.

TRAINING SESSIONS FOR ALL VOLUNTEER STAFFWe regularly organize free training sessions for our volunteer staff, e.g. during our annual post-summer evaluation meeting in October and our kick-off day in January. We offer several workshops to choose from, depending on the volunteers’ interests and needs. Topics range from innovative teaching methods and the implementation of new leisure activities to cooking healthy food for groups and safety during language courses.

YOUTH THEATRE

Artscene All English is our annual youth drama project for teenage school groups. Its French counterpart is called Artscène français.

The project’s aim is to improve the teenagers’ foreign language skills through theatre and performance. During the school year the youngsters meet up weekly with their teacher and a a director to create and rehearse their play. In spring, the school groups stage their play at our annual festival in Gent. During the festival, the groups watch each other’s plays, express their appreciation during panel discussions, participate in drama workshops and enjoy a tour of Gent. The Flemish groups can also participate in a theatre festival abroad.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR:• English-speaking directors to support and teach drama to Flemish

school groups during rehearsals. As you meet up with the school group weekly, it is necessary that you live in Flanders.

• Foreign (school) groups to perform in English at our Artscene All English festival

• Actors/directors to give workshops during the festival (drama, improvisation, physical theatre, breakdance, hip-hop, ...)
