What is Science Olympiad?North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO)is a nonprofit organization with themission to attract and retain the pool ofK-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, andmathematics (STEM) degrees and careersin North Carolina. Every year NCSO hoststournaments on university, communitycollege, and public school campusesacross the state. These tournaments arerigorous academic interscholasticcompetitions that consist of a series ofdifferent hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based eventsthat are well-balanced between thevarious disciplines of biology, earthscience, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering, andtechnology. The challenging and self-motivating events of the NCSO align withthe North Carolina Standard Course ofStudy as well as the National ScienceEducation Standards. The events aredesigned to enhance and strengthenboth science content and process skills.(Adapted from www.sciencenc.com)

For more information and to review theevents for this year, please visitwww.sciencenc.com and select DivisionA – Grades 3-6.

Who is running it and when? Whatcosts are involved?Wendy Ikoku is the head coach andAileen Westover is the parent facilitator. This is PSE’s 7th year participating in NCScience Olympiad and we have beenblessed with some wonderful PSEteachers who have volunteered to coach, but….we will need parent coaches aswell. There will be 19 different eventsthis year requiring coaches. Please

consider coaching – it is fun and VERYrewarding.

We will meet every Friday from 3:00-4:15 p.m., starting January 8th. Thecompetition will be held on May 21,2016, from 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. atUNCC. This club takes a lot of hard work, dedication and time commitment. Weneed students to be at every meetingand stay the whole day at thecompetition at UNCC in May. You willalso need to practice on your own athome by studying and perfecting yourevent!

This year, there is a membership fee of$35 per student. This fee will cover thecost of team registration, team t-shirts,and materials needed for the variouspractice events.

Who can join and where can I signup?Any student can apply to be part of theteam if they are in grades 3-5. This year,we are limited to 3 teams of 12 studentsper team. The teams should have aneven distribution of members fromgrades 3-5. Due to these restrictivenumbers, we are asking students toprovide the following: answers to aseries of questions describing why theywould be a good Science Olympiad teammember, a teacher recommendation, and current science grades. Theapplication will be made available onThursday, November 12th. The shortanswer questions, essays, and teacherrecommendations are due by Friday,November 20th to Mrs. Ikoku.
