From the EditorRe-Engineering the Classics In the early 1950rsquos top speed in our highways

was about 50MPH the average distance between vehicles was about a ldquofootball fieldrdquo and if you needed directions a gas station would sell you a map Today technology has truly spoiled us with cruise control GPS navigation and on board computers that can even call for reservations at your favorite restaurant

So what do you do if you want all those great innovationrsquos in your old vehicle

You enter the world of The HOT ROD a special place were you will find methods and parts to bring that vintage car to present standards With a multitude of aftermarket companyrsquos constantly re-engineering and fabricating new parts like suspensions engines electronics also safety equipment and creature comforts

That now apply to classics and virtually anything on wheels

Old Town Kissimmee FL is the home of the most well known classic car cruise in the world the Saturday Nite Cruisereg We take pride in the part we play bringing car enthusiasts together to celebrate a time when the automobile was more than just an appliance a time when the automobile was the blend of the all-American ideals of individualism and freedom

Whether you were getting your kicks on route 66 or just heading for the drive-in these cars were anything but basic transportation Soaring tail fins oversized taillights chrome-plated metalwork and over the top upholstery transformed automobiles into art that was lovingly washed and polished by teenagers every weekend before they cruised down to the local hang out

Old Town captures this feeling every Saturday night and we invite all pre-1975 hot rods street rods and antiques to join us as we cruise down memory lane The cars start arriving at 100pm a live Oldies band takes the Main Stage starting at 700pm The cars cruise down Old Townrsquos brick streets at 830pm para

Clear weather vintage aircraft honorable veterans great music and 205 vehicles representing our automotive history all the way from the 1920rsquos to 2013 That in a nutshell sums up the Wings Over Miami Air Museum Festival and Car Show held on May 25 2013

Over 1650 people came to enjoy the festival and

view the fine automobiles on display There was plenty of blue grass music provided by several bands and several flights of vintage aircraft roared overhead The day was full of activities and special treats such as the historical seminar from renowned author Seth Bramson

the photography exhibit and to everyonersquos delight 95 year old Lt Col Eldridge Williams was on hand to sign autographs and talk about his experiences as a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen (The Red Tails)

The event car show was hosted by

the Benefit Car Shows Group (wwwbenefitcarshowscom) and the musical portion by the South Florida Blue Grass

Association Over 50 volunteers members of the Civil Air Patrol and other organizations helped

The DUB Show Tour arrived to the Miami Beach Convention Center May of this year This car show is one of the most energetic gatherings of vehicles products and entertainment you will ever see under one roof

This multipurpose vehicle would be driven to work and to the grocery store during the week It was also used to go to the drive-in theater followed by a burger and a shake at the local diner on the weekends

On a sunny 4th of July holiday in Florida he found his dream car at a car show in Miami Springs

The next day he purchased the vehicle and has had it ever since

After owning the car for several years and enjoying many cruises and car shows the

car fever bug struck him again

This time ldquoOzzyrdquo wanted the full experience of building his own hot rod He chose a 1955 second generation GMC

pickup truck he currently owned and used as a daily driver The build took him two years after

some set backs he finally got it just the way he wanted

The color choice was yellow to match the other hot rod and give the vehicle a nostalgic look

A staggered tire wheel combination was used 17 inches in the front and 18 inches in the rear cragar SS plus a custom suspension with disc breaks

Giving it a hot rod stance the truck has an assortment of modifications including power

steering power windows power brakes vintage air conditioning and a back up camera to avoid hitting any objects It also has an electric bed cover

The custom interior is accented with leather seats door panels new gauges and a tilt

steering Column

The heart of this truck is a tuned port Chevy 350 corvette motor with an automatic overdrive

transmission and lots of chrome under the hood

This truck has the modern technology that keeps it safe out on the modern day street but at the same time it maintains its classic look

This fortunate owner has spent

countless hours and loads of money creating that one-of-a-kind ride

The ldquoto do listrdquo on one of these projects is endless specially when everything is customized to the ownerrsquos taste There will be plenty of times when these projects get the best of you Although it is also very rewarding when things start to come together and you accomplish re-engineering marvels in that one-of-a-kind vehicle

Preston Tucker

A man with ideas ahead of his time In present day Irsquod say he was a time traveler a term recently used meaning a person that can travel to the future as well as the past you remember that movie ldquoBack to the futurerdquo with the Delorean that is the idea

The Tucker Torpedo a car that was filled with innovations that are now a part of our normal daily driven vehicles Letrsquos go back in the time machine to 1948

Tucker further envisioned added innovations to the car But due to high cost in development and other problems they were never implemented

Tucker also promised a 150 horse power engine After much development he settled on the O-335 Aircraft Engine This was an air cooled engine which had to be converted to water cooled The engine developed 166 hp which was more than adequate for its use The engine was mated to the Tucker Y-1 transmission

The car proved to be road worthy and very safe for its time One of the Tucker prototypes was rolled in a test run at 95 mph

The Tucker 48 was a the dream of Preston Tucker He wanted to build a safe car that was affordable and full of innovations

After landing government funds and innovative business dealings he got the money he needed to begin the project Preston Tucker managed to acquire an old aircraft plant in Chicago Illinois There he began to build the famous Tucker 48 He lured car designer Alex Tremulis to help with the carrsquos design

Tucker priority was to build the safest car on the road He began with some innovations that were ahead of their time This made the Big Three Auto Makers General Motors Ford and Chrysler take notice

The new features Tucker wanted were

walk away from the crash with only some minor bruises After the change of a damaged tire the car was able to drive away Tuckers were also tested for 18 hour runs at the Indianapolis International Speedway The tests proved the car to be safe tough and reliable

Investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the US Justice Department into Preston Tuckerrsquos business dealings led to the Tucker 48rsquos demise Though Tucker was acquitted of any wrong doing the damage had already been done Public perception had been tarnished

Some say that the Big Three had something to do with Tuckerrsquos down fall It would have cost millions of dollars for the Big Three to compete with ldquoThe Tuckerrdquo After all they were the top dogs on the block Who was this guy Tucker coming in and setting new standards in automotive safety and design People would think that GM Ford and Chrysler didnrsquot care about building safe automobiles

Preston Tucker managed to build 51 Tucker 48s before the company closed in 1949 Today these Tucker 48s are extremely collectable if you can afford one The last Tucker 48 sold at auction in 2012

That one sold for over $29 million dollars

So where can you go see an actual real Tucker Well it so happens that we are fortunate enough to have one right here in Florida The Tallahassee Automobile Museum has a Tucker 48 on display This green Tucker 48 was the car used in the movie ldquoTucker A Man And His Dreamrdquo

According to the museum the Tucker was purchased sometime before 1995 by museum founder Devoe L Moore He also purchased the Studebaker that was made to look like a Tucker for the Movie The Tucker look-a-like was used as a stunt double This car is the one that rolls over during a test run at the Indianapolis International Speedway Rolling a real Tucker was just out of the question
