Mrs. Berlacher, who works with the busy 4th grade team here at PSE, is a virtual campus Wonder Woman. She moves quickly, handles multiple important tasks with a smile, convinces even the most reluctant learner that success is right on the horizon, and with her larger than life personality and her lighthearted wit, has become a PSE legend and an important representative of our school’s child-centered, socially responsible, and academically focused school culture. The story begins with a five year old Phyllis who would “teach” her 25 imaginary children in her very own outdoor classroom. In college she was honored to be an assistant for a communications professor, and began her master’s program with the intention of pursuing a PhD and teaching college. The sirens of the corporate world, however, lured her from her academic pursuits. Armed with a master’s degree and blind faith, she worked as a business consultant and communicator (where she received an international award for a communication program she developed). An innocent query to Mrs. Adams one day on the logistics of lateral entry (with the intention of teaching middle or high school English) led to her role as a teaching assistant for the fabulous fourth grade team! In her 13 years at PSE, Mrs. Berlacher has been a teaching assistant, media assistant, and ESL assistant. She also is a Battle of the Books and Science Olympiad coach, but perhaps is most infamously known as the carpool lady – thanks in large measure to her voice, which is recognized by all on campus as she uses her trusty bullhorn to urge all the “beautiful children” to pay attention to the important directions being given. School Supplies 2016-17Quite simply,Phyllis Berlacher, PSE Teacher Assistantof the Year, is a rare gem, a pricelesstreasure, and an indispensable memberof our school community. ProvidenceSpring would not be the same withoutthis petite powerhouse who movesmountains before lunchtime without“breaking a sweat.” She does it all. Shedoes it well and she does it with a keensense of what’s best for children. Shecould have been a college professor. Shecould have been a CEO but, thankgoodness, she decided to be aneducator, a coach and a cheerleader tohundreds of elementary students whostart their academic careers on the “rightfoot” because they follow her footsteps.

If you need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me orany of the 902 PSE students who havetheir own stories to tell about our PhyllisBerlacher.

A special note to parents aboutthe importance of schoolattendance at the end of the year

As we head down the home stretch ofthe 2015-2016 school year, I wanted toremind you that even when the EOGs areover, learning goes on at ProvidenceSpring until the last day of school. In fact, some of our most significant educationalexperiences occur right here at the endof the year, experiences which cannot beduplicated by reading a textbook or byanswering questions.“What type ofexperiences” ourparents new to theschool may ask. Justlook at a sampling ofthe opportunities which will continue toengage your child in learning.

● The annual Celebration of Nations – aculminating school-wide eventshowcasing the research about andthe music, dress and dances of theyear-long study each class has workedon so hard.

● Socratic seminars – round tablediscussions of complex texts. Yourchildren do an impressive job ofexpressing very sophisticated ideas.

● End of year class academicpresentations

A Message from Our Principal

● Visitations in the next years’ classeswith discussions of upcomingexpectations.

● A thorough review of the summerassignments and how they will begraded next year.

● Yearbook signings and curriculumbased end of year events.

In addition, our children watch andmodel after all of us here at the end ofthe year. We repeatedly remind them to

stick with a task or a project until itscompletion and we want them to seethat we “walk the walk” as well as “talkthe talk.”

In addition, grades on projects and classassignments and tests are given each daythrough the end of the year.

This last quarter and even, or I shouldsay, especially, the last days areimportant here at PSE. We don’t showmovies or waste time as we have heardschools in other systems often do. Ourteachers make every minute count, soplease make sure that your child is hereto participate in each experience which isso thoughtfully planned. The end ofschool at PSE… there’s nothing quite likeit and it is truly special when each Rocketcan take part and make the uniquecontributions which add such value tothe total school community.

Thanks for being the dedicated partneryou are.

This week our 4th gradeRockets took part inOperation Sandwich, agrade-wide service projectnow in its 11th year.

Each morning the studentsmade sandwiches andpacked lunches for homelessmen and women who cometo Urban Ministries forassistance. In the weeksleading up to this project, the 4th graders heard fromUrban Ministry clients whohad received a PSE lunch inthe past, decorated lunchbags and wrote inspirationalnotes, and baked cookies togo in the lunches.

By the end of the week, ourRockets had packed over1,500 meals for ourneighbors in need!

This project would not bepossible without thegenerous donations fromHarris Teeter and theirvendors Frito Lay, Bimbo, and Boars Head, whodonated all of the bread, meat, cheese, chips, apples, condiments, and napkins. The next time you are in thestore by the Siskey Y, pleaselet them know how much weappreciate all their help! Inaddition, a big thank you toall the parents who hostedcookie parties, came in tohelp in the mornings, anddrove the lunches downtowneach day!
