French Vintage Vie, is adding some chic French style to homes by sourcing original antique furniture and vintage home decor from France. Founder Louise Scott, opened a pop up shop last year and due to its popularity she has since been on a number of buying trips to Toulouse, Paris, Beziers, Avignon and L’Isle sur la Sorgue with a customer shopping list. Speaking about the motivation behind her business venture, Louise said: “France has such

h an amazing wealth of wonderful furniture and collectables that you just can’t buy here. From grand Louis style chairs and ornate wood and marble tables to irresistible vintage treasures such as worn shutters and enamel jugs”. Louise continues, “Sourcing by hand at antique fairs and brocantes means that my customers end up with a piece which is authentically French, has a story to tell and is truly unique. So many people are looking for something different these days, a few one-off antique or vintage pieces that they can mix with their contemporary furnishings to give their interiors an edge”. Louise also sources for business customers including interior designers, hotels, restaurants, bars and unusual venues.

MAURIZ IO PELL IZ ZONIInterior architect Maurizio Pellizzoni has design in his DNA. It’s no surprise, as he grew up near Lake Comoand comes from a family who work in the business. Since founding his consultancy MPD London seven years ago, he has applied his Italian appreciation of style and design to a range of residential and commercial projects.

Based in the Chelsea Design Quarter, MPD London has many of Europe’s best suppliers and services on its doorstep.

and all the sofas, was custom-made by MPD. Maurizio themes each bedroom around an existing antique piece, and extended the effortless comfort of the living rooms to two outdoor terraces.

A former Ralph Lauren staffer Maurizio has a passion for design that is infectious and a eye for merging colour and texture. We caught up with the designer to discuss inspriation and his recent project in Surrey Hills.

In a recent project MPD London collaborated with an architect to renovate from scratch a 10,000m2 family mansion in the Home Counties.

The brief was to recreate The Hamptons in the Surrey Hills, and Maurizio set about creating an upscale ‘American look’ that incorporated the owners’ many personal antiques and objets d’art. All the artworks were reframed for consistency and around 20 per cent of the furniture, including the kitchen, the balustrade in the hallway

ISSUE No 12INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY 32WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR CAREER IN INTERIORS?

Since I was little I have always been passionate about design and interiors. My passion for luxury and great interiors is most probably the driving force for my career.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO CLIENTS?

Personal approach; each project is tailored made to the client, and how they want the interior to be. I always try to understand how they want to live and use the space. Its is important for me not to impose my style or ideas. During the design process all the client comments/ideas evolve to become the final design.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN?

I have always admired Frank Lloyd Wright, his work has been a great inspiration. When I moved to London I started to work for Ralph Lauren which clearly became my inspiration for the luxury end products. I believe his approach to lifestyle and attention to details has been the most influential thing in helping me become the designer I am today. I am also inspired by movies and fashion.

Page 35: ROCO Issue 12 Spring

ISSUE No 12INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY 35

WHAT WAS THE BRIEF BEHIND YOUR RECENT SURREY HILL PROJECT?

The main client requirement was to use some of the furniture, antiques and accessories they own from their previous home. To me these where also part of the family history and it was important to incorporate them into the design of the house.

During the design process we allocated each piece to a room and used them as the inspiration for the space. The main project brief was to create a comfortable family home, a place for them to enjoy every day life.

WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING WITH THE FINAL DESIGN?

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was to incorporate in the house all of the clients own furniture, antiques and accessories. This was most probably the biggest task, as we had to photograph and file each piece before they were sent to storage. To start with we created a catalogue with all of these pieces which was used during the design process. Most of the soft furniture was re-upholstered and we had to re-frame some of the artwork to incorporate them into the final scheme.

The most rewarding aspect of the project, was to be able to see all the client pieces beautifully incorporated.

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED WHEN IT CAME TO INTERIOR DESIGN?

To follow my instinct and my ideas. Being a designer this can be hard, sometimes it would be easier to just follow the trend and what everyone else is doing. I never wanted to be like everyone and started my own company because of my passion for design. This passion means I put my all into each project, which is not always easy as it takes time and patience.

MAURIZIO'S TOP FIVE INSIDER DECORATING TIPS

1. Look at the space and understand the use of the room before starting any design.

2. Listen to the clients ideas and work with them to achieve the final design.

3. Try to use innovative ideas.

4. Don’t be afraid to use colours/materials as this will make the room look luxurious and unique.

5. Accessories, artwork and fresh flowers are fundamental as the final layer of each room.

Just because you have a house in the countryside, it doesn’t mean you have to have floral or chintzy everywhere, for all my work I like to add rich colours and luxury fabrics.

years worked at a respected design practice in Chelsea and Fulham. She has a wealth of knowledge in luxury residential design projects in central London and Surrey.

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS?

As a designer I enjoy creating a space that brings out an emotional response. When you have planned for a long time and every design element comes together, being an interior designer is the best job in the world.

Stephen Clasper Interiors are luxury interior designers and bespoke furniture makers based in Surrey. We talk with Sun Kyung Jones their senior designer.

Born in South Korea, Sun was educated at Chelsea College of Art & Design and Kingston University, and has degrees in Interior Design and Architecture. After ten years in exhibition design for blue-chip companies she made the transition to high-end residential interior design, and for seven

I always make sure I visit sites as often as possible, check every sample (feel the touch), and check all the dimensions and quality.

Stephen Clasper Interiors approach is to show how we can improve the client’s brief. This means going on a journey with the client to create their dream house.

We are the instrument for making a space that the client enjoys living in.

Page 42: ROCO Issue 12 Spring

ISSUE No 12 42INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN?

I always admire a design that has lasted the test of time, iconic paintings or books where we can find images of timeless beauty.

I visited the showroom of Alberto Pinto in Paris. He managed to stay modern and relevant throughout his career; I also admire Eileen Gray, her ability to create a design of furniture and fitting to fit any modern house.

HOW DID YOU APPROACH YOUR RECENT REFURBISHMENT PROJECT IN KENSINGTON?

Any refurbishment of an existing house is difficult because we don’t always know how the house was originally constructed or been refurbished in the past.

We always try to retain the main architectural features of the house and try to enhance or introduce new features if possible.

I try to design the house so that it is fit for our modern style of living.

WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING WITH THE FINAL DESIGN?

It is difficult to envisage how

everything would turn out. There were a lot of obstacles that we needed to overcome. For example, how the joinery would fit and ensuring that the quality of the finish is as high as possible. I think we have to go through these challenges to achieve the final reward.

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED WHEN IT CAME TO INTERIOR DESIGN?

You should always follow your instinct when it comes to design choices.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE INSIDER DESIGNER TIPS?

1. Strip out everything and place only the things that are important for the space.

2. Walk around the space and visualise the plan.

3. Always have a clear concept in mind throughout the process of the design.

4. Keep your colour palette small.

5. Try to get emotional value out of your space. Bring out some drama.

into three large bedrooms, one dressing room and two bathrooms.

In the bedroom to the rear of the property we used the roof space (my current office) to create a high floor to ceiling area.

In my home I love to collect old vintage shop sign letters that I use as wall art to create words and messages. I attend design fairs and recently purchased an original Charles and Ray Eames rocking chair.

I am passionate about Art and I love to go to exhibitions and museums. I often buy prints of things I like which I frame. Above my bed there is a pillowcase with JE T’AIME stitched in the middle, which I bought at the Tate Modern after the Louise Bourgeois exhibition in 1997. I have also got a Damian Hirst medicine cabinet poster.

My kitchen comes from Chalon. I love the colours of grey and taupe along with the inside of the cabinets in a dark mahogany wood.

Neutral colours have been used throughout the home on the floors, walls and sofas. I then like to use splashes of bright colors with objects and small

pieces of furniture, fabrics, art etc.

In my office, I have dressed my couch with a throw that used to belong to my grandmother in Morocco – it must be at least 100 years old and it’s colors are so authentic and vibrant.

Recently I have fallen in love with Estelle Stephens paintings. What I like about her art is that she uses very big canvases. Another artist who has caught my attention is Sonia Fitoussi. A photographer who captures London, she has a very good eye for humor and all things British. I have used a collection of her work to dress one of my walls in the corridor.

Interior design has always been a passion. When I was 12 I was already busy stitching cushions and framing posters for my bedroom.

I did my first project in Hampstead in 1997. It was a garden flat with fantastic proportions and extraordinary light. Another project was in Paris in 2001. Here I particularly excelled in the bathroom design where I used Moroccan concrete tiles and zelliges tiles.

I trained at KLC school of interior design in 2008 – 2009,

When we bought the house it already had a loft and a basement. We undertook major structural work especially on the ground floor where we knocked all existing walls and extended the house to the right to create a large open plan living space.

In the basement we dug further and added an external staircase from the street with the idea of turning the basement into a self-contained flat if need be.

On the first floor we completely reshaped the rooms and turned what was four small rooms and two bathrooms

They say three is a crowd, but when it comes to the Hans J. Wegner CH07 Lounge Chair, it's the perfect number. This unique 3-legged chair is a beautiful example of classic minimalist scandinavian design. VOGA's meticulously-made reproduction is as stylish and elegant as the original. The frame of the chair and three legs are carved from a choice of oak or walnut. The lightly padded seat and backrest is upholstered in semi-aniline leather, which is more resistant to stains than aniline leather. We adore this chair and best of all a choice of colours is available for the leather.

IKEA THE JOY OF STORAGE

How much dead space do you have around your house? If you haven’t heard of this phrase before, it is basically space that is not being used, a phrase that IKEA uses to show us that every inch of space can be utilised to give us all a better life at home.

Here, Mea McIlroy from IKEA Belfast gives ROCO some tips on how to turn space into storage, and throughout the UK & Ireland, IKEA stores will be holding the IDEAS Festival

Simple ideas include splitting our drawers with dividers to keep everything neat, or making the most out of wardrobe space to utilise every inch. The PAX wardrobes with KOMPLEMENT interior fittings are simply genius and can be customised to fit your every need. Pull out rails can be included, alongside a velvet soft jewellery drawer, while your shoes get the royal treatment with individual shoe boxes and pull out rails. The possibilities are endless.

RIBBA photo frame ledge, £7.90

this Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th March to share more ideas and inspiration on how to add creative storage to your home to achieve organisational nirvana.

“There are two main rooms in the home that require essential storage – the bathroom and the bedroom. They are the rooms that are used most in the morning and the evening, and are essential to getting ready for the day and winding down at the end of the day.

Page 80: ROCO Issue 12 Spring

In the bathroom, we often forget about the space under the wash basin – simply add a cabinet and you have ample storage space to hide away your essentials. If you need a mirror, double up the functionality and get one with a cabinet too, and don’t forget about mobile trollies that are super stylish and can be pushed about the surface to wherever you need them.

Try “hacking” some of IKEA’s products to make them multifunctional; SKURAR plant pots could house your make up brush collection, or the RIBBA photo frame ledge could handily line up your nail polishes to make a beautiful display.

Finally, use that narrow bit of wall space to build in more basket storage to your bathroom with the ALGOT upright wall basket system (a pinch at only £22.50) that can be customised to fit your needs.”

For more information on the Joy of Storage IDEAS Festival, check www.ikea.co.uk for your local store’s plans, and to book into workshops.

Hally's was opened in June 2013 by Anna Halliday and husband Philip Beatty who wanted to bring simple, innovative food to Parson's Green in a laid-back environment.

They spotted the potential in a derelict cocktail bar just off Parsons Green, bought the lease, stripped it out completely and remodeled it like a Californian beach house - complete with reclaimed wood floors, pastel dipped chairs, white clapboarding and neon
