This machine could cut as much grain in one day as four or five men with cradles - as much as 12 to 16 men with hand sickles. With a decade, the time to harvest one acre of wheat was reduced from about 37 hours to an estimated 11½ hours, with a bid [sic] decrease in the use of physical labour. Bridges RDHS 00152 Back: Opening of the original Fitzroy Bridge, 1 January 1881

View of the official opening of the first Fitzroy Bridge, Rockhampton, on New Year's Day, 1881. About four hundred people took part in a procession from the courthouse to the southern approach to the bridge. Here the engineer, Mr. F.J. Byerley, and the Mayor, Ald. John Ferguson, addressed those gathered, pointing out that the great work had been completed without the loss of a single life. The Mayor referred to the bridge as one of the finest structures in the colonies and certainly the finest outside the capital cities. Two bottles of champagne were broken against one of the pedestals of the bridge and it was formerly declared open for traffic. The photograph shows the volunteer military band escorting authorities across the new bridge, followed by the fire brigade and friendly societies. The volunteers are wearing uniforms, including white helmets. A crowd of spectators are gathered, many of whom arrived in horsedrawn buggies similar to that appearing in the foreground on the right. The ceremony at the northern end included the planting of two memorial trees by Mr. Henry Jones and Mr. W. Pattison, a member of the Divisional Board. After refreshments the procession reformed and returned to the south side. [Desciption from Picture Queensland State Library of Queensland : digital image collection]

The question of selecting a site for the Australian National Capital was a very lively issue in the early years of this century. Canberra was finally ratified as the site for the Capital in 1909. RDHS 00187 Caption: Looking downstream from Kaboombah Rock along the Brisbane. The white object lying on the far bank is the old gumtree that stood as a flood marker of 1893 and earlier floods. This tree was under water to a known limb. It fell over in 1950 after some heavy rain. Mr Somerset reports a solid wall of water fifty feet high coming upstream along this part of the river and striking the rock face below where this photos is taken.

RDHS 00188 Caption: This "bora circle" is the last one used by the local tribes and the last ceremony was probably 1880 early. In this circle my friend Gearbough was taken through the first steps from "boyhood" to manhood. He was marked with four verticla cuts on each shoulder. This was the very last time any ceremony was held. The ring is now "protected" and fenced. It is about 12 miles south of Kilcoy on the river bank on Brockhurst Farm (also bough by the State). The next stage to manhood, boomerang shaped cuts on the back was never performed. The Government took all free tribespeople and put them into a camp near Woodford to protect them from being shot and poisoned by whites. There were a few bad hats among the whites by then.
