2015 – 2016 Governor’s Message
Jon Mangino
"You've got to think about big things while you're doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction."
— Alvin Toffle
Happy New Year, Kiwanians!
Several members of your RMD Leadership Team recently completed a strategic planning weekend in Los Angeles. Led by our dynamic President-Elect Jane Erickson, the session focused on the Kiwanis iPlan. The iPlan encompasses four strategic areas - Inspiration, Investment, Impact & Image - that will help strengthen our clubs and district. By developing strategies with these four areas of focus in mind, we are ensuring that Kiwanis will be around for the next century of service.
The iPlan is just one of the topics we’ll be spending time on at our upcoming Mid-Winter/Spring Training Conference. We have several interesting forums planned. New this year will be an informative Treasurer’s Roundtable. Come and learn best practices and share tips with some of our dedicated money men and women. Our keynote speaker for the Saturday Interclub Luncheon will be former Denver Bronco Randy Gradishar. Our Kiwanis International Trustee Terry White will be joining us. Finally, to cap off a fun day, area Stars of Tomorrow qualifiers will be the entertainment at Governor Plank’s Awards Dinner. I hope to see many of you in Fort Collins on March 12. I’m excited for the opportunity for us all to come together!
It’s an exciting time to be a Kiwanian! It seems like there is more and more investment from Kiwanis International in tools and initiatives designed to help our clubs thrive. It will take some thinking, planning and maybe even some change on our parts, but imagine the end result! I’m ready to give it a shot and I hope you are too.
Thanks for all you do!
Jon

Our second RMD Key Leader event, at Roundup River Ranch near Gypsum, Colorado was full with over 60 students who kept their energy going even as the night time temperatures were very frosty. The 11 degrees didn’t keep our Key Clubbers from laying on the ground to watch a spectacular meteor shower and see more stars than you can ever see in the city. As always, the Roundup River Camp is beautiful and the food was great too. Key Leader is a weekend of personal growth for all of the students.
One student wrote “I really realized just how important it is to be a leader for not only myself but for others as well.”
Mark your calendars now! Our dates for this coming fall are:
October 14-16, 2016 Roundup River Ranch, Gypsum, CO October 21-23, 2016 Windy Peak, Bailey, CO.

Did you know RMD Kiwanis has a Facebook page?
Anyone can post their club photos and share their
story. www.facebook.com/RMDKiwanis
Perhaps the most wonderful thing about our Kiwanis family is its genuine dedication to serving the
children of the world. There is nothing that better embodies the Kiwanian mission then the ELIMinate
project. Witnessing the bond broken between a mother and her child in the face of the deadly yet
preventable disease of tetanus is the driving force of the $110 million we have been able to raise. We as
an organization, in partnership with UNICEF, are changing the world. We are closer than ever to the
complete eradication of this disease. To me, there is no one better for the job. As done with the successful
efforts of Kiwanis to rid the world of IDD, the k-family is making strides and will soon do their part protect
and nurture each and every mother and baby relationship across the world.
.
We have set our District Eliminate goal at $25,200, which we must meet by April at our District
Convention. I am proud to announce the launch of what we are calling the E.L.I.M.I.N.A.T.E initiative,
where each month from September to April will be assigned a theme and a specificity that will allow
us to streamline our efforts towards the Eliminate project. The Rocky Mountain District has the
potential to make a huge impact on the world and its efforts to Eliminate this disease. But the truth
of the matter is, that our efforts will be most powerful if we work together as a Kiwanis family.
I challenge the Kiwanians of our District to help more mothers and babies than we’ve ever been able
to before. 32% of the Kiwanis Clubs in the District are currently not participating in the Eliminate
Project. We need the efforts of each and every one of you to be successful. You have supported
through all of our others endeavors and is my hope that you will stand by us in this as well.
Through a strong partnership between every branch of the K family our potential becomes limitless.
Together we could make an even more significant donation. Kiwanis clubs can bridge the gap to their
SLP’s and weave together their efforts and make both clubs their strongest. It is important to ask
ourselves, even with our incredible success, what else we can be doing to further help the children
of the world.
Key Club international has fully adopted the
Eliminate Project and has worked nonstop to
do their part against maternal and neonatal
tetanus. At our International Convention in
2015, we pledged another 3 million towards
the project, and it is our full intention as the
Rocky Mountain District to make a
contribution to this pledge.
We have set our District
Eliminate goal at $25,200,
which we must meet by April
at our District Convention
Hello RMD Kiwanis Members! Circle K International (CKI) will once again be hosting the RMD CKI District Convention alongside your Spring Training Conference. Like Baseball Spring Training, the dates are March 11th-12th at the Fort Collins Hilton. We are very excited to bring CKI members together to learn more about CKI, Kiwanis, receive training and have some fun. This year we will be joined by members of two new clubs: CSU-Pueblo and Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs! We invite you to stop by the Legends Room at the Hilton Hotel any time during the conference and join in on the fun. We love it when Kiwanians join us for sessions. CKI members will also be joining you at the Fort Collins Brewery Social and the Interclub Luncheon- we will be sure to say hello! Events like our District Convention wouldn’t be possible without support from Kiwanis Clubs across the District. “Lucky 7” is a program that encourages Kiwanis Clubs to donate to CKI to support scholarships and financial support for members to attend conventions and conferences. Clubs that donate $177 or more will receive a Banner Patch at the Spring Training Conference Interclub Luncheon. If you or your club would like to help sponsor members to attend the convention you can do so through our Lucky 7 program. Thank you to all Kiwanis Clubs that have already donated this past year. We are truly appreciative of the time, money and effort you donate to help us be successful. For more information see www.rmdcki.org/lucky-7.com

ROCKY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOUNDATION
From October 1, 2015 thru March 30, 2016, seven additional grants have been approved for a total of $11,050.
The RMD Foundation Board is proud to continue our support of the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Colorado, Ronald McDonald House of Denver, and the Rose Hill Hospitality House in Grand Junction. The Foundation Board is very pleased to support these 3 houses
that provide a “home away from home” for many families facing stressful and often traumatic life circumstances. Through the RMD Foundation we invested $28,840 during the 2014-2015 calendar year. Each of us should be very proud of the difference we are making in communities all over the Rocky Mountain District.
Through the Rocky Mountain District Foundation and your generosity, great things are happening for children. Please continue to remember the RMD Foundation in your giving. I invite you to visit the Foundation webpage at www.RMDKF.com.
Mid-Winter Conference “Spring Training” is March 11 – 13, 2016. Please mark your calendars
and plan to attend to learn more about the District Foundation’s mission and purpose. Best
of all, it is a time for sharing, having fun and building relationships. I look forward to seeing you there.
Dear Fellow Kiwanian Member of the Rocky Mountain District Foundation,
Your Rocky Mountain District Foundation continues to financially support the work you are doing to improve your communities and the lives of children and their families throughout our great Kiwanis District. During the Kiwanis calendar year 2014-2015 the Foundation Board funded 10 grants totaling $21,900. The Foundation Grant Committee,
under the leadership of Marti Walker, reviewed, analyzed and recommended the grants awards. The board working on behalf of the
RMD Kiwanis membership, funded grants to the Kiwanis Clubs of Manitou Springs, Worland, Lakewood, Boulder, Denver Tech Center, Pueblo, Alamosa, Trinidad, Ute Pass, and Scottsbluff. This is a good representation of clubs throughout the Rocky Mountain District.

Thank you for sharing the Kiwanis Experience!
LeAnn
For those who do not know me, I'm Ashley Lauwereins, a member of the Fort Collins Eyeopeners Kiwanis
Club, and RMD’s representative to Kiwanis International Foundation. What exactly does that all entail? It
means that my work as a Kiwanian goes just a little bit further, and that I get to learn even more about
what the Kiwanis International Foundation is and what it can do for our district. I personally feel that the
work we do as Kiwanians in the Rocky Mountain District is some of the best work in the world - we are all
passionate about making our communities even better for the children living there. I’m so honored that I
get to represent each and every one of you.
The Kiwanis International Foundation (or KIF for short) helps you extend your Kiwanis impact. When
you give a gift to KIF your money goes to clubs just like yours, hoping to make an even bigger impact with
matching funds from KIF to truly impact children in their communities. We even have clubs in the Rocky
Mountain District who have received grants from KIF.
Less well-known, KIF helps those who have been struck by natural disaster, sending money relief to Kiwanis
Clubs in that area to help revitalize the communities that are going through a hardship.
As the Eliminate Campaign comes to a close, I ask you to turn your attention to the grants programs and
disaster relief programs KIF provides through the Children’s Fund. When you donate to the Children's Fund
for KIF it allows your club to generously help other Kiwanis Clubs extend the impact in their communities.
Even better - if your club is looking for a grant to extend your impact, know that you can receive a grant
from KIF thanks to the generosity of the other Kiwanis Clubs worldwide. In addition, as a district we receive
a portion of your donation back to our district foundation for sponsorships to our Key Club and CKI
chapters.
I am so honored to represent KIF because I truly believe that it extends the great work that we are doing as
Kiwanians. As you look for ways to contribute and make an impact worldwide, consider donating to the
Children's Fund and KIF through the Skip a Meal program, by becoming a Today Club, or by honoring a
member of your club with a George F. Hixson Fellowship award.
If you have any questions about any of these programs, don’t hesitate to contact me. I love talking to
passionate Kiwanians about how they make a difference in their community and sharing thoughts and
ideas.
Warm wishes,
Ashley
Hello fellow Rocky Mountain District Kiwanians
Over the last five years we have united for the Eliminate project, a partnership
with UNICEF to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, and what a great job
we've done. We as a district have saved over 300,000 mothers and their babies
by contributing $524,428 towards the final goal. But during this time our work as
Kiwanians in our communities hasn't slowed; we've continued to contribute our
money and time into those projects that truly make our district a better place.

Most members and their spouses were in attendance. The atmosphere was festive, the Castle being decorat-
ed for the holidays, complete with twenty-one Christmas Trees throughout. The entire Castle was open for
touring for the evening. Appetizers and Dinner were fabulous Castle recipes and traditional warm bread
pudding was served for dessert. The Colorado College Acapella Choir, Room 46, provided the entertainment.
The Manitou Kiwanis ‘Not Ready for Prime-Time Players’ also made an appearance.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS KIWANIS CLUB assist with the relocation and installation of a “round pin” that will be used in Windwalkers Equine Therapy Program. The Glenwood Club has been holding work days at Windwalkers for the last eight years. They generally have three or four workdays a year. Some of the projects completed include finishing an indoor bathroom in the office area, painting, fence building and repair, landscaping and various other projects that need to be done.
WindWalkers Equine Therapy works with a variety of clients including special needs youth, at risk youth, abuse youth and traumatized youth. The ranch provides a secured and safe environment that allows for the optimal interactions between horse and patient. The most important part of the process is bridging the horse from his way of thinking (emotional) to our way of thinking (logical), but at the same time, not changing his personality.

Each year, the Lighter Side of Christmas Committee chooses a recipient for the parade fundraising effort. The Ute Pass Kiwanis is the recipient for 2015!
The Kiwanis Club of Greeley hosted a Christmas party
for over 90 students from Madison school. The children enjoyed a pizza lunch and a visit with Santa Claus who gave each one a bag of gifts.
The Key Clubs from Greeley Central, University, Eaton, and Frontier came along to help with the party. Members from the Kiwanis club of the Rockies were there to assist with the fun time.

During the first three months of the Kiwanis year, (October-December), the Rocky Mountain District boasts 53 new members. You are proving that you love Kiwanis and believe in the future of our organization, by sharing with others all that is right with Kiwanis.
Every club in the Rocky Mountain District benefits from having a Membership Plan. A well thought out plan, led by a dedicated Membership Chair and Committee who are enthusiastic about sharing the Kiwanis story. The Kiwanis International website has many great ideas for strengthening your club. Contest. Contest. Contest.
The Rocky Mountain District is sponsoring a Membership Contest. The TOP FOUR Kiwanis Clubs with the greatest net positive growth will each receive $500 to be used for their members to attend the Rocky Mountain District Convention this August in Pueblo, Colorado. The contest is based upon the net positive growth of Kiwanis Clubs from October 1, 2015-June 30, 2016. Award recipients will be recognized at the Rocky Mountain District Convention.
Kiwanis International believes in rewarding Kiwanians for sharing our love of Kiwanis. Go to www.kiwanis.org to learn about the Club Strengthening Awards. There are two: Gift of Kiwanis Award for the member and Impact Circle for the club. Mid-Winter Conference. Mid-Winter Conference. Mid-Winter Conference
This year’s Mid-Winter Conference has the theme “Spring Training” and promises to be one of the BEST Mid-Winter Conferences in the history of the Rocky Mountain District. Governor Jon Mangino and Governor-elect Kathy Lee are working hard to make this Mid-Winter Convention fun, educational and a great time to learn and share with other Kiwanians. I’m proud that the Formula has several forums. Join us and learn how you can be the difference in your club and division. Consider joining the Formula Team by becoming a Club Counselor or a Club Opener. The Formula Team plans to announce two new Kiwanis Clubs at Mid-Winter! Kiwanians. Kiwanians. Kiwanians.
Really great things are happening in the Rocky Mountain District. We have much to be proud of. Each new Kiwanis member you share the Kiwanis story with will be given the gift of experiencing the smiles on the faces of children, as they hold their first book, or teaching children how to keep safe, or helping to build a child's self-confidence and leadership skills. Many children are safer, healthier and loved because we work to nurture and love them. Thank you for being the difference! LeAnn Zetmeir Formula Chair
