Needs AssessmentHernia surgery is one of the most common general surgery procedures performed in the United States. There are multiple different methods for repairing both inguinal and ventral hernias, including open and minimally invasive techniques. Interest in the robotics for a variety of general surgery procedures, including hernia surgery, has become widespread. Therefore in order for general surgeons, fellow, and residents to continue to provide high quality care, there is a need to evolve with advancing technologies. Therefore, the goal of the course is to educate participants on the most current advances in surgical techniques for hernia repair, focusing on minimally invasive and robotic techniques through didactic lectures, panel discussions, live case demonstration, opportunity for a hands-on lab, and interactive audience participation.

Course OverviewThis course is designed for general surgeons, residents & students interested in incorporating robotics into their practice, specifically in an academic setting. The course will review the latest updates in robotic & minimally invasive surgery procedures.

ObjectivesCompletion of this course will enable participants to:• Understand how robotics can be incorporated into an academic practice• Identify different methods of incorporating trainees into a robotics practice• Describe inguinal anatomy and the various methods of inguinal hernia repair• Discuss the various techniques for minimally invasive hernia repairs• Understanding port placement and patient positioning for minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair• Identifying and describing robotic technique of inguinal hernia repair and different mesh options for these repairs • Describe challenges of ventral hernia repairs• Identify and describe various techniques, including open and minimally invasive, for ventral hernia repair• Understand the various techniques for mesh placement in minimally invasive ventral hernia repair• Understanding the port placement, patient positioning, and docking for robotic ventral hernia repair• Understanding complex abdominal wall reconstruction via minimally invasive technique for large abdominal wall hernias
