Dear Friends,
Happy New Year and welcome to 2013 as the Rochester PhilharmonicOrchestra’s 90th season continues!
We start the year with two evenings of sizzling jazz by the incomparable trumpeter Chris Bottion January 11 and 12. Two weekends later, we celebrate the 257th birthday of WolfgangAmadè Mozart, and Principal Trombone Mark Kellogg moves to the front of the stage for Lars-Erik Larsson’s Concertino for Trombone. Mark is one of several RPO musicians featured in soloroles this season. The RPO also will play the Mozart & More program at Smith Opera House inGeneva, one of three concerts there this season.
In February, we continue our always-rewarding creative partnership with Rochester City Ballet. They will be returning to the Kodak Hall stage with the world premiere of Jamey Leverett’schoreography to the colorful, evocative music of Jeff Tyzik’s New York Cityscape.
February also is a busy time for our education programs. On February 3rd at Hochstein, rhythm and percussion will be the themes at our Sunday afternoon orKIDStra concert featuringbeatboxer Shodekeh and percussion students from Hochstein School of Music. Later in themonth, thousands of students will be arriving by bus from around the region to enjoy one offour hour-long concerts designed to connect orchestral music to classroom curriculum.Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach Michael Butterman will lead the RPO inworks by Grieg, Bernstein, and Berlioz for the Symphonic Stories Intermediate Concerts.
We are especially grateful to County Executive Maggie Brooks and the Monroe CountyLegislature, and to the Cornell/Weinstein Family Foundation, for their longstanding support ofthese wonderful concerts—just one component of the RPO’s continued commitment toprovide children with a live symphonic music experience.
All of us in the RPO family look forward to seeing you often in the coming year. Enjoy theconcert!

Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers has been feeding tummies and mindssince 1969. Founder Dave Thomas knew at the age of eight that he wantedto own the “best restaurant in the world.” Thomas never felt more like part
of a loving family than when he and his adoptive father, Rex, went out to eat together. Heenvisioned Wendy’s as a place where families could share a good meal and spend quality timetogether, and hoped to use his success to give back to the community.
Wendy’s Restaurants of Rochester Owner Richard Fox carries on Thomas’ dedication tocommunity service through several of his own initiatives. Programs include Wendy’s Succeed toRead, Birthday Club, Product Donations, Incentives and Awards, Wendy’s Bus Program, andWendy’s Fundraising. Wendy’s Restaurants of Rochester has been the presenting sponsor for theRPO orKIDStra series since 1980. The RPO thanks Wendy’s Restaurants of Rochester for itscontinued support of the orchestra’s education and community outreach programming.

This is the first performance by the RPO.
Pulitzer-prize winner Jennifer Higdon is oneof the most performed living Americancomposers. Her list of commissioners rangefrom The Cleveland Orchestra to thePhiladelphia Orchestra; from eighth blackbirdto the Tokyo String Quartet; and from thePresident’s Own Marine Band to such artistsas Hilary Hahn. She received the 2010Pulitzer Prize in Music for her Violin Concerto, with the committee citing it as a “deeplyengaging piece that combines flowing lyricismwith dazzling virtuosity.” In 2010, she receiveda Grammy for Best Contemporary ClassicalComposition for her Percussion Concerto. She holds the Rock Chair in Composition atthe Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Jennifer Higdon writes, “I wrote Machine asan encore tribute to composers like Mozartand Tchaikovsky, who seemed to be able towrite so many notes and so much music thatit seems like they were machines! This workwas commissioned in 2003 by the NationalSymphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C.,Leonard Slatkin, Music Director, through agrant from the John and June HechingerCommissioning Fund for New OrchestraWorks. The premiere was given by theNational Symphony Orchestra, GiancarloGuerrero, conducting.”
———————————————Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21Ludwig van Beethovenb. Bonn, Germany / December 15, 1770d. Vienna, Austria / March 26, 1827__________________________________
First performed on March 7, 1935; Guy FraserHarrison, conductor. Last performed May 2,1992; Mark Elder, conductor.
Beethoven’s major innovations lay ahead ofhim when he composed his first symphony. He clearly did not intend it as a major orindividual statement, but to display anunderstanding of the current style, the onedeveloped so fruitfully by Haydn and Mozart. It fulfills these modest ambitions perfectly. The premiere took place in Vienna on April2, 1800.
The magnificent symphonic journey thatwould conclude with the Ode to Joy beginswith a brief, questioning introduction in slowtempo. The ensuing Allegro is bright, sunny, and athletic. What follows is not at all thesoulful, dreamy slow movement of theRomantic era, but a relaxing interlude set at abrisk, ambling pace. It provides contrast withthe energy of the opening movement, as wellas warmth without sentimentality.
Beethoven calls the next section a minuet, butit lies much closer to the scherzo/village dancetype of third movement, in which he wouldlater specialize, than it does to the courtlysteps of the ballroom. The central trio offersonly the slightest degree of contrastingrestraint. The exceptionally brief introductionto the finale presents little more than a call toattention, followed by a rhythmic tease. Thenit’s off to the races for the joyous romp thatbrings the symphony home.

This is the first performance by the RPO.
Larsson’s busy career saw him workingsuccessfully not only as a composer, but alsoas a conductor, teacher, music critic, operacoach, and radio producer. He began hiseducation in Sweden and continued it inVienna with Alban Berg. He first won

international attention in 1934, when hisSinfonietta for Strings was performed at afestival sponsored by the International Societyfor Contemporary Music. During the earlyyears of his composing career, he adopted avariety of styles, from folksy, lyrical neo-romanticism to atonality, before settling onan elegant neo-classicism for the majority ofhis later works. His compositions includesymphonies, concertos, choral, chamber, andsolo works, as well as incidental music forradio plays and films.
Between 1953 and 1957, while Larsson wasserving as the inspector of Sweden’s state-supported amateur orchestras, he composed12 concertinos (short concertos) for soloinstruments and string orchestra. He designedthese generally light-hearted works for skilledamateur performers as well as professionals.Soloists everywhere are extremely grateful forthem, since the concerto repertoire for suchinstruments as oboe, bassoon, trumpet, andtrombone is quite limited.
As with all the Larsson concertinos, the onefor trombone (1955) has three compactmovements. The form of the first, Prelude, resembles a dramatic monologue for thesoloist, with minimal orchestralaccompaniment. The second movement,Aria, allows the soloist to show off theinstrument’s ability to sing long, smooth,quasi-vocal lines. The Finale calls for plentifulenergy, agility, and a sense of fun.
———————————————Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartb. Salzburg, Austria / January 27, 1756d. Vienna, Austria / December 5, 1791__________________________________
First performed on January 12, 1933; EugeneGoossens, conductor. Last performed May 3,2003; Christopher Seaman, conductor.
Mozart could not have known that the threesymphonies he composed between June 26
and August 10, 1788 would be his last. Theyare quite different from each other:Symphony No. 39 is one of his most elegantcreations, its successor among his mostpathetic. And appropriately, No. 41 is thegrandest and most joyous of all hissymphonies. Uncertainty surrounds theirbeing performed during Mozart’s lifetime.Circumstantial evidence points to one ormore of them being programmed on severaloccasions, such as a subscription concert atthe Vienna Casino later in 1788, or duringthe concert tours that took him to Germanyin 1788 and 1789.
In the opening movement of Symphony No.40, an overriding mood of resignationundercuts the music’s plentiful energy. Thesecond theme resembles nothing so much asa series of sighs. The symphony’s sole oasis ofrepose arrives in the placid second movement. The ensuing minuet lies as far from theballroom as may be imagined. Its almostmenacing outer panels make it perhaps themost disturbing example of its kind. Thecentral trio section offers the barest glimpse ofhappier times. The forward drive of the firstmovement returns in the finale, with a moreinsistent edge added. Considerable momen -tum is generated, but the atmosphere ofgloomy defiance persists to the very last bar.

Truckers fear load from tollsState Thruway Authority wants to boost revenues with a 45 percent hike
By VELVET SPICER
The state Thruway Authority’s plan to
raise tolls on commercial vehicles could
cost Rochester-area businesses—and ul-
timately consumers—millions of dollars.
“We’ve heard from smaller carriers it
could be a $10,000 to $20,000 increase
on an annual basis,” said Kendra Adams,
president of the New York State Motor
Truck Association. “Some larger carri-
ers are looking at a half-a-million-dollar
increase annually.”
Those in the industry say such an increase
could make New York the most expensive
state in the nation for trucking. Currently it
is ranked second most expensive.
An assessment by independent traffi c
engineer Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.
prompted Thruway Authority executive di-
rector Thomas Madison Jr. to ask
the Thruway board in May for a
“modest” 45 percent toll increase
on commercial traffi c. Jacobs had
estimated that traffi c and revenue
growth soon would become insuf-
fi cient for the Thruway Authority
to maintain fi scal balance and debt
service coverage ratios.
Madison did not return calls for
comment, but in his May letter
to the board he wrote that “with-
out taking action to adjust toll rates and
streamline operations, the Authority’s
debt service coverage ratio is projected
