Festiv ‘ull - Hull

Post Graduate Diploma - Year 2 The-sis: Using arts the project aims to revi-talise locally through addressing some of the city’s underlying social issues whilst becoming its headquarters of fes-tival. Located within the new ‘creative industries quarter’ of Hull, the proposal sits within an abandoned dry dock at the point in which the Humber Estuary and River Hull meet. It takes infl uence from the dock cranes and culture once appar-ent on the site, using its unique location to heat and cool the building. Recycled shipping crates also aim to create a con-nection with the city’s import/ export economy. The design has a focus on how through communication technology, the public realm can be made more socially sustainable.

The Moving Image - LeedsPost Graduate Diploma - Year 2 Design Dissertation: The project focuses on the defi ning and redefi ning of Leeds’s main street, Briggate. This was followed by a design pro-posal

Defi ne - A performance spaceThroughout the day Briggate acts as a performance space, from the buskers, the street sellers and charity workers to the shoppers parading the latest fashions. However as the sun goes down it is as though the curtains close and the streets vibrant atmosphere disappears for another day.

Re-Defi ne - A destination, the main stageBriggate has always been at the heart of Leeds; however it fails to meet up to other leading city centre spaces. With the current economic climate looming, a retail dominated street cannot survive. Historically the street thrived as a cultural centre lined with cinemas, theatres and inns. Today it is still an informal performance space, however it lacks defi nition. It should build on its history to once again become a cultural and entertainment destination for performers.

Propose - Leeds International Film Festival HeadquartersUsing technology we are able to communicate and interact globally from our homes. Our public spaces have not yet embraced communication technologies in the same way.The proposal focuses on the interaction between small groups of people and technology within the public realm. It investigates how we can become ‘prosumers’ (producers and consumers) of information and how this can lead to a more socially sustainable space. The project has taken the form of a temporary headquarters for the Leeds International Film Festival.

Artisan Quarter - York

Post Graduate Diploma - Year 1: Historically the site housed medieval craft warehouses and shops. The proposal takes this idea to address issues of sustainable living through creating a contemporary artisan quarter containing live-work units, key worker accommodation and community facilities. The Project won the 2008 - Design Group 3 Prize for Best Contemporary Design in a Historical Setting

Leeds Met Learning Centre - LeedsPost Graduate Diploma - Year 1: The project is located within the University Quarter of Leeds. Currently the area is student dominated and largely disjointed, acting as a barrier between city’s suburbs and the city centre due to the sunken ring road and large building masses. The proposal looks to address these issues introducing an urban park, a campus of uni-versity buildings around a public square and affordable residential accommodation to further en-courage diversity. Following the masterplan the project took focus on creating a new learning centre for Leeds Metropolitan University encouraging social interaction, visual links and in-formal meeting, while environ-mental sustainability was at its forefront.

36 The Calls - LeedsGarnett Neth-erwood Archi-tects: 36 The Calls, Leeds - Design Com-petition for a new, sustainable, iconic building for Leeds City Centre. Noticing the curious re-semblance of the site to St Marks Square, Venice, the proposal aims to retain the existing riverside public space, while introduc-ing an iconic sculpture of one of Leeds’s most famous sons. Accommodation below ground level will house a centre dedicated to the works of internationally renowned, Leeds born Alan Ben-nett. The design entry received a special mention in the Architects Journal.

Granary Wharf - Leeds

Garnett Netherwood Architects: Granary Wharf, Leeds £18million - Located within the historic Holbeck area of Leeds, the project has focused on a number of different uses throughout its develop-ment, including residential, hotel, offi ce and retail. The project recieved outline planning permission in 2008 and is now being progressed entirely as high quality offi ce space. The design responds to a number of planning restrictions, while maintaining key views of the listed Italian Towers adjacent to the site. The area additonally has a requirement for a number of sustainable targets. The scheme aims to achieve an excellent breeam rating.

Piccadilly gardens - ManchesterGarnett Nether-wood Architects: Piccadilly, Travel Lodge, Manches-ter £8million - The project consists of the refurbishment, conversion and re-modelling of the roof of a Grade II listed Edwardian building. At ground and basement level will be high spec retail units, with a hotel at upper fl oors, enclosing a central courtyard. The project has recently recieved planning permis-sion and is soon to go out to tender.

Queen Street - LeedsGarnett Netherwood Architects: York Place, Leeds £10million - New build High Spec offi ces located in the Leeds central conservation area. The design aims to respond to the two differ-ent charactered streets which adjoin it whilst stepping back at upper levels from the street to address rights of light issues. Along York Place the building has been broken down into a series of brick bays, creating rythm and refl ecting the georgian terraces opposite. To Queen Street the building is of larger proportion relating to its context. The project has recently received planning per-mission.

Symphony - Barnsley

Garnett Netherwood Architects: Symphony, Barnsley £18million - 500,000sqft Industrial Warehouse Project Garnett Netherwood were appointed as the build architects on a de-sign and build contract to complete Phase 1 of the project. Phase 1 consisted of the main warehouse unit, its dock levellers, high speed vehicle access doors, amenity pods, offi ce space, canteen, reception, secutiry booths and the surrounding landscaping, road and car park-ing layouts.
