Hi all,

From home to home, heart to heart and one place to another…let the spirit and warmth of the Holiday season bring us closer to each other. Happy Holidays!

There are some changes you will see starting with our December newsletter. You will no longer see the term “transportation fee” listed in the description of activities

and/or events or other places throughout the newsletter. We do not have a fee solely for transportation. This new terminology will in no way change the way we do things,

just what we call it. The term “transportation fee” does not, nor has it ever, applied to any activity and/or event that we have provided. The fee that has been applied to trip

activities and/or events has been calculated based on a number of financial considerations. The fee can include an entrance fee, bus rental costs, insurance, gas pricing,

parking expense, ticket pricing etc. So, we have decided to call this an “activity fee” as it is all encompassing for the financial expense to provide the activity and/or event.

Should you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to talk with me about it.

The Center will be closed Monday December 24th and

Tuesday the 25th in observance of the holiday. The staff and I wish you a very good holiday season!

We will be closing at 2pm on Monday, December 31 in

observance of the coming of the New Year! We will have game playing all day until 2:00 PM and the Center will provide pizza and punch at noon! Our hope is that you will

stop by with an appetizer and join us in welcoming the New Year at noon; then you can go out and do it again at

midnight! Please be sure to sign up for this event so we know how many to expect. ~Terry

With the 20th Anniversary of the Craft Show now in the past, our Volunteers of the Month are all of you – The Craft Show Volunteers. Can you believe that it all started more than 20 years ago? Some of you may wonder about how the show actually started. The show formally began back in 1992 at the old Senior Center on 3rd Street, but it is believed that the show’s roots date back as early as 1988 when the Craft & Bake Sale event was happening when the Center met in a church basement. The Bake Sale has been a big part of the show for years and by 1990 the Center had put out its first cookbook. We do have some of the best bakers in the world!! Beginning in 1998 the show was held in this current Senior Center location. There were about 20 vendors and they filled the Center and Panorama Hall. The show moved to Kirk Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in 2005, and had about 35 vendors. The next year it moved to the Event Center with about 60 vendors. This year we had over 85 craft vendors and 20 non-craft vendors! The continued growth and success of the show is all because of you. Thank you to ALL the VOLUNTEERS who have made this year’s show the success that it is!!! Over 100 volunteers helped on the day before and day of the show. We had 40+ people help with the crafts that were sold at the Craft Booth; more than 75 bakers created the wonderful items sold at the Bake Sale. We had an overwhelming response to the donations for both the Silent Auction and Grandma’s Attic. The total volunteer hours for the show have not been tabulated at this time, but just to give you an idea, last year over 1200 volunteer hours were recorded just during the week of the Craft Show. This is our largest fundraiser for the Center and it is only made possible by YOU, our generous and giving volunteers.

"Walk like a penguin." Why am I talking about this

flightless bird? Walking like a penguin is a safety tip for walking on slippery surfaces during winter.

Starting with flat shoes with soles that have treads and are not smooth, point your feet slightly out, as this increases your stability. Take short, shuffle-like steps. Keep your hands out

of your pockets and at your sides; this way they help maintain your center of balance. Bulky jackets can help offer padding if you do slip. In Colorado we often

have sunshine soon after snow to help with quick melting, but be suspicious of any dark, especially shiny areas, as this could be slippery. And most importantly, concentrate on where you are walking and doing the penguin shuffle!

Achoo! We are staying indoors more and that means we are great at

spreading cold and flu viruses to each other. These nasty little organisms need a way to enter your body, so I think we have all heard the best way to reduce that....washing your hands: 20 seconds with warm water, soap

and friction is the best. One chorus and verse of Yankee Doodle Dandy is about 20 seconds....try singing it some time while you are sudsing up. A

dime size amount of waterless hand cleaner will work when no water is available when rubbed until completely gone ( no waving your hands in

the air to help them dry!). Keeping your hands out of your eyes and mouth will prevent any hitchhikers

you have picked up from catching a ride with you. If you are starting to get a scratchy throat, or feel not quite well, the best gift you can give to your

friends is to stay home. Did you know that a sneeze can project large drop-lets for 2-3 feet?(and that you can't sneeze with your eyes open?) Sneezing or coughing into your elbow rather than your hands is a better way to con-

tain particles and reduce passing them around. And if you put off getting your flu shot, do it today to help give your immune system some help in

fighting off the flu. Colorado winters are beautiful with our white pristine snow that melts

quickly (remember this is written by someone who grew up in Northern Wisconsin where the snow doesn't start melting until March), but snow means cold and ice is slippery! We can all make it

through another winter healthy and happy if we pay attention to what Mother Nature is sending our way. Have a safe and healthy Holiday Season!

What is Foot Reflexology? Reflexology is a holistic natural therapy that works on the principle that energy balance will lead to increased vitality and

greater enjoyment of life.

How does it work? The therapist uses thumbs and fingertips to press special points of the sole and back of the foot. This special pressing stimulates the meridians (energy pathways) to flow. Even though you are busy with the holidays, sometimes just the best thing is to sit down, relax and “pick up the needles for others.” There is yarn for you to use and to make your projects at home or at our weekly 1:00 PM Wednesday meetings.

This exhibit has received rave reviews about the ancient Roman city. What nature destroyed, it also preserved.

Hundreds of exceptional artifacts offer an insider's glimpse into the daily life -- and tragic end -- of Pompeii, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

The Activity Fee of $29 for members ($32 for non-members) includes entrance to the museum, timed

entrance into the Pompeii exhibit, and an audio self-guided tour of the exhibit. Lunch will be on your own in the T-Rex Café at the museum. Because of a

special gift of complimentary passes, everyone participating will receive a credit for future Senior Center activities. The amount will depend on the

number of people going. It’s like a Christmas present!!!!

The play is at Lone Tree Arts Center on Wednesday, December 19th. They are offering this at half-price for

seniors at this matinee. We will leave the Center at 12:30 PM. The Activity Fee of $35 ($38 non-members)

includes the ticket.

OVERNIGHT MYSTERY TRIP Friday and Saturday, December 7th and 8th These lucky folks are going on an overnight trip and don’t even know where they are going. We applaud them for their bravery, and we can’t wait to hear where they went!!

TRIP - Pompeii Exhibit at Denver Museum of Nature & Science Tuesday, December 11 8:45 AM $29 ($32 non-members) The exhibit features hundreds of artifacts that survived the tragic end to this ancient Roman city. The Activity Fee covers the shuttle, entrance to the museum, the Pompeii exhibit and the audio recording for a self-guided tour. Lunch will be on your own at the café in the museum. Plus, you will receive an early Christmas present - every participant will be credited some of the fee for a future activity because we have some complimentary passes. The amount will depend on the number of people on the trip.

TRIP - Evening Holiday Lights Tour in Denver Wednesday, December 12th 4:00 PM $16 ($19 nonmembers) What is it about outdoor light displays that gets everyone in the spirit? If you feel that way, join us and take in the sights without worrying about the traffic. We’ll stop first for dinner at Black Eyed Pea (on your own), and then take a walking tour of the gorgeous lights at the Botanic Gardens. From there you’ll get in the warmth of the van for a driving tour of downtown Denver and some of the city neighborhoods known for great lighting displays. Dress for the weather at the Botanic Gardens.

THEATER -“Home for the Holidays” at Lone Tree Arts Center Wednesday, December 19th Leave at 12:30 PM $35 ($38 non-members) This special weekday matinee is half-price for Seniors. “Home for the Holidays” is filled with the classic holiday music you know and love, and is being produced by the same team that put on the wildly acclaimed “White Christmas” at Lone Tree. A good old-fashioned heartwarming holiday musical is surely high on everyone’s Christmas list.

VOA LUNCHES Every Tues & Thurs at 11:45 AM The Volunteers of America host an on-site lunch at our Center twice each week. This is a balanced & nutritious meal for a suggested donation of $2.50. No advance sign-up required.

OUT TO DINNER — The Summit Steakhouse in Aurora Tuesday, December 4th 4:15 PM $8 ($11 non-members) Sometimes there is just nothing like a perfectly cooked piece of quality meat, and that is what you will get at The Summit, known for years not only for their steaks and beef selections, but also for their chops, seafood and pastas. MONTHLY POTLUCK—Holiday Dinner & Dickens Carolers Fri, December 21st at 12:00 PM in the Great Room at the Center Bring a dish or pay $5 ($8 non-members) This is an unusual date, location and time for our potluck. We will cerebrate the holidays in our big room so we can enjoy the decorations. The Center will supply hams and turkeys, along with our members’ wonderful side dishes and desserts. You will not want to miss this for the food, the atmosphere and the friends. You’ll also not want to miss the Dickens Carolers after we eat. Day of event charge is $7 for members and $10 for non-members.

Kudos go to the Library volunteers for their continued support

of the Library. Before the Craft Show, we worked on weeding

through the books, keeping the new and moving out the old to

allow us to bring in new publications. Thanks to those who

have left excellent suggestions and ideas for the library.

Two new books on the New Release list are Sandra Brown's

Low Pressure and Mark Owen and Kevin Mauer's No Easy Day.

Sandra Brown's book is the story of a murder committed 18

years ago and whose evidence was destroyed by a tornado. The

younger sister, years later, writes a sensational bestselling novel

based on Susan's murder, inspired by the tragic event. What

happens when a tabloid reporter learns that the book is based on

fact keeps you in suspense. A great winter read.

No Easy Day, the Autobiography Of The Mission That Killed

Osama Bin Laden is not simply book about the mission itself,

but a study in what it takes to become and elite member of the

Navy SEALS. It received 4 1/2 stars by book critics such and

the New York Times. It is a first-person account that is not so

much about spilling the secrets but it is bent on explaining a

Seal's rigorous mindset and how that toughness is created. This

is an excellent book for those interested in current affairs and

Military History.

The Douglas County Lions Club participates in the international

Lions Club program which provides glasses for people in third

world countries. There is a box for your donations at the Senior

Center, so just drop them in. The glasses are cleaned, sorted

and prescriptions read by prisoners in the judicial system, and

then sent overseas to provide such joy to others.

Castle Rock’s Panera Bread and the Starbucks on

Castle Pines Parkway and Debbie Lane both donate

breads and pastries to our Center. We thank them

for their generosity and hope you will think of

them in your holiday shopping. We do enjoy their

goodies and so will others you buy for.

entered “The National Art Program Front Range Art Exhibit” held at the Phillip S. Miller Library in

October. Elaine Weaver and Charlotte Ondeck entered paintings, and Dee Thompson had a

photograph entered in the amateur category. Charlotte won a scholarship and Dee took home a

3rd place ribbon. Congratulations.

What a terrific response we had to this October trip. Thanks to everyone for participating. Where will we go next?

The 20th Annual Craft Show is now history. What a

day it was. More than 1500 people attended (so

many, in fact, that there was no parking available

part of the day - wow). There were 85 vendors

selling their wares, plus a new room with 20

Community Corner Vendors, making this the

biggest event ever. And our incredible volunteers

made it all possible. You were all fabulous!!
