Join us next summer for a new annual institute location – Victoria. Although we have held annual institutes in Vancouver four times since 1983, we have never journeyed across the straits to British Columbia’s capital.

Situated on Vancouver Island, Victoria was established in 1843 by the Hudson’s Bay Company and incorporated as a city in 1862. It is the oldest city in the Pacific Northwest. Tucked against the mainland coast of British Columbia and the north shore of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island occupies an area about the size of Holland. Victoria is known for having the mildest climate in Canada, where gardens bloom year-round. The city is easily explored on foot, and with 48 regional, provincial, and federal parks in Greater Victoria, it is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Institute opens with the General Session on Thursday morning. That afternoon and for the remainder of the conference, attendees can choose among the Mining, Oil & Gas, Water, Public Lands, Environmental, International, and Landman’s Sections. The program adjourns on Saturday at noon. Our annual Young Professionals Reception will take place on Wednesday evening, and we welcome all registrants and their families at the traditional Thursday evening reception.

Highly discounted hotel rooms are blocked at eight nearby properties, although two are already sold out. See inside for complete information. We encourage you to make your hotel reservations promptly.

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or run into any problems reserving rooms. We look forward to seeing you there!

What can my family do in Victoria and on Vancouver Island? • Click here (http://tinyurl.com/rmvic6) for a cool summary of things to do for kids (and adults) of all ages.• Visit Butchart Gardens, a wonderland of botanical joy. Night illumination brings a magical glow to the shrubs, trees, and flower

beds through the 55-acre park, open until 10 p.m. every day. The daily open-air Concert Lawn Stage brings in a variety of performing artists, and every Saturday night explodes with a dazzling fireworks display. Kids are welcome, and the Gardens provide numerous activities for your enjoyment, including eco-friendly boat tours.

• Tour the Royal B.C. Museum, with more than seven million artifacts and specimens related to the natural history of British Columbia and the cultures of its inhabitants. The First Peoples Gallery is one of the most dramatic presentations of First Nations culture, art, and history in the world.

• For the kids, the Island offers the Bug Zoo, Miniature World, zipline adventures, ghost walks, IMAX Victoria, carriage tours, the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, and Fisherman’s Wharf – with homes that float and great fish & chips places to eat.

• Take a tour of the Parliament Building, and note that the government and opposition benches are two-and-a-half sword lengths apart, just in case a duel breaks out.

• Embark on an epic whale-watching adventure from Fisherman’s Wharf through Juan de Fuca Strait and the San Juan Islands with our preferred vendor, Eagle Wing Tours, or another sea-faring company. See whales up close – there are three resident pods of orcas off the coast, along with sea otters, seals, sea lions, and regular sightings of bald eagles, falcons, osprey, and cormorants.

• Victoria is home to several championship golf courses, many of which offer sweeping ocean, mountain, and forest vistas. A 36-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed course is ranked one of the best in British Columbia.

• Step on board the Victoria Harbour Ferry, the only water taxi service in the neighborhood. Shopping, dining, sightseeing stops, and tours are available throughout the day all around the Harbour. Hop on a boat to start your Pickle Pub Crawl, and learn why Victoria is called the beer capital of Canada.

• The Greater Victoria area is home to more than 60 parks with hiking trails from easy and accessible to more difficult. Hike to the summit of Mount Douglas, with spectacular views of Victoria, rural Saanich, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountains in Washington State.

• As Canada’s cycling capital, two-wheel touring is second to none in Victoria. The Galloping Goose Trail, built on an abandoned railway line, is a 44-mile multi-use path that will take you from the urban core to the south island’s pastoral countryside and wild West Coast. This Trail is the first section of the Trans-Canada Trail. Start your post-conference journey here!

• Stop by Fan Tan Alley, the oldest Chinatown in Canada. A former gambling district, it is now the narrowest commercial street in North America.

• Spend some time at the Robert Bateman Gallery, to peruse the works of one of Canada’s most celebrated artists and naturalists.

• Take afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel, which has served high tea for 108 years, and now serves up 750,000 cups annually.• Charter or rent a boat and go fishing out of the Inner Harbour, or sail away to scenic bays and inlets of the Gulf Islands and the

National Park Reserve.• Kayak, paddleboard, and canoe in the Inner Harbour area and beyond, with breathtaking backdrops.• Beaches abound in Victoria, with picnic areas and adjoining hiking trails. Some have shallow and protected waters, perfect for

a family outing.• Hop on a seaplane flight for a scenic tour.• Visit the communities of Sooke, Oak Bay, Saanich, Brentwood Bay, and Sidney, all within a short drive of Victoria, each with its

own special flavor, and a number of local farms and wineries.• If you are renting a car and planning to explore the island after the conference, be sure to check out the Pacific Marine Circle

Route at http://tinyurl.com/rmvic7. For organized tours and adventure experiences recommended on TripAdvisor, visit http://tinyurl.com/rmvic8.
