Windows Into a Paideia School
The Three Columns ofInstruction
The seventh and eighthPaideia principles state:
● That the three types of teachingthat should occur in our schools aredidactic teaching of subject matter, coaching that produces the skills oflearning, and Socratic questioningin seminar discussion.
● That the results of these threetypes of teaching should be a) theacquisition of organized knowledge,b) the formation of habits of skill inthe use of language and mathematics, and c) thegrowth of the mind’s understanding of basicideas and issues.
These specific teaching practices, known as the ThreeColumns of Instruction, that are designed to supportspecific aspects of learning: Seminar for conceptualunderstanding, Coaching for development of learningskills, and Didactic instruction for factual recall.
The Three Columns are best practiced in support of oneanother, in synergy, such that each of the three modesof teaching reinforces the other two. In teaching a unit, the Paideia teacher uses all three columns – didactic, coaching, and seminar – where appropriate, and in acomplementary manner.
Didactic Instruction
The most traditional of the threecolumns of instruction is DidacticInstruction, or “teaching by telling.”This type of instruction is designed toconvey essential information that
needs to be remembered. It is an efficient way to deliverorganized knowledge; this might be through lecture ordemonstration, an audio-visual presentation or reading atextbook. It improves students’ minds by the acquisitionof organized knowledge, to become widely informedabout all kinds of subjects.
Paideia teachers believe that its use should be about 10-15% of instructional time.
