lead-in to the gelding’s second start at Geelong
on September 6.
Rocket, as he is known to all and sundry,
owned the gelding with a mate and he had
entrusted his nephew, rookie trainer Clayton,
with the then talented but unexposed horse
and the pressure mounted when the owner
had rejected substantial offers emanating
from Hong Kong following the five-length Sale
victory on August 13.
The experienced eye of Rodney
“Rocket” Douglas told the former
trainer that Barocha (Ilovethiscity)
was a good horse and a lightning
Mornington track gallop that was markedly
faster than Group 1 sprinter Santa Ana Lane
(Lope De Vega) convinced him the gelding may
well be the real deal.
That insight, backed up by two impressive
jump-outs against stakes-class horses in late
July, prompted Douglas to have “the biggest
bet I’ve ever had in my life” when Barocha last
month lined up for his first start.
He admitted to nerves leading up to
Barocha’s much-talked-about Sale maiden win
- he won by five lengths as an odds-on favourite
after Douglas took care of the generous opening
prices - and the heart rate went up again in the Continued on page 2>>

Another impressive performance at
Geelong, on September 6, would up the offers and also boost Barocha’s
Hong Kong handicapper rating sufficiently.
Douglas had vowed to accept an offer “too good to refuse” if he made
it two from two and Clayton was also in line for a financial windfall.
The Barocha story starts years earlier when Douglas shared in the
ownership of another horse by under-rated Victorian stallion Ilovethiscity
(Magic Albert).
“We had a good Ilovethiscity with Tony Vasil a couple of years before
who never raced,” Douglas recalled yesterday.
“He went out for a spell, a couple of mates were in him, and then we
found him dead in the paddock.
He had a tumour in his heart.
“He could run, so I just kept
looking at the Ilovethiscitys.
There’s not that many of them
and the year of Barocha I was
in Adelaide selling yearlings
because I pinhook a couple and
I said to Anthony Freedman,
‘come down and have a look at
this Ilovethiscity’.
“We went and looked at it
and it wasn’t big enough for me
but Anthony loved it … and that
was (Group-placed) King Of
Hastings.”
Not long after, Douglas
spotted Barocha at the 2018
Inglis Vobis Gold Yearling Sale
and landed him for just $12,000
from the Rushton Park draft.
As King Of Hastings emerged
as an above average sprinter,
Douglas was forced to be patient
with Barocha.
Tony Vasil did the early
work with Barocha but his well-
publicised disqualification led to
the horse changing stables.
“I was going to give him to Freedman, but I said to Clayton, ‘you may
as well take this horse and see’ and we got him going and, next minute, he
was going like a learjet,” he said.
“I still couldn’t believe that when he went to Sale, after his trial, what
odds he was. I was like a panther waiting to back him because I’ve got a
mate who can get on.

“As soon as the odds came up at $6, I
rang him and next minute we were getting $4.20 and it was the biggest bet
I’ve ever had in my life.”
He continued: “I said he won’t get out of first gear. I’ve seen all these
horses like Super Seth and horses like that and that’s how they go when
they go to maidens and that’s what he did.
“I was around Clayton like a rash. He had some teachers around him
before the race, I can assure you, and his uncle was holding his hand at
trackwork on fast mornings.”
There was no betting at Barocha’s second start, but there was still a lot
at stake.
“I timed him at the track leading up to those races and I did the
trackwork for the papers for many years when I was a kid, so I know the
markers.” he said.
“I said to Anthony Freedman the morning he worked Santa Ana Lane,
‘that thing of ours has gone two seconds faster than yours the last three
furlongs’. He said, ‘Well, it won’t be getting beaten’. It was going like a
stakes horse.”
Barocha, of course, won at Geelong, and after further sale negotiations
the money landed on Monday and it was confirmed that John Size would
train the gelding for the Beauty Stable’s Simon and Patrick Kwok in a deal
handled by Australian-based agent, Wattle Bloodstock’s Peter Twomey.
“I don’t know if he’s a Group 1 horse, but the sky’s the limit for him,”
Douglas said.
“But you just couldn’t knock back the money for him as you’ve seen
what has happened with Rothfire and didn’t they knock back $3 million
for Masked Crusader? You could divide him by about five now. There’s
Kinane as well, so I know that they can be here today, gone tomorrow.
“It’s going to make my life a lot easier and I can do all sorts of things
with the money and drink happily ever after.”
Clayton also received a significant sling for his efforts and his uncle
was more than happy to part with the money.
He said: “I paid for his new truck. Normally that happens when the
trainers buy them and things like that, but I said to him that if he can
win at Geelong and we can get the deal done for him - I’d knocked back
$750,000 for him after his Sale win - then I’d give him ten percent.”
A few champagnes, justifiably, were consumed on Monday night by
Douglas and his wife Naomi, but it was back to work yesterday managing
Munz’s extensive racing portfolio.
Valuable Chris Waller-trained mare Toffee Tongue (Tavistock), the
sister to Werther who landed the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) in
Adelaide last campaign, is at a crossroads on Saturday in the Turnbull
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).
“It will determine where she stands on Saturday. If she runs a good
race in the Turnbull, obviously you push onto the Caulfield Cup, but if
she doesn’t measure up to that class you can lower your sights and maybe
aim at a Geelong Cup or a Moonee Valley Cup or something like that,” the
Pinecliff Racing manager said.
“Chris could give her one more run and say we’re better off giving her
a break and waiting for the autumn where in Sydney there’s give in the
tracks.
“She’s in the Melbourne Cup, so that might be the way she goes, but
she’s done the job already being a Group 1 winner. She’s an outcross filly,
so you can breed her to anything.”
First-up Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Bobbie Lewis (Gr
2, 1200m) winner Zoutori (Zoustar), a horse Munz and his co-owners
rejected offers for when the gelding was a three-year-old, will race down
the Flemington straight again on Saturday in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m). He is also nominated for the Paris Lane Stakes (Listed, 1400m).
“At this stage he’s going to run in the Gilgai, but he’s poorly weighted
in that race, giving Santa Ana Lane three kilos. He’s badly weighted but
he’s such a good straight horse,” he said.
“After Saturday, I think Matty and Simon will step him up. He did run
fifth in the Carbine Club and fourth in the Sandown Guineas, so he can
run a mile.”
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Southbank (Fastnet Rock),
who ran fifth in the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) first-up, was third in
last year’s Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Douglas holds the mare
in high regard.
A $1.25 million Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase, being
out of Group 3 winner Rezoned (Zabeel), herself a sister to four-time
winner Preferment, Southbank is nominated for the Rose Of Kingston
Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).
“She’s had a few issues with her back and things, so they keep her at
Flemington now,” he said.
“First-up she just peaked and hopefully she gets a run in that race and
we will see where she sits as it was a good run the other day.
“She’s probably the best type of horse we’ve ever bought and she has
been a bit stiff. Two strides before she’d won the Thousand Guineas, but
Flit got her near the line.”
Munz, whose GSA Bloodstock portfolio numbers about 100 elite broodmares,
also has the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Agreeable (Sebring) heading
towards the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday week.
“There are a lot of mares up in the Hunter Valley and then there’s
others he’s sent to Super Seth. He’s got the Abbey Maries and Fenways
with Arrowfield as well,” Douglas said of Munz.
“He’s very passionate about it.”

Coolmore secures Santa Ana Lane for Everest
Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) will run in his
third Everest (1200m) after Coolmore came to
agreement with the owners of the Anthony and
Sam Freedman-trained five-time Group 1 winner.
“Given his record at Randwick over 1200 metres
we were confident he would receive a slot, so it
has been our sole focus this preparation,” Anthony
Freedman said. “It’s a race that continues to grow
in popularity each year and we are proud to be
involved.” Coolmore Australia principal Tom
Magnier pointed out that the breeding operation
had a long-term relationship with the Freedman
stable. “Santa Ana Lane is out of a Fastnet Rock
mare and he is one of the best sprinters we have
seen in the past decade,” Magnier said. “Anthony
and Sam are very happy with the horse and we
believe if he brings his best he will be hard to beat.”
Santa Ana Lane, who ran sixth in the 2018 Everest
and second last year, will resume in the Gilgai
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
He is owned by the William Street syndicate.
Jolly happy to reunite with NashBehemoth’s (All Too Hard) trainer David Jolly
is delighted to have 60-time Group 1-winning
jockey Nash Rawiller on board his star gelding
for The Everest. Despite the complexities
surrounding jockey selection between slot
holder The Star and Behemoth’s owners Grand
Syndicates, he is pleased to have a jockey on
board that he has enjoyed success with in the
past. “I think Nash will really suit the horse and
I’ve had a bit of success with him back in the
day,” Jolly told Thoroughbred Racing SA. “He
won a Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) for me on
Sassbee (Blevic).” Jolly will make a decision
later in the week regarding a potential hit-out
between races at Morphettville on Saturday or
a jump-out at Murray Bridge on Friday. “We’re
just working out what will suit the horse best
and the timing,” Jolly said. “He’ll have a good
gallop later in the week and then he’ll travel up
the following week and I’ll probably head up
with the horse.”
Wide draw no barrier for FunstarFunstar’s (Adelaide) wide barrier draw in the
Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) may work
to her advantage, according to jockey Glen
Boss. Funstar came up with gate 19 of 21 at
Tuesday's barrier draw but Boss, who will bid
for his fifth victory in the famous Randwick
mile after winning on Kolding (Ocean Park)
12 months ago, remained upbeat the mare still
had a strong chance. "The draw doesn't really
make it that difficult. It's probably one of the
fairest starts in Australia, the mile start," Boss
said. "Sometimes the inside draws can be a
hindrance to you and the outside draws can
be a saviour with the pressure that can come
from the outside." Funstar, who landed the
Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last year, lines up
on Saturday following a solid second to Wild
Planet (Animal Kingdom) earlier this month.
"She has been set for the race having had two
runs under her belt already and she is third
up," Boss said. "I got to work her on Saturday
morning on the course proper at Rosehill and
she just seems to be low flying at the moment."
Gate obstacle for ProbabeelLining up next to Funstar in barrier 18 will
be last year’s Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
winner Probabeel (Savabeel) and her trainer
James Richards is considerably less optimistic
about the wide draw. “I am gutted, but we are
just going to have to be a bit patient and most-
likely go back and give her a crack at them late
and see how it all fits together,” Richards said.
“We will be open-minded about how she is
ridden and thankfully we have a very capable
rider (Kerrin McEvoy) who knows exactly what
it takes to win these big races.” Probabeel took
out the Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m)
last start and will shoulder 52.5 kilograms in
the Epsom Handicap, which Richards thinks
is more than fair. “This has been the aim all
the way through, trying to get her into the race
with the right sort of weight that we thought
she could win,” said Richards. “She has got in
there with 52.5kgs, as has Funstar, so for a four-
year-old mare that has got Group 1 form in
the autumn in Sydney, I think it is quite a nice
weight.”

McEvoy confident in MugatooMetropolitan Handicap (Group 1, 2400m)
favourite Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator) will
need to set a modern day weight-carrying
record if he is to give jockey Kerrin McEvoy a
first win the race. Mugatoo, who landed gate
seven at yesterday’s barrier draw, will carry 57
kilograms in Saturday's feature after receiving
a one kilogram penalty for his dominant
Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) triumph.
"This is a nice Group 1 race for him to be aimed
at and Kris [Lees] has got to know the horse
well over a couple of seasons now, so I feel
this is the best he's been," McEvoy said. "Kris
and the team said he has pulled up well since
that Newcastle Cup win, which he got an extra
kilogram penalty for, but he is the class horse in
the race and I'm looking forward to riding him
there on Saturday." The only other horses to
win off similar weights in the past 20 years are
Opinion (Oasis Dream), who had 56 kilograms
in 2014, and County Tyrone (Nice Choice), who
was prepared by Lees to win with 56.5 kilograms
a decade earlier.
Hill Stakes for Fierce ImpactLast-start Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) is expected
to line up in Sydney on Saturday, rather than
heading to the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
at Flemington. Trainer Matthew Smith has
indicated that the seven-year-old entire, who
won a barrier trial on Monday, is set to run in
the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Randwick. He
was also entered for the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1,
1600m) and the Turnbull Stakes.
Vet check for Etah JamesEtah James (Raise The Flag) will be inspected
later this week to ascertain whether she is
suitable to race in the Metropolitan Handicap
after Racing NSW stewards received advice of
two separate issues with the mare. “Etah James
(an acceptor in The Heineken Metropolitan)
underwent surgery for the removal of a sarcoid
adjacent to its right eye since its last start,” said
Racing NSW. “In addition to this surgery, the
mare has healing granulation tissue associated
with postoperative topical therapy to the left
side of its face. A veterinary clearance has been
received and Racing NSW chief veterinary
officer, Dr Toby Koenig will inspect Etah
James later this week to ascertain the mare’s
suitability to race.” Etah James trialed three
times in September but has not competed on a
race day since winning the Sydney Cup (Gr 1,
3200m) in April.
Aktau on track for TurnbullAktau (Teofilo) will line up in the Turnbull
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday and Mike
Moroney is expecting him to show his class
ahead of the Caulfield Cup (Group 1, 2400m)
on October 17. Aktau will take on a star-studded
line up in Saturday's feature at Flemington, with
Verry Elleegant (Zed), Surprise Baby (Shocking)
and Master Of Wine (Maxios) among the field.
"It's going to be a tough assignment but I think
he's ready to run a big race and it will bring
him on to peak in the Caulfield Cup," Moroney
said. He will be ridden in the Turnbull Stakes
by Daniel Moor who will retain the ride for the
Caulfield Cup, which Aktau secured his place
for by winning the Mornington Cup (Listed,
2400m) in March. The five-year-old is 50th in
the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) order of
entry. "Hopefully he can get in the Melbourne
Cup from his next two starts but if he hasn't got
in, we will look at running him in the Hotham
Handicap," Moroney said.
Arcadia Queen to remain on Cox Plate pathArcadia Queen (Pierro) will again take on
Russian Camelot (Camelot) in the Caulfield
Stakes as owner Bob Peters maps out her path
to the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 24.
Arcadia Queen faded late into third place in last
Saturday’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at
Caulfield, finishing behind Russian Camelot
and Humidor (Teofilo) and Peters is happy to
have another crack at the pair, but admits his
mare will need to step up a gear. "The path (to
the Cox Plate) was always the Caulfield Stakes.
She can get better, but she'll have to,” Peters told
Racing.com. "I think she was good until the last
50 (metres) and then she seemed to hit the wall,
but she might not have been quite ready for it.
I think that horse (Russian Camelot) might be
the best horse in Australia at the moment and
the other old horse (Humidor) that got her for
second place, he is a pretty good horse too."
Richards plans exhibition gallop for Gytrash
Gordon Richards will run star-sprinter Gytrash
(Lope De Vega) between races at Warwick
Farm a week today in preparation for his shot
at The Everest on October 17. "I'm looking
forward to seeing him again and giving him a
pat. It's hard not to miss him," Richards, who
heads back to Sydney on Friday, told Racing.
com. "The plan is to gallop him between races
at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, October
7. He will have a companion in the workout
because he can float around a bit when he's by
himself. We intend to give him a pretty solid
hit-out, which will fit in perfectly 10 days out
from The Everest.” Gytrash, who will be aiming
to add to his sole Group 1 in the Black Caviar
Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m), features prominently
in the betting as third-favourite behind Nature
Strip (Nicconi) and Classique Legend (Not A
Single Doubt).
Empire Rose next for Mystic JourneyMystic Journey (Needs Further) will line up
in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Flemington on October 31, trainer Adam
Trinder has confirmed. The five-year-old mare
had not won since August last year but returned
to form when taking out the Stocks Stakes (Gr
2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
"She will go five weeks into the Empire Rose
on Derby Day, that's the plan," Trinder told
RSN927. "That was potentially always our
mindset the whole way through. She held an
entry for the Cox Plate, but I was always leaning
towards keeping her at 1600 metres. It's just the
way things have transpired that it's probably
worked out perfect now. She will have a nice
little break between runs, which doesn't affect
her whatsoever."

Zahra to ride Cambourne in GuineasMark Zahra will ride Cambourne (Redoute’s
Choice) in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
on October 10, replacing Michael Dee after
a consultation with the ownership group.
Cambourne was unbeaten heading into last
weekend’s Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3,
1400m) and finished a credible fourth, two and
a quarter lengths behind winner Crosshaven
(Smart Missile). "He has bounced through it
beautifully. He was right on his toe (Tuesday)
morning," Michael Kent Jr, who trains in
partnership with Mick Price, told Racing.com.
"He carries very good body weight, which is
important because he has got a compressed
program given he started late. He has got a few
things in his favour, he has a great constitution,
he works, eats and sleeps, literally. He is very
relaxed and doesn't waste any nervous energy.
And most importantly, he has got talent."
Gong on cards for ’Gator
Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) will likely end
his Sydney spring campaign in the The Gong
(1600m), depending on how the four-year-
old comes through the $7.5m Golden Eagle
(1500m). The gelding is due to arrive in Sydney
early next month for the Silver Eagle (1300m)
at Randwick on October 10, before tackling
the big prize of the Golden Eagle three weeks
later. Alligator Blood, who won the Australian
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in February, had his
first start for the spring in a sprint at Doomben
(1100m) carrying 61kg into third place and
pleasing his trainer with his effort. “He settled
nicely and found the line, he didn’t set the world
on fire but he got a pass mark and he has come
through it well,’’ David Vandyke told Racing
NSW. “I’m looking forward to seeing him over
the 1300m which would be a more suitable trip
but I’d say his best distance is probably around
the Golden Eagle distance (1500m).”
Malahide on track for Magic MillionsMalahide’s (Shamus Award) trainer Michael Costa
is targeting another shot at the Magic Millions
carnival with his talented mare. The five-year-
old came a creditable sixth in the Magic Millions
Fillies & Mares Rising Stars Handicap (1300m)
last January and will have her second start this
campaign over 1100 metres at the Gold Coast
today, after a fifth-placed finish over 1200 metres
at Doomben earlier this month. “She looked the
winner at one stage in her last run but gassed out
and rolled back to the fence which was probably
the worst part of the track,” Costa told Racing
Queensland yesterday. “She resented being in
close to the fence and a few things brought her
undone. At this stage she’ll have a short break for
two or three weeks after tomorrow and get ready
for some Listed races during the summer and the
Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race again.”
Shalaa filly wins Brisbane trialA filly by Arrowfield Stud’s shuttler Shalaa
(Invincible Spirit) won a two-year-old barrier
trial at Eagle Farm yesterday in the fastest heat
of the morning. Trained by Rob Heathcote,
Shaluna won heat two for fillies over 800 metres
where she scored by five lengths in a time of
46,01 seconds. Raced by Chinchilla’s Gleeson
Thoroughbreds, who also bred Heathcote’s
injured Group 1 winner Rothfire (Rothesay),
after being passed in at the Magic Millions Gold
Coast March Yearling Sale, Shaluna defeated
Entanglement (Bel Esprit) and Rhapsody Rose
(Star Witness). Shalaa stands for a fee of $33,000
(inc GST) at Arrowfield this year.
Extreme Choice colts win jump outsTrainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr are eying
off the MRC Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Caulfield on Saturday week with a pair of colts
by first season sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single
Doubt). Extreme Warrior won heat one in a time
of 48.94 seconds for the 800 metres after working
home strongly while Red Rocketship showed
speed to win heat two in a time of 49.17 seconds.
94 pay up for Melbourne CupA total of 94 horses remain in contention for a
start in the 2020 Melbourne Cup, the highest
number of first acceptances in ten years.
Racing Victoria announced that despite the
Covid-19 pandemic, the Melbourne Cup had
82 locally-trained horses and 12 international
horses paid up as first acceptors on Tuesday.
Over the past five years there has been an
average of 16 overseas horses still in the
mix at the same stage. The biggest names to
drop out of Melbourne Cup contention are
Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), Arcadia Queen
(Pierro) and Colette (Hallowed Crown).
Chris Waller has the most in the running
with nine, including Verry Elleegant and
Finche (Frankel). Last year's Melbourne
Cup-winning trainer Danny O'Brien has six
first acceptors, including reigning champion
Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War)
and boom galloper Russian Camelot. With
an international rating of 121, the Aidan
O'Brien-trained Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo)
is the headline act among the international
horses due to land in Melbourne on Friday
night. Hugh Bowman will ride him in the
Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
NSW horse movement restrictions easedRacing NSW has announced further easing of
restrictions permitting horses to travel from
Victoria into NSW, following a reduction in
the amount of daily new Covid-19 cases in
Victoria and the stabilisation of the infection
rate. The latest announcement means Victorian
horses no longer have to spend two full days at

stable. Racing NSW announced: “The easing of
these restrictions will allow all horses currently
located in Victoria to be transported into
NSW, subject to the Racing NSW Policy for the
Transportation of Horses from Victoria with
horses now only required to spend three hours
in an outside yard or paddock at a spelling
property or pre-training property before
being transported to a racecourse or licensed
stables.” Other restrictions, including use of
one transport driver and maintaining social
distancing, remain in place.

Alexander blasts timingArchie Alexander was unhappy with Racing
NSW’s relaxation of Covid-19 protocols, arguing
the announcement should have come before
the acceptance time for the Metropolitan and
Epsom Handicaps. Alexander said he was keen
to run last year’s Metropolitan runner-up Gallic
Chieftain (Tamayuz) and Young Rascal (Intello)
this weekend. "If they'd announced this 24
hours earlier, we would have gone," Alexander
told Racing.com. "We decided not to go because
it is too complicated with no staff allowed to
travel with the horses. Going to a spelling farm
for two days - it is not a training centre as we
know. You don't know what the facilities are
like - they are farms not training centres - and
so with no staff, you don't want to hand over the
pride and joy of your stable to people you don't
know. It's exactly the reason we haven't gone
and then to find out just after acceptance time
of the change in rules is really disappointing.
Under the new rules, to spend three hours at
a spelling farm is actually a really nice luxury.
The horse can get off the truck and have a pick
and a roll, have a drink and then they head off
to Warwick Farm as we've always done. We use
Ciaron Maher's place to run from and we would
have gone. Instead we have no runners. It's
annoying. I am not saying we would have won
but it's the principle.”
Injury sidelines ThorntonDamien Thornton will be out for an extended
period of time after suffering five fractures and
ligament damage in his right foot. The Group-1
winning jockey was injured in a
racing incident at Pakenham
on August 31 and the latest
diagnosis is worse than
originally expected. Thornton
had to undergo surgery and will
wear a moon boot for the next six weeks,
with his return date not likely to be until 2021.
NEW ZEALAND
Brosnan savours stakes winMark Brosnan won his first stakes race for
over nine years when Supreme Heights
(Jimmy Choux) won the New Zealand
Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale Trainers Series
(Gr 3, 1400m) on Saturday, and he believes it
was a fitting outcome from a mare who held
the shining light at the end of New Zealand’s
Covid-19 racing lockdown. “It’s been a long
time between them,” Brosnan said. “She’s a
good mare and I knew she had the ability, but
I was worried about her handling the track.
We decided to press on during lockdown and
keep training them. We never have more than
12 in work and Yo [Brosnan’s wife] and I do it
ourselves. It’s helped us have her fit enough
for this race, even though she paid a hefty
penalty for her (lead-up) win at Te Rapa. The
sort of horses I’m dealing with are suited by
the racing and tracks at the time we had the
lockdown. That’s often the time of year I get
a few winners, while the good horses are out
with the bigger stables easing off and resting
most of their teams.”
Divine Prophet juvenile wins trial
First season sire Divine Prophet (Choisir) had a
trial winner at Te Aroha yesterday as his juvenile
colt out of Caramellos showed an electrifying
foot in heat seven. Trained by Team Rogerson,
the unnamed juvenile beat two other two-year-
olds under Samantha Collett. Divine Prophet,
who won the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
in 2016 and now stands at Aquis Farm in NSW
for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST), is awaiting his
first race day winner.
ASIA
Jolly Banner after third Group winChampion trainer Ricky Yiu is targeting stable
stalwart Jolly Banner (Lonhro) at the National
Day Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1000m) on Thursday,
as he bids to secure a third Group victory for the
nine-year-old. “This will be one of his last few
runs – probably by the end of the year we will
try and send him back to Australia – he’s a nine-
year-old, so we need to take it race-by-race,” Yiu
told the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The gelding,
who will race for the 43rd time in the handicap,
has won HK$14.8 million in prize money since
being bought at the 2013 Australian Easter
Yearling Sale for AUD$300,000 (approx. HK$1.6
million). “It was love at first sight!” Yiu said. “I
rang up the client, who is the owner now, and
straight away said we need to buy this horse
– he’ll do well, I like him a lot, he’s a natural
runner.” Jolly Banner’s last two wins have come
at Group 3 level, firstly the 2019 Bauhinia Sprint
Trophy Handicap (Gr 3, 1000m) followed by
the Premier Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) three
starts ago in June.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Cup prize money boostThe Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia will increase
prize-money for its two-day Saudi Cup
meeting, beginning in Riyadh on February 19.
Prince Bandar bin Khalid al Faisal, chairman
of the JCSA, announced that US$30.5 million
would be offered across the Saudi Cup card,
up from US$29.2m, with the feature contest
still run for US$20m. The JCSA has increased
the prize-money for three dirt races on the
card: the Obaiya Arabian Classic, The Jockey
Club Local Handicap and the Saudi Derby. A
new race will also be staged on the opening
day of the meeting, the US$500,000 Saudi
International Handicap, which will be open to
runners from tier two and tier three countries,
such as Italy. The JCSA is withholding prize-
money from connections of the first Saudi Cup
winner, Maximum Security (New Year's Day),
whose former trainer Jason Servis is among 27
people facing federal charges in the US as part
of an alleged widespread doping scheme. "This
is a very unusual situation and not something
any of us could have predicted," Prince Bandar
said. "We're at the mercy of what's happening
in the US. I can assure everyone there will be a
resolution.”

Billy Pyers is perhaps, and certainly
unfairly, best known for going to
jail. Twice.
His release, on the second
occasion, came after a pardon from French
President Georges Pompidou. Quite a tale.
However those stories - other than
demonstrating just how popular he was with the
French - don’t do justice to the likeable South
Australian who, with his red hair and freckles,
was dubbed Ginger Meggs and worthily takes
his place among our “Incomparables”.
Pyers created a huge impression, courtesy
of his skill in the saddle and big personality,
in Australia, France and even in England
where he had many memorable cameos
including winning major races at his first ride at
Newmarket, Ascot and York.
But Australia and France were his homes
and where he dominated the racing and general
news at various times. He won the Prix de l’arc
de Triomphe in Paris (where he was jailed a
few days later) and was seven times champion
jockey in Adelaide by the age of 24, in 1957.
He won his 8th and 9th premierships in
1959-60 and 1960-61. Then, as his services were
keenly sought by interstate trainers, he won the
Caulfield Cup and the Golden Slipper in 1963
and other major races including the Moonee
Valley Cup, Newmarket Handicap, Oakleigh
Plate, Futurity Stakes, Caulfield Stakes, Cantala
Stakes and VRC Sires.
At home, he rode Tulloch to win the 1961
Pullman Stakes which was the great horse’s
only appearance in
Adelaide. It was the
third last win (and
start) of Tulloch’s 53
start career which
yielded 36 wins and
just one unplaced
run. He won the
Adelaide Cup, SA
Derby plus the
Goodwood twice and
SA Oaks seven times.
''I never had a better
jockey than Billy
Pyers,'' reportedly
said legendary South
Australian trainer
Colin Hayes.
In 1964 he went to
France to partner with
fellow Australian,
trainer Ernie Fellows,
and on his first ride
in England won
the 2000 Guineas
at Newmarket on
20/1 chance Baldric II
who was trained by Fellows and owned by an
American Mrs Howell (Dorothy) Jackson whose
maroon colours - in truth those of her husband
- were apparently the oldest registered in the
United States.
He later rode for Daniel Wildenstein, the
Aga Khan and for another American Nelson
Bunker Hunt which led to his partnership with
the champion mare Dahlia, albeit one which
was terminated by the owner in her four-year-
old season.
His major successes included the King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (twice),
French Derby, Irish Oaks, Ascot Gold Cup and
the 1967 Arc on Topyo. He also won the 1973
Washington DC international on the great
Dahlia, whom he regarded as the greatest horse
he ever rode.

The Incomparable And Individual Billy PyersWilliam Bert “Billy” Pyers (1933-2004)
Bill rides Nasram to a shock victory over Santa Claus, 1964 JOCKEYPEDIA5
| 13 |
Pyers provided some background to his
move to France and securing his Arc mount in a
Racing Post interview in 2002.
"Ernie (Fellows) had only about 20
horses, so I also started riding out for Mick
Bartholomew," he recalled, "which led to big-
race wins like the Gold Cup on Pardallo and
the Arc on Topyo. I hadn't ridden a winner in
France when I came over to Newmarket to ride
Baldric in the Guineas."
Nor had he been to Newmarket until
that week as was reported post-race: - “The
Australian Jockey saw Newmarket for the first
time when he walked the course on Tuesday
morning. He said the win was the greatest
day of his career. After arriving in France in
February he had ridden 20 times without
success. Now, at the 21st attempt, came this
brilliantly-executed victory.”
The Guineas was then the richest race in
England. "I guess we are lucky in England,”
gasped an almost breathless Mrs. Howell
Jackson after the win.
“The American owner's remark was the
understatement of the racing season,” the
report added, “but understandably so in the
excitement of victory. Mrs. Jackson has had three
runners In our classics and each has won. The
colt, bred at the Jackson's stud in Middleburg,
Virginia, is trained in France by an Australian,
Ernie Fellows, and
was ridden by his
compatriot Bill
Pyers.
“ V i c t o r y
c o m p l e t e d
a remarkable
treble for the
Jacksons as their only
other runner in the English classics was Never
Too Late II, heroine of the 1960 Oaks and One
Thousand Guineas.”
Apparently it was also a good result for
Bob Simpson's Australian cricket team who
retained the Ashes 1-0 and backed Baldric II on
Pyers’ recommendation.
The Guineas would not be the only time
that Pyers, who was described as "a fun-loving
jockey whose flair for imaginative pranks made
him one of the best-liked personalities of the
Australian turf”, would stun the English.
This was filed after he won the Dante
Stakes at York the following year: - “Bill Pyers,
the French-based jockey who made a habit of
winning on his first ride on an English course,
did it again at York yesterday. Pyers, who last
year had first-timers at Newmarket on Baldric
II in the 2,000 Guineas and at Ascot on Nasram
in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes, was a late replacement for stable jockey
Brian Connorton on Ballymarais in the Dante
Stakes and the Northern-trained colt slammed
his more fancied Derby rivals to win by half
a length from the Irish challenger Meadow
Court.”
Life was good for the young gun from South
Australia. Pyers, after winning the Arc on 80/1
chance Topyo in 1967, told Reuters he planned
to settle permanently in France "unless I earn
enough money to live in idle luxury".
"It is the ambition of all jockeys to win
the Arc,” Pyers said, “it’s the biggest race in
the world, or that's what we think. It makes
the Melbourne Cup look small. It makes ten
Melbourne Cups. We think in Australia that the
Melbourne Cup is the crowning glory, but they
have hardly heard of it here.
"We've still got a soft spot for Australia but
this is the place".
Topyo was owned by Suzy Volterra
(Grimberg) who began her career as a dancer
at the Paris Opera. In 1947, she met Léon
Volterra, Parisian impresario and great lover
of horses, whom she married shortly before he
died in 1949. He left her his property including
his stable of racehorses. She also won the 1955
Epsom Derby with Phil Drake and would later
engage one of France’s leading lawyers to
represent Pyers when faced with charges from
two car accidents.
Chantilly trainer
B a r t h o l o m e w
prepared Topyo
to win the Arc.
Aside from this
success, he was
well known for
contracting Lester
Piggott to ride for him on
Sundays (only) in France and also for tutoring
(as did Tommy Smith) respected trainer Henry
Candy.
At the time, Pyers said he estimated he was
earning two or three times what he would be
earning in Australia.
“The large grin of Australian Billy Pyers is
extra wide these days— he's just become the
highest paid jockey in Europe,” it was reported
in 1968, “Pyers has signed to ride the powerful
string of horses owned by international art
dealer Daniel Wildenstein for the next three
years. His reported retainer is $US80,000 a year.
In addition he will receive his riding fees and
ten per cent of all place money.”
The average earnings for a week’s work, in
Australia, in 1965-66 was $57 (around $740 in
today’s dollars).
The Daily Mail quoted the the racing
manager for Mr and Mrs Howell Jackson as
saying “we could not match the $80,000 a
year Daniel Wildenstein is paying him" while
former English champion rider Sir Gordon
Richards said “an absolutely top English jockey
can probably command a retainer of not more
than £6,000. Things seem to have got out of all
proportion".
Pyers, like his compatriot Togo Johnstone
who was dubbed Le Crocodile in France, could
find trouble.
Max Presnell wrote, in 2004 after Pyers
died in the same week as cricket legend Keith
Miller: “Pyers was in a car crash in France

and escorted the women driver of the other
car to her home, and was assured she wasn't
injured. More than a year later the woman
recognised Pyers on television after he won a
big race and sued him for careless driving and
failing to report an accident. He spent 33 days
in gaol, and said ''the best two blokes I met
were Russian spies''.
Indeed it was a few days after winning the
Arc and it was then reported that Pyers would
spend at least three days in the “grim” Sante
Prison.
“He was arrested last night following a
motoring case last July when he was sentenced
to a years imprisonment in his absence. But
there was a public outcry tonight over the
jailing of Pyers….he is almost a national hero,”
the French Press reported.
Pyers, then 34, said he knew nothing about
the court hearing which heard evidence of an
alleged hit and run driving offence 15 months
earlier. His lawyer said Pyers was being
pampered by warders hoping to get tips for the
races.
Soon after it was reported that Pyers “who
rode the winner of Europe's richest race ten
days ago, went off to jail for a year today.”
He was freed a month later. “Jockey
Bill Pyers will be set free from a French jail
tomorrow—after serving just thirty-four days
of a one-year sentence. His lawyer successfully
appealed today against the sentence passed on
the Australian in his absence last July. Today the
appeal court decided that papers telling Pyers
of his right to appeal had not been properly
served.
“Judges reduced the sentence to a £140
fine and a month in jail. When the verdict was
announced, Pyers jumped up and embraced
his lawyer, his wife Becky and 14-year-old
daughter Sandra and burst into tears.”
Four years later, Pyers found himself in hot
water again.
It was January 1971 and a French
prosecutor insisted he should go to gaol on
charges of drunk driving, assault and attempted
bribery of a police officer. Pyers had earlier
been convinced of these charges but given
a six months suspended sentence which the
prosecutor argued was “insufficient” penalty.
"The conduct of Mr William Pyers was to
say the least cavalier", the prosecutor said. He
was re-sentenced to three months jail.
Then, in January 1972, came news of
his pardon. “Australian jockey Bill Pyers left
Compiegne prison yesterday with a presidential
pardon. The 38-year-old, one of the idols of
French racing, had served nearly two thirds of
a three month term.
“Pyers looked fit but pale as he came
bouncing through the iron prison gates to
freedom in cold, foggy weather. ‘I was in the
prison infirmary all the time, so life wasn't too
bad’,” he said.
The Arc was one of 23 races, which now
have Group 1 status, Pyers won in England,
Ireland and France. He also rode the champion
mare Dahlia to multiple successes including the
Washington DC International after which her
trainer Maurice Zliber was asked to compare
Dahlia to the American champion Secretariat
(who won the Triple Crown that year).
Zilber said: “She could beat Secretariat any
day in any country. I would like to see a match
race. I would even put up my money".
Pyers’ wins on Dahlia in the Irish Oaks and
in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes were especially memorable.
Julian Wilson, in The Great Racehorse,
wrote: “Dahlia’s success in the King George was
one of the most staggering big race victories I
have ever seen. Last with a half mile to race, she
swept past a field which included Rheingold
and Roberto to win by six lengths going away. A
week earlier, Dahlia had beaten the four lengths
Oaks winner Mysterious by three lengths in the
Irish Oaks.”
"She was a very good filly and on that day
she was something special," Pyers said of the
King George win.
Dahlia may have won as she liked at Ascot
that year, but before the race the following year
(which she won again), Pyers was told by Ted
Curtin - training for Bunker Hunt in Ireland -
that Lester Piggott would be riding the filly in
the King George.
Pyers recalled in the Racing Post Interview:
"Bunker Hunt told me there was no contract
between us and that Lester ‘seems to have
something on you jockeys when you're in
England, but you'll be paid the same'. So I
agreed and Lester won on her.
"My wife Becky and I always got on very
well with Lester and Susan and had many
good times together with them and the Saint-
Martins. I'm glad to hear Lester is well and
would like to pass on my best wishes to them."
Life did not prove to be so glamorous in
retirement. He remained in France, where he
was assistant to Dahlia's trainer Maurice Zilber
for a time and continued riding work.
"I had always had difficulties with my
weight and it just became too much of a battle.
Unfortunately, other things went wrong at
around the same time and I had health and
financial problems,” said Pyers who returned to
Australia in 1991.
"At one time I was a millionaire, but I came
back and my accountant went through all
the money and I lost everything," he told the
Racing Post.

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course
and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes
(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a
short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)
took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money
of $1,879,285.
