Worthy Brothers, I am honored to be the District Deputy

for five of the finest Councils in the State of Maryland. Along with PGK Daniel Pot-repka PGK, our efforts will be directed to-ward fulfilling Worthy State Deputy Edgar D. Haynes's theme for this year, “Living Our Faith.” Our collective thanks must be extended to our former District Deputy Lawrence Grayson, PGK, PFN and former District Warden Sam Balboa, PGK for the excellent work they have performed over the past year.

I have had the opportunity to meet many of you over the past years and look forward to continuing this relationship throughout the year. As we work though this next year together, I ask you to re-member our Orders precepts: Catholic, family, fraternal, and service. With the precepts as a guide and your Council's usual outstanding efforts, I am certain that this District will continue to be recognized as one of the finest in the State.

Dan and I appreciate the efforts that

each Grand Knight, Council Officers, and Council members are now engaged in as you plan for your respective installations and develop your Council Calendars for the next Columbian year. A special note of thanks to each Grand Knight for provid-ing me with the information necessary to fill out the State Directory and other events and information necessary for State and District actions.

Although a Council's frenetic tempo does not stop throughout the year, I expect that a District composed of five confident and exceptional Councils will meet every challenge that arises during the next year.

God Bless America. Mary, Queen of the Knights, pray for us. Vivat Jesus, Tom Schneider PGK PFN District Deputy District 18

THE HANDY HANDS

FAMILIY ACTIVITIES By Neil Dorian, PGK

The Family of the Month selection for

June, 2006 is the Timm family. Brother Knight Ray Timm is wid-

owed, and has eight grown children. All were provided with Catholic educations. Ray is a member of the St. Jane Frances Parish where he is a Eucharistic Minister. He is a ministry volunteer at the Mariner Health Nursing Home in Bethesda. This included preparing a room and altar for weekly mass and communion service for about 20 residents. Ray has assisted the Ladies of Charity from St. Jane, including visits to the home-bound, bingo games, and distribution of Christmas gifts at the Homes’ residents. He has provided these weekly volunteer services to the sick and disabled nursing home residents for over two decades. He has established near fam-ily-like relationships with the long-term residents. Everyone loves him for his genuine concern for the personal, physical, and spiritual well-being of the residents and, in particular, they enjoy his telling of really ‘corny’ jokes at the end of each ser-

vice and for his singing multiple verses of “Oh, My Darling Clementine.”

A member of the Seniors Club for many years, he never had to be asked to perform any task. He always knew what had to be done, so he just volunteered and took on the responsibility.

Thanks you Ray for spending many hours with those less fortunate and bring a smile to their faces. Your tireless service is appreciated dearly by your brother Knights at the Rock Creek Council.

On June 6, the Ladies Auxiliary finished their Columbian Year activities with their annual dinner, held this year at the Pa-villion Restaurant on Pooks Hill Road. Many Knights joined their Ladies for a pleasant evening of good food and better con-versation among friends.

Outgoing president Betsy McIntyre was honored for her two years of leadership. The gavel was passed to Jennie Peternell Morris, who will now head the Ladies Auxiliary as well as serv-

ing as First Lady during the coming year. Membership in the Auxiliary is open to wives and other rela-

tives of Council members. Meetings are held monthly though attendance is not mandatory. Activities include adopting a needy family at Christmas, sponsoring a benefit card party each spring, and providing delicious treats for the annual Teachers' Apprecia-tion Awards ceremony, as well as supporting many council events.

All ladies are welcome to join us. Details to follow on fu-ture Chatter editions.

As mentioned earlier, on June 18, 2005, St. Jane de Chantal had its annual Corpus Christi Mass, procession and Benediction. I am sure that a number of parishes within the arms of Rock Creek Council had some form of celebration. St. Jane de Chantal had the benefit of four Color Corps members of Cardinal O’Boyle Assembly, headed by their Commander John Fox. There were an ad-ditional six knights of Rock Creek Council in participation along with the Color Corps.

I know that a number of our brother knights had responsibilities at other Masses and were not able to arrange to be at this particular one. We can only do what we can.

I am sure Msgr. Donald Essex was satisfied with our participation. Should other parishes have anything to report about their own events to be included in this monthly Church Report, please let me know so that it could be reported. Five of our parishes have coordinators that are in the position to supply me with any infor-mation that will be useful to report.

This August, Right to Life of Montgomery County will once again participate in the County Fair, by renting a spot (tent) to promote the meaning of life, from the womb, and throughout all its stages. There will be hand outs, pamphlets, and educa-tional materials to proliferate the concept of life, especially that of the unborn.

Four volunteers are needed, for four hours each (10 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 6 pm, and 6 pm to 10 pm), to cover the activities of this booth.

Should anyone of you wish to become involved by donating some time doing some Pro-Life work, please contact me, at 301-469-6099, and I’ll be happy to help to arrange how and when this may take place.

As I mentioned before, even though our Council may not officially be partici-pating in some activity with Pro-Life, we as individual members do so in many ways, and there are many more where you could help.

Please give me a call and let’s discuss it. God Bless.

CHURCH and PRO-LIFE ACTIVITIES REPORT By Peter D. Ferrigno, PGK

PGK Peter Ferrigno

On Friday, June 16, a Second Degree Ceremony was hosted by OLOVN (Our Lady of Viet Nam) Council and held at the Parish Church located on New Hamp-shire Ave., in Silver Spring. Since Dis-trict 11, to which OLOVN belongs, does not have a Second Degree team, District 18 volunteered the use of its team.

A total of 18 First Degree candidates participated including two members of Rock Creek Council. These members are Robert Vince and William Howland. Robert attends St. Jane Parish where he takes on the responsibility of ushering. William holds the position of Captain in the US Navy, and is a parishioner at the Church of the Little Flower. Following the degree, the host council provided a reception, and we all participated in friendly camaraderie.

Congratulations to Robert and Wil-liam for having successfully taken their Second Degree. We hope to see you at our Council meetings, and will welcome any suggestions and recommendations you may provide. Rock Creek Council looks forward to the day when you will advance to the rank of full knighthood, when you take your 3rd Degree.

NEWS FROM SUPREME $8 Million for The Catholic University of America Renovated Building to be Renamed in Honor of Father McGivney

The Knights of Columbus will provide an $8 million grant to The Catholic University of America (CUA) for the renovation of a prominent building on the university’s campus. The announcement was made April 28 by CUA president Father David M. O’Connell, C.M. during the annual American Cardinals Dinner in Washington.

The donation, which is the largest the Order has ever made to the university, will be used to renovate a 35,000-square-foot limestone building located on CUA’s cen-tral mall. Built in 1958, the modern-classical structure was the university’s original physics research facility.

Renovations are expected to last two years. Once completed, the building will be renamed McGivney Hall in honor of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. McGivney Hall will serve as the new home for the North American campus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, a graduate school of theology affiliated with the Pontifical Lateran Uni-versity in Rome as well as CUA.

“The Knights of Columbus enjoys a long and well-regarded relationship with Catholic University,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, who is a member of CUA’s board of trustees and the vice presi-dent of the John Paul II Institute. “In keep-ing with that relationship, as well as with the Order’s desire to support and promote Catholic higher education, I am pleased to make this grant on behalf of our 1.7 mil-lion Knights and their families, and I share Father O’Connell’s confidence that it will enhance the mission of CUA and the Pope John Paul II Institute for many years.”

sabbatical. So again, thanks to Jack I am able to face the coming year with some de-gree of confidence.

This past year the Council has spent very large sums of money obtaining the necessary permits to start our major im-provement program. Architects and engi-neers are now at work developing plans for the first stage of that program, a badly needed storage room. The expense in-volved will require that we must increase our efforts to rent the existing facility, and we need your help in this regard.

A major problem in this regard is that Brother Peter Ferrigno is stepping down as Rentals Manager after years of dedicated service, which has tryly been over and above what we could expect from even a paid employee. Peter will also be leaving the Presidency of the Kay-Cee Club, the owner of the Council’s property, and will

not seek to serve any longer as Director of the Club. The Council will sorely miss his presence as Rentals Manager, his over-sight of the Council’s property, and his work in directing the Council’s building plans through Montgomery County’s Zon-ing and Permit process. Fortunately, he will continue as a member of the Council and, knowing Peter, I am sure he will be receptive to our calls for help. we should all individually thank Peter for his outstanding per-formance over the years in support of our Council.

Another area of concern is our Death Notice System which has broken down. Under the direction of GK Cunningham a committee has been formed to review, es-tablish and publish a workable program. Members include Manuel Aragon, Arthur Hanley, John Bruce and myself. A report should be forthcoming in the near future.

Another problem is the fact that in to-day's world fraternal organizations are finding it difficult to attract new members. Although the Knights in general are con-tinuing to increase their overall member-ship, we at Rock Creek are experiencing this problem. At best people may be will-ing to join organizations, pay dues, receive magazine or bulletins, attend picnics and dinners, and go on trips but they are not

willing to attend meetings or perform any work associated with these activities or other organization goals.

GK Cunningham has therefore estab-lished a “Committee for the Future” to de-velop ideas and plans that will help assure that Rock Creek continues as a vibrant council, with an expanding membership. Committee members in addition to GK Cunningham and me include Joseph Auk-ward, Peter England, James Finn. Antonio Ibáñez, Albert Kiss, and James McCabe. Joseph Murphy has agreed to serve as Chairman pro-tem and Helen Fincutter, member of the Ladies Auxiliary, has gra-ciously agreed to input the interests and concerns of Council members’ wives, wid-ows and families. At present the Commit-tee is testing a questionnaire ascertaining members’ views and interests. We hope that members will not wait to be asked for their views, but will volunteer comments to any of the above listed Committee members. More will be heard from the Committee in the near future.

In closing I would like to remind one and all that our first social event of the new Columbian year after the Installation dinner will be the July 22 bus trip to At-lantic City New Jersey. The 1st Class, air-conditioned bus leaves at 7:45 am from Rock Creek Council and is scheduled to return at 8:45pm. The cost is $50 but you will receive a $17.00 rebate from the Hil-ton Hotel and then an additonal $8.00 to apply against your buffet lunch at the Hil-ton. Thanks to PGK Vince Bunag, it’s a deal that is hard to beat. Reservation dead-line is July 18, 2006. The trip is limited to persons 21 years and older. My wife Jennie, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and I will be there.

Won't you join us?

The Family of the Month selection for May is the George “Rocky” Ford fam-ily. Brother Knight Rocky is married to Elizabeth, and they have two children, namely Beth and Jennifer. They attend Lady of Victory Parish where they have worshiped together as a family over the years. Rocky is a past Grand Knight of the Rock Creek Council, and is a fourth degree member of the Cardinal Patrick O’Boyle Assembly. At the State Con-vention, Rocky, wife Liz, and daughter Jennifer set up and maintained the Council Hospitality Room at the Prin-cess Royale Hotel in Ocean City. This requires that they make the room reser-vation, buy and prepare the food, hors d’oeuvres, and refreshments, and set up the tables several times each day. The Ford Family has provided this service for at least the last 20 years. Attesting to the success of this endeavor is the large number of Knights, wives, and guests from the many Maryland Coun-cils who patronize the Rock Creek Hospitality Room each Convention weekend. Even though we compete with other hospitality rooms sponsored by Districts with several councils to

share the burden (cost and work load), the Rock Creek Hospitality Room is always “jammin” with visitors and camaraderie throughout the weekend.

Our Council thanks the Ford Family for its dedication and long hours spent in preparing and providing this successful annual event.

GOLDEN JUBILEE Sr. Lorean Whiteman, SNJM

Rock Creek Council offers special con-

gratulations to Sister Lorean Whiteman, SNJM, on the golden anniversary of her entry to the religious life. She has served at several schools in our council area and is known to many of our members.

Sister Lorean entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary 50 years ago, on July 2, 1956. She has an impressive list of accomplishments: foundress (one of four at St. Claire, Colonie, NY), adminis-trative assistant for the New York Province, musician, archivist, classroom teacher, and math tutor.

During her first assignment in Albany, Sister Lorean began to sense her true call-ing—to be available where and when she was needed, a feeling that has remained throughout her religious life. As she pro-gressed in her missions, Sister Lorean gained valuable knowledge and experience, but felt there was more she needed to do. Wanting to improve her teaching skills, especially in mathematics, she applied as a graduate degree candidate and teaching assistant at the State University of New York, Potsdam, where she earned a Masters in Mathematics Education. This led her to her present ministry of teaching pre-algebra and algebra, and private tutoring.

Sister Lorean feels that with her tutor-ing and teaching, she has come full circle in reaching out to others, particularly those who had never experienced success in mathematics. Her work has helped over 400 individuals with learning disabilities or difficulties in mathematics become success stories. More than just imparting skills, she has also instilled confidence and raised self-esteem.

Sister Lorean has taught in several schools in the Archdiocese of Washington, DC over a period of nineteen years. She shared her love, wisdom, and philosophy of learning with the children at Holy Cross, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Holy Redeemer in our area, and at St. Michael’s School and the Academy of the Holy Names in Silver Spring.

For this great service, we honor Sister Lorean and wish her congratulations on her golden anniversary.

WORKERS PARTY 2006

On Sunday, June 25, Grand Knight Jack Cunningham hosted his Workers Party, in which he thanked the hard work of many members throughout the past Columbian Year. The event, which was as usual free of charge, started with a nice display of food, complete with dessert and coffee, and, of course, an open bar.

Brother knights, their wives and a few children gathered on Cantrel Hall, and enjoyed a couple of hors of camaraderie, while comparing notes about the past year, and starting plans for the one ahead.

Several awards were distributed by GK Cunningham, among them the Knight of the Year, to DGK Bill Morris, and the Family of the Year to PGK Vince Bunag and his wife Glenda. PGK Neil Dorian used the opportunity to distribute 10 of the 12

Family of the Month Certificates he prepared, to those who happened to be in attendance. Chaplain Emeritus, Rev. Msgr. William O’Donnell said the final prayers and offered us his blessing, suggesting not only that we attended the up-coming Installa-tion of Officers, but that we invited other mem-bers to do so, since it is such an uplifting and meaningful ceremony.

We had over sixty (60) members and guests attend our “Summer Splash” meet-ing. Many thanks to our Treasurer Tom Locraft for all his work; also to Dottie Durkin and Maggie DeBet-tencourt for working the door; Darlene Coleman Ann Doby and Hilda Stofko for taking care of the mailing and to Charlie and Marge Swanke for doing the ta-ble decorations and for coordinating the clean-up afterwards.

The Chesapeake Catering Co. did an-other great job for us!

Our Annual Indoor Picnic will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006. Flyers will be sent to all who did NOT attend our Summer Splash event. The Picnic requires more work than any other function we put on, so if you can help, please call me. We will especially need extra cooks!

In August we will hold a Lunch-eon/Meeting at Alfio’s. Our V.P. Jim Young will chair this function. Watch for the flyer.

We celebrated the birthdays of Emilia Aragón, Gloria Bateman and Norb Wittrock (94!). Also, congratulations to George Cruz and Chester Chen who are now Perma-nent Deacons for the Archdiocese at St. Jane’s and St. Bart’s.

A farewell to Fr. Michael Schneider on his return to Montana. He was a fun person to have around!

There will be a trip to David Taylor Model Facility. Information for this trip will hopefully be in our Alfio’s flyer.

This is the last call for dues. Anyone who has not paid dues will not receive future flyers. Send your $10.00 per person to Tom Locraft.

Please remember to support our Council functions and to invite your clergy to our functions. GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND OUR MILITARY!

Please call me (301-493-8883) for additions or deletions to this list.

NEW FRATERNAL YEAR A new fraternal year is upon us. Con-

gratulations to the newly elected and ap-pointed council leaders. I’m sure you have a list of things that you want to accomplish during the coming year. I’m eager to help.

One of these goals is likely the attain-ment of the Star Council award - the most prestigious award the Order offers at the council level. I’m certainly committed to helping on the insurance side, but I’ll be glad to help on the membership side as well.

If you know an eligible Catholic man who might be interested in joining the Order (and who among us doesn’t), he’s probably just waiting to be asked. I can help you, either by approaching him myself, or by “coaching” you – transferring sales skills that you can use to recruit him and other prospects. As always, I’m at your service.

What would be helpful to all of us would be an early start on those goals, rather than waiting until May or June. Let’s get an early start on award season this year.
